16 March 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the UK music industry likes promoting records for weeks before they&#8217;re released, but doesn&#8217;t much care for promoting records over Christmas or the early new year, it&#8217;s round about this time that we start seeing a deluge of new releases. \u00a0And lo and behold, there&#8217;s a lot of very forgettable stuff out this week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">39. \u00a0One Direction &#8211; &#8220;Midnight Memories&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bkx9kCdaaMg?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Well, that&#8217;s unexpected. \u00a0This is the title track from the current One Direction album, and as such, it&#8217;s been available since December. \u00a0Even so, it&#8217;s now been promoted to an officially released single, with a video and everything. \u00a0And it&#8217;s peaked at 39, and it&#8217;s already out of the iTunes top 75. \u00a0I&#8217;m not aware of any special circumstances here, so this seems to be a first &#8211; a One Direction single bombing out completely. \u00a0It just doesn&#8217;t seem to have interested anyone outside their fan base, who own it already.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an odd record &#8211; it seems to want to be Def Leppard, not the most obvious influence for a One Direction track.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Qc9c12q3mrc\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>24. \u00a0Avicii &#8211; &#8220;Addicted To You&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Predictably climbing 12 places after last week&#8217;s low entry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17. \u00a0The Chainsmokers &#8211; &#8220;Selfie&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kdemFfbS5H0?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Novelty hit alert. \u00a0The Chainsmokers are New York producers Andrew Winter and Alex Pall, and this is one of those dance records that&#8217;s essentially a backing track for an ironic monologue. \u00a0Weirdly stilted, but I guess it&#8217;s outside my frame of reference on a whole load of levels. \u00a0The uncredited vocalist is one Alexis Killacam, if you were wondering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. \u00a0Christina Perri &#8211; &#8220;Human&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r5yaoMjaAmE?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The lead single from her second album &#8220;Head or Heart&#8221;, which gave her two major hits back in 2011 &#8211; the talent show staple &#8220;Jar of Hearts&#8221; and the Twilight perennial &#8220;A Thousand Years&#8221;. \u00a0She hasn&#8217;t released much since then, other than a further version of &#8220;A Thousand Years&#8221; and the self-explanatory 2012 EP &#8220;A Very Merry Perri Christmas&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s a radio friendly power ballad &#8211; well, of course it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0Kylie Minogue &#8211; &#8220;Into the Blue&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fL6FaI-wJxs?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Twenty-six years into her chart career, Kylie Minogue is in the happy position that she no longer needs big hit singles to maintain her status as a major star. \u00a0Happy indeed, because her first single in two years misses the top 10, and she hasn&#8217;t actually had a\u00a0<em>really<\/em> big hit since &#8220;All the Lovers&#8221; made number 3 in 2010. \u00a0Weirdly, this was pulled as a single bundle halfway through the week, and is now available simply as a standalone download from the upcoming album &#8220;Kiss Me Once&#8221; (where it doubles as the instant grat promotion for pre-orders).<\/p>\n<p>Mind you, for a record I initially dismissed as instantly forgettable, this turns out to stick in the head a bit. \u00a0But it&#8217;s already out of the iTunes top 20, so I don&#8217;t fancy its chances of sticking around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Pixie Lott &#8211; &#8220;Nasty&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F7POcRxmpHQ?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The lead single from her third album. \u00a0&#8220;Nasty&#8221; doesn&#8217;t sound like a song title that was originally intended for Pixie Lott, and indeed it isn&#8217;t &#8211; this is a Cee-Lo Green composition that was originally intended for Christina Aguilera as part of the soundtrack to her film\u00a0<em>Burlesque<\/em>. \u00a0She feels a bit miscast to me, but the song&#8217;s not bad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Flo Rida &#8211; &#8220;How I Feel&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6BMqNWTlNPQ?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">I don&#8217;t know how to break this to you, but Flo Rida has sampled Nina Simone&#8217;s &#8220;Feeling Good&#8221;. \u00a0I know. \u00a0Actually, by his standards it&#8217;s not too bad, but it&#8217;s still vying for the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>worst<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0thing in the top 10 with the next track below.