{"id":2320,"date":"2013-12-17T22:37:44","date_gmt":"2013-12-17T22:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2320"},"modified":"2013-12-17T22:37:44","modified_gmt":"2013-12-17T22:37:44","slug":"charts-15-december-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2320","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 15 December 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the final chart before Christmas number one, which means it&#8217;s a calm week before next week&#8217;s flurry of novelty records overambitiously going head to head with the\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> winner (for, yes, they&#8217;ve gone back to gunning for the Christmas Number One this year).<\/p>\n<p>Still, there&#8217;s a bit of activity this week &#8211; and some massive climbers that would have been high new entries if they hadn&#8217;t snuck into the low thirties last week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/E8gmARGvPlI\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>40. \u00a0Wham! &#8211; &#8220;Last Christmas&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s token back catalogue re-entry. \u00a0Good to see Andrew Ridgley remains financially secure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Sub Focus &#8211; &#8220;Turn Back Time&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gWRJbHmvtIU?list=PLCXZR3pYKvDwmlQX2WS6HqSKK0b_SWjn7\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Ah, a song that rhymes &#8220;devotion&#8221; with &#8220;ocean&#8221;! \u00a0Nineties dance is truly back. \u00a0This isn&#8217;t officially a single right now, being officially released on 22 December in order to chart in the dead week after Christmas, but the album&#8217;s been out since September, allowing it to pick up sales as an album track download.<\/p>\n<p>The uncredited singer is Yolanda Quartey, who&#8217;s replicating a sample from a Todd Terry track. \u00a0Weirdly, Terry still gets a co-writer&#8217;s credit, at which point you&#8217;d have thought they might as well just use the sample and be done with it.<\/p>\n<p>Its Sub Focus&#8217; third hit of the year, following &#8220;Endorphins&#8221; and &#8220;Turn it Around&#8221;, both of which made the outskirts of the top 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>35. \u00a0Kid Ink featuring Chris Brown &#8211; &#8220;Show Me&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xKkb13IU_DE?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kid Ink is a Californian rapper, and this is the lead single from his second album (his major label debut). \u00a0It&#8217;s got Chris Brown on it, which is always a disappointment. \u00a0The hook is a slowed-down sample of the best-known mix of <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Ps2Jc28tQrw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Show Me Love&#8221; by Robin S<\/a>, which is a far better record, and made the top 10 twenty years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/qnD1hwjR3WU\" target=\"_blank\">33. \u00a0Justin Bieber featuring Chance The Rapper &#8211; &#8220;Confident&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another &#8220;Music Mondays&#8221; release. \u00a0So apparently there&#8217;s one more of these, which gets the music video? \u00a0Debut hit for Chance The Rapper, who&#8217;s from Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28. \u00a0Chase &amp; Status featuring Jacob Banks &#8211; &#8220;Alive&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t9pU9FPz-dk?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s highest new entry, which tells you what a dull week it is for new releases. It&#8217;s a surprisingly low placing, considering that the last two Chase &amp; Status singles both made the top 10. \u00a0The video probably works rather better as a short film than as an advert for the song; it&#8217;s a rather bleak example of the random globetrotting that you tend to get in Rudimental videos.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Banks is a songwriter from Birmingham who is presumably being given the soft launch through guest appearances. \u00a0This is his first top 40 appearance, though he was also on a Wretch 32 single that missed the chart in August.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18. \u00a0Jessie J &#8211; &#8220;Thunder&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>7. \u00a0Jason Derulo &#8211; &#8220;Trumpets&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>4. \u00a0Pharrell Williams &#8211; &#8220;Happy&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>3. \u00a0Leona Lewis &#8211; &#8220;One More Sleep&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up 13, up 5, up 26, and up 31 respectively. \u00a0So it&#8217;s not exactly dead in the top half of the chart. \u00a0Pharrell&#8217;s getting traction as promotion takes off; Lewis suddenly careered up the charts after an <em>X Factor<\/em> appearance drew her Christmas single to the attention of a mainstream audience that likes it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Lily Allen &#8211; &#8220;Somewhere Only We Know&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Third week at number 1. \u00a0Of course, it has literally no chance of being number 1 next week. \u00a0But it&#8217;s still a three week number one, the longest since &#8220;Burn&#8221; by Ellie Goulding in August and September.<\/p>\n<p>Current chart position of her\u00a0<em>official<\/em>\u00a0single &#8220;Hard Out Here&#8221;: 77.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Swings Both Ways&#8221; by Robbie Williams<\/strong> returns to number 1, thanks to its gifting potential. \u00a0I forgot to mention, when this was originally number 1, that it&#8217;s officially the 1,000th UK number 1 album. \u00a0But then (a) who cares, really?, and (b) it&#8217;s a particularly dubious statistic because it&#8217;s not the 1,000th number one on this chart, it&#8217;s the 1,000th number one in the officially recognised canon &#8211; which includes other charts that predate the current one, plus a different chart that continued publishing during a strike period in the 1970s.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Beyonce&#8221; by Beyonce<\/strong> at number 5 &#8211; a surprise midweek release, charting here on two days sales. \u00a0It&#8217;s the only new album released this week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the final chart before Christmas number one, which means it&#8217;s a calm week before next week&#8217;s flurry of novelty records overambitiously going head to head with the\u00a0X Factor winner (for, yes, they&#8217;ve gone back to gunning for the Christmas Number One this year).
