{"id":134,"date":"2009-12-14T20:25:28","date_gmt":"2009-12-14T20:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=134"},"modified":"2009-12-14T20:34:38","modified_gmt":"2009-12-14T20:34:38","slug":"number-1s-of-2009-13-december-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=134","title":{"rendered":"Number 1s of 2009: 13 December 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wasn&#8217;t expecting to write another one of these until next week, when the <em>X Factor<\/em> winner&#8217;s single is virtually guaranteed to become the Christmas number one.\u00a0 But, as it turns out, after two weeks the Peter Kay charity single has run out of steam enough for a normal record to snatch a week at the top.<\/p>\n<p>If you think that winning singles from talent shows don&#8217;t really count, then this is effectively the last &#8220;proper&#8221; number one of the year.\u00a0 And in a happy symmetry, it&#8217;s from the same woman who dethroned Alexandra Burke back in January to start the year.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/qrO4YZeyl0I&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/qrO4YZeyl0I&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>As if you need telling, that&#8217;s <strong><em>Lady Gaga, &#8220;Bad Romance&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the lead single from &#8220;The Fame Monster&#8221;, officially a reissue of her album &#8220;The Fame&#8221; with a second CD of new material.\u00a0 Given the price point and the number of new songs, they could just about have gotten away with billing it as her second album, with a free copy of &#8220;The Fame&#8221; thrown in.\u00a0 Then again, it&#8217;s hardly a massive departure from her previous singles (unsurprisingly, since it&#8217;s by the same producer), so maybe this is the best way of presenting it.\u00a0 Albums are an artificial format in the digital age, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>This is her third number one of the year, following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y5Xq51eLJ94\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Let&#8217;s Dance&#8221;<\/a> in January and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tH6CpnhwIiw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Poker Face&#8221;<\/a> in March.\u00a0 That equals the Black Eyed Peas&#8217; record.\u00a0 But then, they only had three singles out in 2009 (plus will.i.am making a guest appearance on a Cheryl Cole track).\u00a0 Lady Gaga managed a total of seven top 40 hits this year, the others being &#8220;Paparazzi&#8221; (number 4), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1cnv7uKYcJo\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Lovegame&#8221;<\/a> (number 19), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-XwxKVBNbrQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Chillin'&#8221;<\/a> (with Wale, number 12), and the album track <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0M71VrEBuFA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Telephone&#8221;<\/a> (number 30).\u00a0 Turns out there&#8217;s a seven-minute version of the video to &#8220;Paparazzi&#8221;, so let&#8217;s see if it makes any more sense that way.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/d2smz_1L2_0&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/d2smz_1L2_0&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Well, maybe a little bit. Still, I&#8217;m all for pop stars who want to make videos as absurd as that. It&#8217;s what they&#8217;re <em>for<\/em>, after all.<\/p>\n<p>Seven hits in a year is a lot &#8211; actually, she could still make it eight, depending on when the single version of Beyonce&#8217;s &#8220;Videophone&#8221; is released, because she&#8217;s on that too.\u00a0 It&#8217;s definitely been her year.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not completely getting away from <em>X Factor<\/em> with this record, because it did climb to the top after she plugged it on the Sunday night show.\u00a0 However, that&#8217;s following a seven week climb up the charts &#8211; this is a genuine hit rather than a one-week hype job.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not as though the <em>X Factor<\/em> results show is a guarantee of chart success.\u00a0 The other guest on the show that night was Janet Jackson, and her new single has tanked, entering this week at number 73.<\/p>\n<p>This aside, it&#8217;s been a quiet time on the singles chart.\u00a0 Everyone in their right mind is either waiting for this week (for the Christmas chart) or January (when things get back to normal).\u00a0 But here are the other records to chart over the last two weeks&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BJ5QB_BR9gY\" target=\"_blank\">Timbaland featuring SoShy &amp; Nelly Furtado, &#8220;Morning After Dark.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Lead single from the &#8220;Shock Value 2&#8221; album, out in time for Christmas.\u00a0 Turns out that the way to signify heavy autotune when lipsynching is to gurn heavily.\u00a0 Who knew?\u00a0 Number 6 and climbing.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=82ruJ7QeeHg\" target=\"_blank\">Alicia Keys, &#8220;Doesn&#8217;t Mean Anything.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Plugged on the X Factor results show a couple of weeks back.\u00a0 Hopelessly drippy video.\u00a0 Number 8.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=juYSqSicV_U\" target=\"_blank\">Chuckie &amp; LMFAO, &#8220;Let the Bass Kick in Miami Bitch.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Or &#8220;Girl&#8221; if you&#8217;re listening to the radio edit.\u00a0 This anomaly is a mash-up of LMFAO&#8217;s &#8220;I&#8217;m in Miami Bitch&#8221; (a very minor hit in America which did nothing over here) and DJ Chuckie&#8217;s &#8220;Let the Bass Kick&#8221; (no idea).\u00a0 Staggeringly awful video, probably slung together by the UK label.\u00a0 Number 9.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vfiWXIQ85ho\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cheryl Cole featuring will.i.am, &#8220;3 Words.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a> Number 14 and climbing.\u00a0 The second single from the <em>X Factor <\/em>judge&#8217;s album.\u00a0 Already charted as an album track when initially released, but it&#8217;s got a video now (with clever camera tricks).\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty good, and likely to go further.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S0QFLZCH3FI\" target=\"_blank\">N-Dubz featuring Mr Hudson, &#8220;Playing With Fire.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Number 23 and climbing.\u00a0 Upcoming single already selling as a download.\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t Hudson look uncomfortable standing next to them?<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Psuc1B2cPfc\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Wogan &amp; Aled Jones, &#8220;Silver Bells&#8221;\/&#8221;Me And My Teddy Bear.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Number 27.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s third Children in Need charity single, and the second annual release from the soon-to-retire broadcasting legend and the bloke who did &#8220;Walking in the Air.&#8221;\u00a0 Everything you&#8217;d imagine.\u00a0 Not as memorable as Wogan&#8217;s seventies novelty hit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ElnCI1fkfFM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Floral Dance&#8221;<\/a>, but then what is?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6JsYPd12pcQ\" target=\"_blank\">30 Seconds to Mars, &#8220;Kings and Queens.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Jared Leto&#8217;s band.\u00a0 Peaked at number 28 last week.\u00a0 Video is almost nine minutes long and is apparently &#8220;A Bartholomew Cubbins Film&#8221;, which sounds so unpromising that I stopped it there.\u00a0 Let me know if it&#8217;s any good, will you?<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3UqWKSSqyh0\" target=\"_blank\">The Saturdays, &#8220;Ego&#8221;.<\/a>\u00a0 <\/strong>Number 35.\u00a0 Much better than the last single.\u00a0 As for the video, I&#8217;ve seen better superhero costumes on trick-or-treaters.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FbDMUijBP2U\" target=\"_blank\">Lily Allen, &#8220;Who&#8217;d Have Known.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Peaked at 39 last week.\u00a0 Classic error of sampling a much better record (Take That&#8217;s &#8220;Shine&#8221;).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>And finally, this year&#8217;s obligatory clutch of old Christmas singles re-entering on download sales: &#8220;Fairytale of New York&#8221; by the Pogues at 18, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_ymlnxMZkXA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;All I Want for Christmas is You&#8221;<\/a> by Mariah Carey at 19, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3354flS1KJs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Last Christmas&#8221;
