{"id":193,"date":"2010-01-28T21:20:31","date_gmt":"2010-01-28T21:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=193"},"modified":"2010-01-28T21:20:31","modified_gmt":"2010-01-28T21:20:31","slug":"number-1s-of-2010-24-january-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=193","title":{"rendered":"Number 1s of 2010: 24 January 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iyaz managed two weeks at the top with &#8220;Replay&#8221;, but gets knocked off the top a little earlier than planned.\u00a0 As I&#8217;ve mentioned before, record companies still like to promote records for ages before officially releasing them, even though promoting an unavailable product which has already been released in other countries is a huge incentive to piracy.\u00a0 The new number one was supposed to come out in February, but when knock-off clone versions started selling on iTunes, they rush-released it.\u00a0 Turns out they didn&#8217;t need the weeks of hype anyway, as the track goes straight to number one on its first week of release (though by a relatively slim margin).\u00a0 And the track in question is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/psuRGfAaju4&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/psuRGfAaju4&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<strong>&#8220;Fireflies&#8221; by Owl City<\/strong>.\u00a0 This\u00a0is the second consecutive number one to be a\u00a0debut hit, if that interests you.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s actually the lead\u00a0single from Owl City&#8217;s second album, but nobody paid much attention to the first one over here.\u00a0 More to the point, he&#8217;s now got a major label behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Owl City is Adam Young.\u00a0 He comes from Minnesota and he&#8217;s another of these acts that supposed got started by building a following on MySpace &#8211; though I take these stories with a pinch of salt.\u00a0 He makes synthpop, and this record is, shall we say, instantly reminiscent of the Postal Service.<\/p>\n<p>The Postal Service, if you&#8217;re not familiar with them, were a side project of Ben Gibbard, the lead singer of Death Cab For Cutie.\u00a0 They released one album, &#8220;Give Up&#8221;, back in 2003.\u00a0 Despite good reviews, they&#8217;ve never charted in the UK, so it&#8217;s raised a few eyebrows that Owl City are having much more success making strikingly similar records. Here&#8217;s the Postal Service&#8217;s best known song (and best video), &#8220;Such Great Heights&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/hMOkfI7wCrI&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/hMOkfI7wCrI&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s &#8220;The District Sleeps Alone Tonight&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/XVB1UBSe7fY&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/XVB1UBSe7fY&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>You get the idea.\u00a0 Now, Owl City has taken a lot of stick for ripping off the Postal Service.\u00a0 To be honest, I have some sympathy for him on that score.\u00a0 While there&#8217;s plainly a big influence there, it&#8217;s not like people haven&#8217;t built entire careers on re-hashing the Beatles.\u00a0 If one guy copies your style, it&#8217;s a rip-off; if two hundred people do it, it&#8217;s a genre.\u00a0 And besides, &#8220;Give Up&#8221; came out seven years ago.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not as though they&#8217;re a currently active band.\u00a0 The statute of limitations on recycling their ideas has surely expired.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Besides, a quick flick through some of his other tracks on YouTube suggests the resemblance isn&#8217;t usually quite this pronounced.\u00a0 It also suggests that most of his other records are a bit heavy on the presets for my tastes.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eqbOtK91lpI\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s the American follow-up single, &#8220;Vanilla Twilight&#8221;, for example.<\/a>\u00a0 It&#8217;s not very good, but it&#8217;s also not very like the Postal Service.\u00a0 (These may not be wholly unrelated.)<\/p>\n<p>I quite like &#8220;Fireflies&#8221;, to be honest.\u00a0 Yes, it&#8217;s a bit twee, and yes, it&#8217;s not as good as the Postal Service.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s quite catchy, and if you judge it on its own merits, it&#8217;s a perfectly pleasant song.\u00a0\u00a0 And while it&#8217;s very like another band, it&#8217;s still quite different from most records in the chart.\u00a0 That said, if &#8220;Vanilla Twilight&#8221; is representative of his other output, I wouldn&#8217;t be too shocked if this turns out to a one-hit wonder.<\/p>\n<p>Also passing through the charts since the last time we did this:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PfNwO9HNqh4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t Stop Believin'&#8221; by the Cast of Glee<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it&#8217;s finally airing in Britain.\u00a0 This is at number 3 and climbing, and the original Journey version is also in the top 10.\u00a0 The other singles from the show haven&#8217;t made anywhere near the same impact (largely because this is the only one getting airplay), and they&#8217;re mainly hovering just outside the top 40.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-So9lXFt5rM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Won&#8217;t Go Quietly&#8221; by Example<\/a><\/strong> at number 6.\u00a0 Second (and bigger) hit for rapper Elliot Gleave, who&#8217;s apparently decided to reinvent himself as an electropop act.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wauIGhax9xg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Stay Too Long&#8221; by Plan B<\/a><\/strong>, which peaked at number 9 last week.\u00a0 Second hit for this guy, who&#8217;s usually billed as a rapper, but has plainly drifted quite some way from the usual parameters of that genre.\u00a0 This is the lead single from his new album, and it&#8217;s pretty good.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not rap, but who cares?<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eV_WunW1KR8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;One Shot&#8221; by JLS<\/a><\/strong>, at number 10 and climbing.\u00a0 Third single for the former <em>X Factor<\/em> contestants.\u00a0 Not officially out as a single yet.\u00a0 Rather forgettable.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wmmDHv1Q6SE\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&#8220;Echo&#8221; by Girls Can&#8217;t Catch<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>at number 19.\u00a0 Second hit for the competent but generic girl band who are struggling to find a market niche.\u00a0 The name was actually rejected by the Saturdays, which says it all, really.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mAh--lH0H3U\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Many of Horror&#8221; by Biffy Clyro<\/a><\/strong> at number 20.\u00a0 A 13th hit for the Scottish rock band, who&#8217;ve been around longer than you might think.\u00a0 Growing on me.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a81eP2E8MEQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Do You Remember&#8221; by Jay Sean, Sean Paul &amp; Lil Jon<\/a><\/strong> at number 23.\u00a0 This week&#8217;s autotuned R&amp;B single.\u00a0 Gimmick: a shouty bloke.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qrOeGCJdZe4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;All the Right Moves&#8221; by OneRepublic<\/a><\/strong> at number 26 and climbing.\u00a0 Third and (thus far) smallest hit for these guys, though lead singer Ryan Tedder has written plenty of songs for other people.\u00a0 Not bad.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kORDW4su4r8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Take a Bow&#8221; by the Cast of Glee<\/a><\/strong> at number 36.\u00a0 Probably the benchmark for Glee singles that aren&#8217;t &#8220;Don&#8217;t Stop Believin'&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1e0u11rgd9Q\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Cousins&#8221; by Vampire Weekend<\/a><\/strong>, peaking last week at number 39.\u00a0 Their second hit, narrowly missing the number 38 peak of &#8220;Oxford Comma.&#8221;\u00a0 Their second album entered at number 3 in the same week.\u00a0 Video is a bit They Might Be Giants, isn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 I approve.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gqCFZvU33WU\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Shut it Down&#8221;
