8 December 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everything&#8217;s in mid storyline this week, and I\u00a0<em>still<\/em> haven&#8217;t found time to read that second\u00a0<em>Wolverine Max<\/em> TPB, so let&#8217;s do this while it&#8217;s fresh. \u00a0It&#8217;s a quiet week on the release schedule, as we&#8217;re entering the phase where <em>regular<\/em> record promotion winds down for the Christmas break. \u00a0Which leaves the number one slot wide open for a change.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/ZFIM9c48cSM\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>39. \u00a0Justin Bieber &#8211; &#8220;Change Me&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The penultimate &#8220;Music Mondays&#8221; track is another one that would not normally have been considered for singles release in a million years. \u00a0Actually, looking back, this seems to be a weirdly uncommercial album for somebody like him. \u00a0This is the lowest charting of the nine released to date, but the tenth and final song is getting a music video and some degree of regular promotion, so I expect it to do better.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/ZoxQ4Ul_DME\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>37. \u00a0Wizzard &#8211; &#8220;I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s that time of year again, when the Christmas perennials return. \u00a0This has been an annual event since the advent of the download era, presumably because every year a new crop of teenagers suddenly feel the urge to own a copy of &#8220;Stop The Cavalry&#8221; and like. \u00a0God knows everyone else who wants these tracks must have bought them by now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day&#8221; made number 4 in 1973, and has entirely overshadowed Wizzard&#8217;s two number one hits, <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/GoJXYgVnQIQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;See My Baby Jive&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/DF5Tk_J1kvM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Angel Fingers&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(&#8220;See My Baby Jive&#8221; is basically &#8220;I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day&#8221; without the Christmas.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>34. \u00a0Leona Lewis &#8211; &#8220;One More Sleep&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j-_1-uJ6Ml4?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>From her album &#8220;Christmas &#8211; With Love&#8221;. \u00a0Yes, it&#8217;s come to that. \u00a0It&#8217;s not\u00a0<em>horrendous<\/em>, but she&#8217;s wasted on this stuff. \u00a0Lewis normally makes at least the top 20, so this is surprisingly low, but an\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> performance tonight looks to have rocketed it up the iTunes chart. \u00a0We&#8217;ll see if that&#8217;s sustained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rGKfrgqWcv0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>33. \u00a0Mumford &amp; Sons &#8211; &#8220;I Will Wait&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Did somebody do it on\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em>, then? \u00a0(Googles.) \u00a0Yes. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/JwCVW6DnbBs\" target=\"_blank\">Someone did.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Pharrell Williams &#8211; &#8220;Happy&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y6Sxv-sUYtM?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>From the soundtrack of <em>Despicable Me 2<\/em>. \u00a0This is clearly going further (it&#8217;s at 14 on iTunes right now), and it is a happy ditty indeed. \u00a0I like it. \u00a0But not enough to sit through <a href=\"http:\/\/24hoursofhappy.com\" target=\"_blank\">the 24-hour edit of the video<\/a>, and yes, that\u00a0<em>really exists<\/em>. \u00a0(The song repeats, if you&#8217;re wondering. \u00a0They don&#8217;t actually have a day-long mix.)<\/p>\n<p>Pharrell has had two number ones this year as a guest artist (&#8220;Blurred Lines&#8221; and &#8220;Get Lucky&#8221;), but perhaps surprisingly, this is only his second solo hit as the lead credited artist. \u00a0The other was &#8220;Frontin'&#8221;, which made the top 10 way back in 2003.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0Rihanna &#8211; &#8220;What Now&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 14, which is a bit more like it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20. \u00a0All About She &#8211; &#8220;Higher (Free)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lW3KwwWMfHw?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>All About She are producers Jon Clare and James Tadgell, and singer Vanya Taylor. \u00a0Despite the video, they&#8217;re not American. \u00a0They&#8217;re from High Wycombe. \u00a0This is their first hit, and it&#8217;s a very good dance track. \u00a0Deserves to go higher, and might yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19. \u00a0James Arthur &#8211; &#8220;Recovery&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vxlZRrMzn6s?