10 November 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a busy week, particularly if you count all the re-entries from Eminem singles that were disqualified from the chart under the instant gratification rules last week. \u00a0(I won&#8217;t bother.) \u00a0Meanwhile, the number 1 slot changes hands for the sixth straight week. \u00a0Hmm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Awolnation &#8211; &#8220;Sail&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PPtSKimbjOU?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I don&#8217;t know quite what&#8217;s going on here. \u00a0Awolnation are a curious rock\/synthpop hybrid act from California. \u00a0This is their first UK hit, and it&#8217;s been climbing from the lower reaches for a few weeks. \u00a0It has the odd distinction of having spent a year on the Billboard chart in America without ever making the top 20. \u00a0It&#8217;s from an album that&#8217;s been out for two years, though, so its appearance on the top 40 now is a little odd. \u00a0As best as I can figure, it&#8217;s here because the album is being reissued in a belated special edition.<\/p>\n<p>Another oddity about &#8220;Sail&#8221; is that there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/JaAWdljhD5o\" target=\"_blank\">a fan-made video<\/a> which has way, way more views than the official version. \u00a0Admittedly, it&#8217;s fan-made by actual filmmakers, but it&#8217;s got 77 million views, which is an awful lot for something like that.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">36. \u00a0Jessie J &#8211; &#8220;Sexy Lady&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This already made number 22 as an album download in October, because it&#8217;s in a make-up advert. \u00a0The adverts have continued, but it&#8217;s only now returning to the chart, presumably because they&#8217;re starting the promotion for its &#8220;official&#8221; single release. \u00a0No video yet though.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/gotEw1JrByY\" target=\"_blank\">31. \u00a0 Justin Bieber &#8211; &#8220;Bad Day&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another &#8220;Music Mondays&#8221; release. \u00a0Very much more of the same. \u00a0At this rate he&#8217;s going to be missing the top 40 by the end of this project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0Taylor Swift featuring Gary Lightbody &#8211; &#8220;The Last Time&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A track from Swift&#8217;s album &#8220;Red&#8221;, rather oddly performed on last week&#8217;s\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em>\u00a0results show despite the fact that it isn&#8217;t a single, doesn&#8217;t have a video, and has been available for months. \u00a0There&#8217;s been a lot of this sort of thing on the results shows this year, which is why we haven&#8217;t seen anywhere near the chart impact of previous years. \u00a0(Another reason is that they&#8217;ve had Lady Gaga on, promoting songs that aren&#8217;t eligible to chart.)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the first solo chart credit for Gary Lightbody, the lead singer of Snow Patrol.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. \u00a0Katy B &#8211; &#8220;5am&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VDE2OMZtExY?rel=0\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second single from her second album. \u00a0The last one was &#8220;What Love Is Made Of&#8221;, which got to 21, so this is a bit more like it &#8211; after all, she was placing in the top ten with tracks from the first album. \u00a0Katy B&#8217;s got her niche as a songwriter with both feet planted firmly in clubland, and this dutifully ticks off the 5ams and the valiums. \u00a0I like her in small doses, but boy, you know what you&#8217;re getting with Katy B.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;I See Fire&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uf8Fwiy0Bkc?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This was made available midweek as an instant grat track for pre-orders of the <em>Hobbit<\/em> film soundtrack. \u00a0You can, of course, also buy it individually &#8211; and I imagine Sheeran&#8217;s ultra-loyal fan base will be doing exactly that, since the rest of the album is 28 tracks of Howard Shore. \u00a0It&#8217;s Sheeran&#8217;s biggest hit as lead artist since &#8220;Lego House&#8221; made the top 5 in 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Britney Spears &#8211; &#8220;Work Bitch&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pt8VYOfr8To?rel=0\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Britney Spears long since ceased to be a singer so much as a brand name to be attached to autotuned synthpop productions, and this is pretty much exactly what you&#8217;d expect from a 2013 Britney Spears single called &#8220;Work Bitch&#8221; &#8211; which is to say, it&#8217;s actually not a bad production job, and it plays to her brand much as you&#8217;d expect. \u00a0If you&#8217;re feeling charitable, you <em>could<\/em> read it as self-reproach.\u00a0 There are six writers credited for this thing, including Spears herself, will.i.am and Sebastian Ingrosso.<\/p>\n<p>This is swan diving down the iTunes chart, so sales for it must have been hugely front loaded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0Little Mix &#8211; &#8220;Move&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RwD4eJGxPc4?rel=0\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The lead single from the\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> winners&#8217; second album. \u00a0It&#8217;s a strange choice &#8211; it&#8217;s certainly doing the right thing by foregrounding their harmonies and presenting them as proper singers, not just reality show alumni. \u00a0But it&#8217;s also missing a chorus, which is particularly odd since it&#8217;s got a rousing bridge that feels like it ought to be leading into one. \u00a0It turns out to be a bridge to nowhere. \u00a0For all that, it&#8217;s growing on me &#8211; \u00a0it&#8217;s at least an interesting record, once you realise that it&#8217;s never going to get to the chorus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Storm Queen &#8211; &#8220;Look Right Through&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IGpAf5VDO3Q?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An anonymous dance record going straight to number one &#8211; something we don&#8217;t see quite so often these days. \u00a0Storm Queen is Morgan Geist, a producer from New Jersey, though it&#8217;s basically a collaboration with singer Damon Scott, who can apparently also be found busking on the New York subway. \u00a0It&#8217;s certainly not going to be at the top next week; it&#8217;s already on its way down the iTunes chart.<\/p>\n<p>The video above is the original US version from 2011. \u00a0However, the UK label is actually promoting a completely different mix, which now has its own entirely different video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9c3EQhtf9-U?rel=0\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">I prefer the original, to be honest, but I&#8217;m sure Ministry of Sound know their market. \u00a0The remixer here is Mark Kinchen, or &#8220;MK&#8221;. \u00a0He&#8217;s from Detroit, and he&#8217;s been around forever &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">he did the remix of <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rSzpOUwiLkc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Push The Feeling On&#8221; by the Nightcrawlers<\/a> that got to number 3 back in 1992.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As for Storm Queen, that&#8217;s a collaboration of DJ Morgan Geist and singer Damon Scott, who is (or was at the relevant time) a subway busker in New York. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/viewpointmag.com\/2012\/03\/01\/the-singer-in-the-subway-damon-c-scott-and-storm-queen\/\" target=\"_blank\">There&#8217;s a lengthy article about Scott here, if you&#8217;re interested.<\/a> \u00a0Apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/iZ9mV8ZSDW4\" target=\"_blank\">a video of him singing &#8220;Someone Like You&#8221;<\/a> went viral last year.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart, it&#8217;s virtually a clean sweep of the top 10:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Marshall Mathers LP 2&#8221; by Eminem\u00a0<\/strong>at 1, as you&#8217;d expect. \u00a0This is his seventh straight number one album.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;James Arthur&#8221; by James Arthur<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0Last year&#8217;s\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> winner. \u00a0&#8220;You&#8217;re Nobody &#8216;Til Somebody Loves You&#8221; is still in the top 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Demonstration&#8221; by Tinie Tempah<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0His second album.
