House to Astonish Episode 174

Posted on Saturday, May 11, 2019 by Al in Podcast

Lots to discuss this time round, as we talk about the deaths of Kazuhiko Kato aka Monkey Punch and Kazuo Koike, the Lion Forge/Oni Press merger, Dark Horse’s Netflix first look deal, Bill Jemas and Axel Alonso’s new publishing company and Marvel Comics 1000. We’ve also got reviews of Excellence and New Agents of Atlas and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe is a mean green mother from outer space. All this plus the maximum number of wild animals that can safely live in a blacksmith’s, the George’s Marvellous Medicine of comics, and Magic Ian the Magician.

  1. Zachary Adams says:

Given that there was an eight month gap between the end of the main Hickman Avengers run and the start of Time Runs Out, and then an eight month gap after Secret Wars, the clear answer is to make 2015 share a page with either 14 or 16.

  2. Mark coale says:

Hopefully, 1954 or 1955 is a page of Commie Smasher Captain Anerica fighting the Soviet Red Skull.

  3. Damien Whiter says:

Our periodic reminder that if you are asthmatic or elderly make sure you get your pneumococcal vaccination.

  4. Voord 99 says:

I’m not sure that I agree with our hosts that “Sorcerer’s apprentice who’s also a lime-green minotaur” really needs anything extra.

  5. Bengt Strand says:

In the game Luna Snow has two looks, the default one where she looks more like a performer. https://future-fight.fandom.com/wiki/Luna_Snow#Modern

And a premium currency look that was added later (click on Andromeda Suit in the linked page) that I guess they used in the comic if she kind of looks like Quake.

  6. Ben says:

Agents of Atlas makes a lot more sense now that I know all these very generic new characters are from a video game.

  7. Mark coale says:

When I heard K Pop star, I was imagining something like the New Media character from the American Gods TV show: cat ears, glitter, anime outfit, …

  8. Dave White says:

Hey, if Xemnu the Living Titan can be a successful children’s show host then Rintrah is a shoo-in.

  9. Luis Dantas' says:

With Jemas and Axel Alonso together, this new publisher will be very commercial indeed, perhaps even more than current Marvel.

    I am not thrilled.

  10. Will Cooling says:

Al confuses Peter Milligan with Pat Mills on the beef with Rebellion

  11. Mark coale says:

Too bad the Hickman PR came out the week after the pod and not before.
