House to Astonish Presents: The Lightning Round Episode 30

Posted on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 by Al in Podcast

Back once again with the renegade Masters of Evil, as we look at the first half of 2004 miniseries Avengers/Thunderbolts. There’s talk of Spider-Man working down the mines, Jean Grey’s ex-boyfriends and a deranged neo-Nazi who names everything after the letter X, and even some discussion of the Avengers and the Thunderbolts, so why not come and join us? Exactly, no reason, that’s what we thought.

The episode is here, or available via the embedded player below. Let us know what you think, in the comments, on Bluesky, or via email.

  1. Skippy says:

There’ll be plenty of equal opportunity nudity when you get into New Thunderbolts.

I think of Cap’s approach in this series as being his default mode as Avengers leader, but maybe that’s recency bias.

  2. Thomas Deja says:

I used to have this theory that Jarvis had a very, very Bronx accent but put on a posh accent because that’s what his clients expected him…so to me, a Jarvis-as-Jason Statham makes total sense

  3. Woodswalked says:

“Imagine if you had this kind of neo-Nazi idiot who calls everything he touched ‘X’.”

    Yeah… ‘imagine’ …sigh.

I am going to feel very powerful the next time that I consume ice cream. LOL!!

  4. Matthew Murray says:

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think that saying “energy flux reads nominal” is awkwardly worded, but more or less fine as it can be taken to mean “an insignificant amount.”

Also, I don’t know if this appeared in the previous arc, but there are a few times in this where Karla’s eyes are coloured white with shadows in them which looks almost like they’ve been cut out of the paper, which I found kind of creepy. Though I can’t say I’m a fan of her (new?) costume in general.

  5. Mika says:

Big wing-headed twat is such a great insult, thanks Al.

  6. Mark coale says:

I can believe Zemo was nehind ruining Twitter.
