Charts – 20 July 2018

Posted on Sunday, July 22, 2018 by Paul in Music

You will not be surprised to hear that “Three Lions” is no longer number one.

1.  Drake – “In My Feelings”

Drake’s third number one of the year (after “Nice for What” and “God’s Plan”) and his fourth in total.  It’s broken from the album pack, presumably because it’s being used in viral dance videos – those don’t count towards the chart, even under the new rules, because only the official video counts.  Still, it’s giving the track a bit more attention.  The other two Drake tracks on this week’s chart are “Don’t Matter To Me” at 5, and “Nonstop” at 15.  “Scorpion” naturally gets a third week at number one on the album chart.

As for “Three Lions”, which reached the top just as the England team was knocked out of the World Cup, it breaks the record for the biggest ever drop from number 1.  That wasn’t entirely a foregone conclusion, since the previous record holder, the Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir, plunged to number 29 immediately after their week as Christmas number one in 2015.  That’s an impressive benchmark, but one that “Three Lions” surpasses with ease, plummeting all the way to number 97.  The record for the largest drop in a single week is 108 places, set in January 2012 by YouTube vlogger Alex Day with his chart campaign single “Forever Yours”; since the chart company no longer publishes the positions below 100, it’s currently impossible for that record to be beaten.

4.  Ariana Grande – “God is a Woman”

Her second top ten hit of the year, following “No Tears Left To Cry”, which reached number 2.  It’s one of those odd records where the promotion is kind of assuming that nobody pays that much attention to the words, since the title and video are going for feminist anthem in a big way, while  the actual lyric is about the sexual prowess of Ariana Grande (“You’ll believe God is a woman”).  The video is wonderfully ridiculous, piling on the reference points and chucking in some screaming gophers for the hell of it.

30.  Childish Gambino – “Summertime Magic”

The follow-up to “This is America”, giving Childish Gambino his second top 40 hit.  I don’t see this having the same impact, though.

34.  Martin Garrix featuring Khalid – “Ocean”

Martin Garrix leaves dance music aside altogether, in favour of producing a pleasant enough EDM pop song for Khalid, who makes his third chart appearance of the year.

This week’s climbers…

  • “Rise” by Jonas Blue featuring Jack & Jack climbs 7-6.
  • “Girls Like You” by Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B climbs 8-7.
  • “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds of Summer climbs 11-8, in its seventh week on the top 40, returning them to the top 10 for the first time since “Amnesia” in 2014.  This is really odd to see from a band who, until now, have been a classic example of a purely-fanbase act.
  • “Jackie Chan” by Tiesto & Dzeko featuring Preme & Post Malone climbs 12-9.
  • “Taste” by Tyga featuring Offset climbs 24-16.
  • “Lucid Dreams” by Juice WRLD climbs 19-17.
  • “Only You” by Cheat Codes & Little Mix climbs 28-19, perhaps because the promotion has stepped up a gear; there’s a video now.
  • “Ring Ring” by Jax Jones & Mabel featuring Rich the Kid climbs 29-23.
  • “Oh My” by Dappy featuring Ay Em climbs 26-25.  This keeps crawling up, eight weeks into its chart run.
  • “Nevermind” by Denis Lloyd climbs 32-29.

On the album chart, “Scorpion” is number one, as mentioned already…

2.  The Vamps – “Night and Day”

Bit of an oddity, this.  Technically, this is a re-entry of the album which spent a week at number one in July 2017 (before plummetting to number 35 the next week).  That was already after the point where the Vamps stopped having hit singles, but their period as a boy band gave them enough of a following to shift an album to number one for a week.  “Night and Day” was always supposed to be some sort of concept album, with an initial “Night” album to be followed in due course with a second “Day” album.  This is that second album, three years later, but it’s been packaged as a double album with the first disc, so the chart is treating it as a special edition, and thus a re-entry rather than a new entry.

4.  Motion Picture Cast Recording – “Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again”

More film cast karaoke from the belated jukebox musical sequel.  I’m not quite sure why they’ve opted for “When I Kissed The Teacher” as a promotional single on YouTube, since although the Abba version does have a video, it wasn’t a single – it’s a track from their 1978 album “Arrival”, the one with “Dancing Queen” on it.

6.  Rick Astley – “Beautiful Life”

Rick Astley’s fifth top ten album – not as surprising as you might think, since his previous album “50” got to number 1, impressively leveraging the meme to kick start his actual career.

12.  Hunna – “Dare”

They’re an English rock band, and their previous album reached number 13 two years ago.  So slow progress since then.

16.  Not3s – “Take Not3s II”

The sequel to, obviously, “Take Not3s”, which reached number 43 last year.  So this is a big step up, reflecting the fact that he’s become a regular guest in the singles chart – though the track above could still only get to number 60.

21.  Bury Tomorrow – “Black Flame”

Metalcore band, who are sadly not from Bury.  It’s their third album to chart and the highest placing so far.

Which part of this is wrong?

Don’t blame Paul. I just read the Wikipedia entry on that “Night And Day” album and its various editions are confusing beyond words.
