Charts – 17 August 2014

Posted on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 by Paul in Music

This would have been a pretty dead chart, were it not for a couple of future hits poking their heads into the bottom of the top 40.  But hey!  Something manages to spend a second week at number one!

40.  Sam Smith – “I’m Not The Only One”

The follow-up to the number 1s “Money on my Mind” and “Stay With Me”, which is still at 13.  This is going to be the fourth single from Smith’s album “In the Lonely Hour” (the other one was “Lay Me Down”, a small-scale promotional release that missed the top 40).  The official release of the single bundle isn’t until the end of the month, but it’s being downloaded an album track already.  An interesting choice of single, playing Smith up as a soul balladeer.

38.  The Saturdays – “What Are You Waiting For”

This is the token new track on the Saturdays’ greatest hits album, which enters the album chart at 10 this week.  So it’s not a case of early downloads of a future single – this is apparently as good as it gets for “What Are You Waiting For”.  And that’s surprising.  Okay, it’s hardly their finest hour, but they’ve been around since 2008, and their previous low was 22 (for “Work” in 2009).  The Saturdays have had 13 top 10 hits.

32.  Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora – “Black Widow”

Another upcoming single.  I seriously question the wisdom of this choice, though.  This is co-written by Katy Perry – but that’s because it was bounced from her last album.  And it’s pretty obvious why she bounced it – because it’s far too similar to “Dark Horse” to appear on the same track listing.  Besides, should Iggy Azalea really be gunning for pop radio airplay quite this blatantly?

14.  Rizzle Kicks – “Tell Her”

This track first turned up as an Evian advert released to tie in with Wimbledon.  I suspect they’ve just banged it out as a single on the grounds that it exists now, so why not?  Actually, I’m not entirely sure why they’ve bothered making a second video for it, since the original advert was basically a full length video to start with.

11.  Ed Sheeran – “Don’t”

Up 12 to be highest climber for the second week running.

4.  Kiesza – “Giant in my Heart”

The follow-up to the April number 1 “Hideaway” – so Kiesza escapes the one hit wonder list in early course.  Her real name is Kiesa Ellestad; the unhelpfully-spelt recording name is apparently pronounced “Kaiser”.  At one point she was calling herself Kiesza Szosi, apparently in reference to The Usual Suspects.  She’s written for people like Rihanna, but it’s taken her a while to settle on a formula for her own releases – her 2012 single “Oops” is a perkily grating electropop song which she has since disavowed as a joke.  The 90s club diva routine seems to be working out a lot better for her.

1.  Nico & Vinz – “Am I Wrong”

A second week!  It won’t manage a third, but it’s still only the fourth record of the year to spend two consecutive weeks at the top.

On the album chart:

  • “X” by Ed Sheeran spends its eighth week at number 1.  Three of its tracks are still in the top 40.
  • “Get Hurt” by The Gaslight Anthem at 4.  New Jersey guitar band.  Modern AOR basically.  It’s their fifth studio album, and the third to make the UK album chart.  The last one, “Handwritten”, got to 2.  Title track video.
  • “At The Movies” by Richard & Adam at 5.  The House of Cowell brings us a third album of knocked-out cod-classical covers from the duo who came third in Britain’s Got Talent two years ago, aimed squarely at the unadventurous listener.  It’s a return to the top 10 after “The Christmas Album” stalled at 24, so I imagine they’ll be happy.  No actual music videos on their YouTube channel, but here’s the advert.
  • “Finest Selection – The Greatest Hits” by the Saturdays at 10.  Which is pretty typical for a Saturdays studio album, oddly.
  • “Lp1” by FKA twigs at 16.  Tahlilah Barnett used to be a dancer (she’s in a Jessie J video, apparently) before veering off to become an alt-R&B act in her own right.  She used to be called just Twigs until another Twigs complained; the FKA stands for Formerly Known As.  Single (which is really good, actually): “Two Weeks”.
  • “I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss” by Sinead O’Connor at 22.  That’s her highest placing album since “Universal Mother” in 1994 – as I regularly note, veteran acts tend to see their album sales hold up rather better in the changing market.  Single (also quite good): “Take Me To Church”.
  • “Yorktown Heights” by Grant Nicholas at 29.  Solo debut by the lead singer of Feeder.  Single: “Time Stood Still”.
  • “This and That” by Loveable Rogues at 37.  These guys are Britain’s Got Talent alumni who were signed by Syco and dropped after one single (“What A Night”, which made number 9 last year).  Hence this indie album.  Their post-Cowell singles are distinctly less punchable than “What A Night”, which is a pretty obvious clue of how that relationship went awry.  Their Wikipedia page includes such sentences as “The boys finished their first ever headline tour ‘The Talking Monkeys Tour’ in March 2014 travelling across the UK to perform at different venues for their amazing fans.”  You know, in case you were unsure of what a tour was.   Single: “Love Sick”.

That Sinead O’Connor single is dire, and the self-referential video doesn’t help.
