So: pretty much all you need to know about 2024 in popular music is that Chappell Roan, Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter had a breakthrough year. And maybe, on a lesser scale&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Gracie Abrams &#8211; &#8220;That&#8217;s So True&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7djQsPAGIxc?si=5QPzY3r07UCSnO7A\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the single from the deluxe edition of her album &#8220;The Secret of Us&#8221;. It entered at 19 two weeks ago, vaulted to number 3 last week, and now reaches number 1. By the way, it\u00a0<em>is<\/em> an unquestioned number one, as it would have beaten Sabrina Carpenter even if she wasn&#8217;t subject to the downweighting rule. I&#8217;m surprised that &#8216;That&#8217;s So True&#8221; has jumped to number 1 this quickly, given that her previous single &#8220;I Love You I&#8217;m Sorry&#8221; &#8211; her first major hit &#8211; is still at its peak of number 4, and took nine weeks to get there. It&#8217;s a decent enough track, if very much school-of-Taylor-Swift, and I guess it&#8217;s nice to see something finally making speedy progress to the top in a chart that&#8217;s been extremely slow this year.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of which&#8230; there are only two new entries on this week&#8217;s chart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23. The Weeknd &amp; Anitta &#8211; &#8220;Sao Paolo&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2kjolTLZ_Mg?si=l4P9ddSqWOnIxu1u\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The third single from the upcoming album, and this is certainly more of a departure from the formula. The video is&#8230; um, well, yes, it&#8217;s an image. Anitta is a big name in Brazil, but this is her first appearance on the UK charts.<\/p>\n<p>The lead single from the album, &#8220;Dancing in the Flames&#8221; entered at 12 and only lasted three weeks. &#8220;Timeline&#8221; entered at 7 and has done better: it&#8217;s currently at 21 in its sixth week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. Tyler, The Creator &#8211; &#8220;Like Him&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dgUHE8wWhiE?si=7p0pHRwFxgEfwYkP\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Finally, another album track from &#8220;Chromakopia&#8221;, taking his third spot. &#8220;St Chroma&#8221; falls 15-16 this week, and &#8220;Darling I&#8221; falls 24-27. Oddly, the track that gets shunted out is &#8220;Noid&#8221;, the one that has a video and is being promoted as a single &#8211; it was number 16 last week but seems to have fallen off sharply.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a re-entry at number 40 for &#8220;Stick Season&#8221;, which will not die. So&#8230; this week&#8217;s climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Door&#8221; by Teddy Swims<\/strong> climbs 12-8 to become his second top 10 hit in its 24th week on the top 40, and it&#8217;s not even the current single. That&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Bad Dreams&#8221;<\/strong>, which climbs 25-15 this week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Wildflower&#8221; by Billie Eilish<\/strong> climbs 18-11.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The three tracks leaving the top 40 (thanks to a re-entry for &#8220;Stick Season&#8221; at 40) are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Noid&#8221; by Tyler, The Creator<\/strong> after a single week at 16.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Feelslikeimfallinginlove&#8221; by Coldplay\u00a0<\/strong>peaked at 16 and lasted 19 weeks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Pink Pony Club&#8221; by Chappell Roan<\/strong> peaked at 13 and lasted 7 weeks. I&#8217;m not quite sure what&#8217;s happened with this one, since it seems to have dropped straight out of the top 100 despite not being on the chart long enough to qualify for the downweighting rule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the album chart, there&#8217;s just a single new entry:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. The Cure &#8211; &#8220;Songs of a Lost World&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/85PeF_yBlt4?si=TcB1SWUvXJwUnDIg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This has more chart points than the rest of the top 5 combined, but it&#8217;s\u00a0<em>very<\/em> heavy skewed towards physical sales &#8211; only around 5% of its chart points come from streaming, which suggests it won&#8217;t be around long.
