10 January 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the Christmas period over and <em>X Factor<\/em> out of the way at last, the charts finally return to business as usual, with 2010&#8217;s first wave of new releases.\u00a0 Apparently it was a fairly close-run thing this week, with new entries at numbers 1 and 2 running neck and neck over the week.\u00a0 But the first new number one of 2010 is <strong>&#8220;Replay&#8221; by Iyaz.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZoG5jJ3E8rg&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZoG5jJ3E8rg&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Iyaz is Keidran Jones, a singer from the Virgin Islands, and this is his debut single in the UK.\u00a0 His record company are trying to spin him as somebody that Sean Kingston discovered on MySpace; the reality seems to be that he got picked up internationally on the strength of his Caribbean radio hit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=10YjoFKiGJc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Island Girls.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Replay&#8221; already reached number two in America, and now it heads to Europe.\u00a0 It&#8217;s produced by JR Rotem, the man who brought you JLS&#8217;s &#8220;Everybody In Love&#8221; and a horde of equally banal R&amp;B pop singles.\u00a0 This one is at least fairly catchy, and the autotune has been kept in sane boundaries, but that aside, it&#8217;s really just more of the same.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s fine, it&#8217;s inoffensive, but I&#8217;m slightly surprised that it&#8217;s sold quite this well, when\u00a0it really doesn&#8217;t have all that much to mark it out from the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>The number 2 single is &#8220;Riverside (Let&#8217;s Go)&#8221; by Dutch producer Sidney Samson,\u00a0also making his UK chart debut.\u00a0 It&#8217;s\u00a0a\u00a0dance single which has been around for months, based heavily upon a sample of Tupac Shakur swearing in <em>Juice<\/em>.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the Dutch version of the single (with swearing intact, if you care).<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/V775PPuBc7Y&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/V775PPuBc7Y&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>The British label,\u00a0 however, has decided that this isn&#8217;t radio friendly enough, and so they&#8217;ve bang on a rap from Wizard Sleeve (no, me neither) to recycle a vocal from another single\u00a0entirely.\u00a0 The result is certainly more airplay friendly, but it&#8217;s not exactly the same record.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Pde2j70eiC8&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Pde2j70eiC8&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Purists aren&#8217;t exactly happy about this, apparently.\u00a0 Which is pretty trivial in itself, but oddly, the original version doesn&#8217;t seem to have been made available in Britain on iTunes &#8211; instead, your options are a bewildering array of vocal mixes.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t imagine what they were thinking there.<\/p>\n<p>Also entering the top 40 this week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CHVhwcOg6y8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;One Time&#8221; by Justin Beiber<\/a><\/strong>, at number 14.\u00a0 First UK release for the 15-year-old Canadian, who had four hits in North America last year and is being pushed as a teen idol.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1TwqE2X55Wg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dog Days are Over&#8221; by Florence and the Machine<\/a><\/strong>, at number 23.\u00a0 Spontaneous chart appearance for their excellent second single, which missed the top 75 on its original release in late 2008.\u00a0 Since then, the parent album has been a big hit, and the track has picked up a bit of airplay on TV trailers, as well as cropping up in a lot of year-in-review shows.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s their third top 40 hit.\u00a0 Their official current single is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mzMcNAe4nE8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve Got The Love&#8221;, <\/a>currently at number 5 and climbing.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JZ1Mi77nogQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;In For The Kill&#8221; by LaRoux<\/a><\/strong> at number 28.\u00a0 This reached number 2 last spring, and again, it seems to have returned to the chart because of year-in-review airplay over Christmas.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b6CleYqU2_o\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Where We Belong&#8221; by the Lostprophets<\/a><\/strong> at number 32.\u00a0 Eleventh top 40 hit for the Welsh rock band, who&#8217;ve been around since 2001.\u00a0 Radio-friendly anthem.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iYmmh9zkpQM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Empire State of Mind, Part II&#8221; by Alicia Keys<\/a><\/strong> at number 35.\u00a0 For those who prefer the single without Jay-Z.\u00a0 The original is still at number 18.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s-xd3NuWQI0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Pencil Full of Lead&#8221; by Paolo Nutini<\/a><\/strong> at number 36.\u00a0 Re-entry for a record that peaked at number 17 in November, on the tailcoats of a surge of sales for his album after Christmas.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9VhZDiG7ye0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Kings and Queens&#8221;