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nina Simone had three top five hits in this country, though surprisingly <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/D5Y11hwjMNs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Feeling Good&#8221;<\/a> isn&#8217;t among them &#8211; it limped to number 40 on re-issue in 1994. \u00a0She got to number 5 with <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/eYSbUOoq4Vg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;My Baby Just Cares For Me&#8221;<\/a> on re-issue in 1987, and with <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/7jgHOcXTr50\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;To Love Somebody&#8221;<\/a> in 1969. \u00a0Her biggest hit was <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/L5jI9I03q8E\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Ain&#8217;t Got No, I Got Life&#8221;<\/a>, which got to number 2 in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>The video is basically an extended product placement for the Project Hollywood casino in Las Vegas. So that&#8217;s nice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u00a0Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull &#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;m a Freak&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YUiVIPgJA0o?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And this in the same week as a new Flo Rida single! \u00a0You&#8217;re really spoiling us, music industry. \u00a0This is Enrique&#8217;s first chart appearance since 2011. \u00a0He previously collaborated with Pitbull on &#8220;I Like It&#8221;, a number 4 hit in 2010. \u00a0It&#8217;s pretty wretched, this one, and from the look of iTunes, it won&#8217;t be sticking around in the top 10 for very long.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Dvbbs &amp; Borgeous featuring Tinie Tempah &#8211; &#8220;Tsunami (Jump)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y-VwSUfPJco?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It is a truth universally acknowledged that a perfectly good instrumental dance record that has been licensed for release by Ministry of Sound in the United Kingdom must be in want of a vocal line. \u00a0So here&#8217;s Tinie Tempah to top up the pension fund by rapping over a pre-existing record. \u00a0Dvbbs are a Canadian production duo &#8211; it&#8217;s pronounced &#8220;Dubbs&#8221;. \u00a0Borgeous is American producer John Borger. \u00a0Here&#8217;s what the record sounded like in other countries.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I41CX0RdmPQ?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Not a million miles from Martin Garrix&#8217;s &#8220;Animals&#8221;, actually, and Tinie has at least turned in something reasonably sympathetic to the track beneath him. \u00a0But vocal lines plonked on top of tracks that weren&#8217;t designed for them generally come across as clutter.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s number one on the strength of sales in the first few days &#8211; it didn&#8217;t even sustain its position to the weekend, so it won&#8217;t be there next week.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Take Off and Landing of Everything&#8221; by Elbow<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0Their seventh album, and their first number 1. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/cqnIbueM5fE\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;New York Morning&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A Perfect Contradiction&#8221; by Paloma Faith<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0The single <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/imi9Smkt_cI\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Can&#8217;t Rely on You&#8221;<\/a> is still hanging around at 33.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Love Letters&#8221; by Metronomy<\/strong> at 7. \u00a0Metronomy apparently started life as an electropop act, but they&#8217;ve deviated pretty dramatically from that by this point, <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/riEBi8BJ9Tw\" target=\"_blank\">as the sixties-pop title track illustrates<\/a>. \u00a0This is their fourth album, and highest chart place.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Timeless&#8221; by Dr Hook<\/strong> at 11. \u00a040-song back catalogue compilation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Lost Forever \/\/ Lost Together&#8221; by Architects<\/strong> at 16. \u00a0Metalcore. \u00a0It&#8217;s their sixth album, the first to chart. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/V_kjf2J7Als\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Broken Cross&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Rebel with a Cause&#8221; by Ghetts<\/strong> at 23. \u00a0Debut studio album for a rapper who&#8217;s been putting out singles for six years now. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Q-ljuxGLiZw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Rebel&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sweet Disarray&#8221; by Dan Croll<\/strong> at 26. \u00a0Another debut album. \u00a0He&#8217;s a songwriter who came up through the Liverpool Academy for the Performing Arts. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/973ibay5504\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;From Nowhere&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;No Strings Attached&#8221;
