Lewis Capaldi &#8211; \u201cSurvive\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6fJI7xydShM?si=xPMQ_IzlOfJ9JDMH\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another new number 1! We last heard from Lewis Capaldi in January 2024, when \u201cStrangers\u201d reached number 37. But that was a single that he barely promoted, having withdrawn from live shows on mental health grounds after summer 2023, when he had an episode of Tourette\u2019s syndrome during his set at the Glastonbury Festival. He promoted <em>this<\/em> single with a surprise set at the 2025 Festival. That clearly made a big difference, since he released a covers EP last month that seems to have gone mostly unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On paper, it has a comfortable lead over the number 2 single &#8211; \u201cDior\u201d by MK featuring Chrystal &#8211; but there\u2019s a big asterisk there. More than a third of its points &#8211; and over 98% of its lead &#8211; comes from the collectible CDs that were offered for pre-order on its website. They were\u00a0<em>meant<\/em> to be shipping next week, but that got rushed forward to this week, so that they\u2019d count towards this week\u2019s chart. As it turns out, he would\u00a0<em>just<\/em> have made it to number one anyway, but it would have been a lead of 1%. Anyway, the physical sales are a one-week wonder, so he\u2019ll have a fight on his hands to manage a second week. It\u2019s possible, but it\u2019ll take legitimate organic growth.<\/p>\n<p>The single itself is a Lewis Capaldi song in the established model, but obviously his personal history lends it more weight than it would have in the hands of an <em>X Factor<\/em> contestant. While it\u2019s about as subtle as a brick to the face, I\u2019m in the mood to run with it.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody else in Britain is up for releasing a single against Lewis Capaldi, but Netflix has its own ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>31. HUNTR\/X, Ejae, Audrey Nuna &amp; Rei Ami<\/strong><strong>\u00a0&#8211; \u201cGolden\u201d<br \/>\n40. Saja Boys, Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo &amp; samUIL Lee\u00a0&#8211; \u201cYour Idol\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cWppAbqm9I8?si=4Hy9C_ndnK0Ns-OK\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These three tracks all come from the soundtrack of\u00a0<em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>, a Netflix release. I\u2019m not sure Netflix did anything to actually promote this in the UK beyond sticking it in people\u2019s recommendations and hoping. I remember seeing it but assuming it was a modern <em>Jem and the Holograms<\/em> and moving on. In fact, it\u2019s a theatrical standard release from the studio that did the <em>Spider-Verse<\/em> films, and while the soundtrack doesn\u2019t have any big KPop artists on it, it does have legit KPop songwriters and producers. It seems to have taken off through genuine word of mouth. In fact, for that purpose, it may well have been better off on Netflix than it would have been with a cinematic release &#8211; films don\u2019t get the chance to build word of mouth before being written off as flops, and a lot of the reaction to the film seems to come from people just watching it out of curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>The credits are a bit weird. HUNTR\/X (it\u2019s pronounced \u201cHuntrix\u201d) and the Saja Boys don\u2019t exist &#8211; they\u2019re the girl group who are the main characters, and the boy band who serve as the villains. The other names are real &#8211; they\u2019re the actual vocalists. The biggest name as a performer is Kevin Woo, now in his early 30s, but a member of the boy band U-KISS in his youth. However, Ejae is more significant here. She spent 10 years in the Kpop system without ever actually making it to a launched band, then turned to songwriting with rather more success. She\u2019s one of the main songwriters for the album, and the lead singer on \u201cGolden\u201d here.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re all good tracks which could well climb further on their merits. \u201cGolden\u201d is, I suspect, the sort of record Jason Loo is hearing in his head when he\u2019s writing <em>Dazzler<\/em>. Despite a bit of plot set-up in the first verse, it\u2019s an actual pop song that functions independently of the parent film, and could actually climb to be a legitimate hit. It\u2019s a clever piece of writing, too &#8211; part of the plot hinges on the fact that only one character can hit the high notes in \u201cGolden\u201d, but rather than do the obvious thing of a plaintive ballad, they\u2019ve written a Eurovision-style pop song that just\u00a0<em>keeps going higher &#8211; <\/em>in a way that doesn\u2019t overshadow the song. \u201cHow It\u2019s Done\u201d could be described as a Blackpink pastiche, except for the fact that it really is a Teddy Park production.<\/p>\n<p>And the Saja Boys track seems to have had the remit to do a demonic boyband record that will pass for normal unless you\u2019re paying close attention &#8211; which means it takes the standard boy band tropes and dials them up\u00a0<em>just slightly<\/em> into creepily possessive. (The video above is the edited version from the movie itself, by the way &#8211; the soundtrack version is a full length song.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>37. Alex Warren &amp; Ros\u00e9 &#8211; \u201cOn My Mind\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AX0jQYaIeDc?si=-v5pRIt2fHfYwc_X\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Look, even Alex Warren needs KPop input this week. This enters one place ahead of \u201cAPT\u201d, which\u00a0<em>still<\/em> hasn\u2019t left the top 40 after 37 weeks. That\u2019s proved to be an outlier for Ros\u00e9, though, with the follow-up \u201cToxic to the End\u201d limping to number 72. I\u2019d rather hear Ros\u00e9 doing something more interesting, but it\u2019s an okay single. It\u2019s promoting the upcoming special edition of his album.<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cNice to Each Other\u201d by Olivia Dean<\/strong> climbs 18-15, two weeks after it peaked at 16.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cIllegal\u201d by<\/strong> <strong>Pinkpantheress<\/strong> climbs 36-22. That\u2019s her highest position since \u201cNice to Meet You\u201d got a week at number 20 in 2023; her only single to do any better than that was \u201cBoy\u2019s A Liar\u201d, which reached number 2 at the start of that year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cNo Broke Boys\u201d by Disco Lines &amp; Tinashe<\/strong> climbs 26-23.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHigh on Me\u201d by Rossi &amp; Jazzu<\/strong> climbs 33-28.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lorde\u2019s \u201cWhat Was That\u201d is a re-entry at 35 (on the back of the release of the parent album), so there are five records leaving the top 40:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Days\u201d by Chrystal<\/strong>, which peaked at 4 and had 30 weeks on the chart.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cBirds of a Feather\u201d by Billie Eilish<\/strong>, which has been around for over a year, give or take a month\u2019s gap over Christmas. It peaked at 2 last July.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cCops &amp; Robbers\u201d by Sammy Virji &amp; Skepta<\/strong>, after a single week at 39.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cWe Never Dated\u201d by<\/strong> <strong>Sombr<\/strong>, which only gets a single week at 37.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHairdresser\u201d by Skye Newman<\/strong>, with a 9-week run and a peak of 15.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cTell Me\u201d by Sonny Fodera &amp; Clementine Douglas<\/strong>, which only got to 23 but lasted 15 weeks in the top 40.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Lorde &#8211; \u201cVirgin\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Includes the single \u201cWhat Was That\u201d, which just missed the top 10. It\u2019s her first number 1 album, but all her previous albums have made the top 5.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Seven of them. It\u2019s enormous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Rod Stewart &#8211; \u201cUltimate Hits\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hphwfq1wLJs?si=bClIbs3ok2EoPNV-\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>30-track retrospective timed for his 80th birthday. Sadly, it doesn\u2019t include his 1974 number 12 single \u201cYou Can Make Me Dance Sing or Anything (Even Take The Dog For a Walk, Mend A Fuse, Fold Away The Ironing Board, Or Any Other Domestic Shortcomings)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40.