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Not the main version of the track, I believe, but it&#8217;s the only one with a video. \u00a0This is the guy who won\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> last year, and sales here have certainly been helped by a performance on the results show last week. \u00a0Still not a great chart place. \u00a0There&#8217;s no denying he&#8217;s got a voice, though.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/j9jbdgZidu8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>16. \u00a0The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl &#8211; &#8220;Fairytale of New York&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Surely everyone must have this by now? \u00a0 Surely they must issue it to new humans when they emerge from the womb? \u00a0(I&#8217;ll have to ask the boy.) \u00a0Originally a number 2 hit in 1987, this\u00a0<em>was<\/em> the Pogues&#8217; biggest UK hit. \u00a0If you&#8217;re wondering, the next-biggest Pogues hit was <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/TzWs3zd_BZQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Irish Rover&#8221;<\/a> (a collaboration with the Dubliners that made number 8 the same year), and the next-biggest McCall hit was <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/T4c2kO5ZE38\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;A New England&#8221;<\/a> (number 7 in 1985).<\/p>\n<p><strong>15. \u00a0Rebecca Ferguson &#8211; &#8220;I Hope&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pUUU5LSbYHA?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Highest new entry in a seriously dead week for major new releases. \u00a0Ferguson was the runner-up in 2010&#8217;s\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> (that&#8217;s the year Matt Cardle won), and she&#8217;s more of an albums artist, but crops up on the singles chart occasionally. \u00a0It&#8217;s the lead single from her second album &#8220;Freedom&#8221;, and while it&#8217;s sub-Adele, it probably deserved better than to tail in one place behind&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/yXQViqx6GMY\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>14. \u00a0Mariah Carey &#8211; &#8220;All I Want For Christmas Is You&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I mean, seriously, people. \u00a0It\u00a0<em>is<\/em> the best thing she ever recorded, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0Jason DeRulo &#8211; &#8220;Trumpets&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up 14. \u00a0Damn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Avicii &#8211; &#8220;Hey Brother&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up 6, for his third top 10 hit of the year. \u00a0It&#8217;s been a good 2013 for him.<\/p>\n<p>And after much unexciting reshuffling among the existing denizens of the top 10&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Lily Allen &#8211; &#8220;Somewhere Only We Know&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ve9cBwI-pAg?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Rebounding from number 4 to take a second week at number 1. \u00a0And it&#8217;s still at number 1 on iTunes now&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, her official single &#8220;Hard Out Here&#8221; has dropped out of the top 40 entirely after two weeks, and is now sitting at 50. \u00a0It&#8217;s all very odd.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart, it&#8217;s Music For Grannies week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Midnight Memories&#8221; by One Direction<\/strong>\u00a0stays at number 1 for a second week. \u00a0Been a while since I&#8217;ve said that.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A Musical Affair&#8221; by Il Divo<\/strong> at number 5. \u00a0Pop classical tenors from the Stable Of Cowell.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Freedom&#8221; by Rebecca Ferguson<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0We&#8217;ve mentioned the single.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Christmas Album&#8221; by Richard &amp; Adam<\/strong> at 24. \u00a0More pop classics. \u00a0They&#8217;re\u00a0<em>Britain&#8217;s Got Talent<\/em> alumni, though they didn&#8217;t win.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Christmas, With Love&#8221; by Leona Lewis<\/strong> at 25.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Britney Jean&#8221; by Britney Spears<\/strong> at 34. \u00a0No, it&#8217;s not a B-sides compilation, it&#8217;s not a special edition &#8211;\u00a0<em>that&#8217;s as high as the new Britney Spears album could get. \u00a0<\/em>Britney Spears has never previously had an album land below 13. \u00a0This is a spectacular bomb, and her label will surely be viewing it as a catastrophe. \u00a0You can&#8217;t blame this solely on lack of promotion (even if she did give only one interview to promote it in the UK &#8211;
