line-height: 19px;\">37. \u00a0London Grammar &#8211; &#8220;Hey Now&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nMEHJPuggHQ?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This is the fifth single to be taken from their album &#8220;If You Wait&#8221;. \u00a0The first two made the top 40 last year &#8211; &#8220;Strong&#8221; and &#8220;Wasting My Young Years&#8221;. \u00a0The third and fourth didn&#8217;t, though the appearance of &#8220;Hey Now&#8221; is less a resurgence as a case of scraping in on a quiet week. \u00a0It&#8217;s a nice track, though it&#8217;s a good couple of minutes before it starts to sound like a natural choice of single.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20. \u00a0Trey Songz &#8211; &#8220;Na Na&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v0Gu_Yh_keE?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the lead single from his upcoming sixth album. \u00a0He finally started getting somewhere in the UK with the last album, which got him a couple of hits. \u00a0The chorus is ultimately recycled from <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/t34b3Mpkm5w\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Oooh La La La&#8221; by Teena Marie<\/a>, but it&#8217;s better known to UK audiences from cropping up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MPlb9HoOCxs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Fu-Gee-La&#8221; by the Fugees<\/a>, which made number 21 in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who read the wrestling posts, that&#8217;s the WWE&#8217;s Bella Twins at the 3:00 mark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19. \u00a0The Human League &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t You Want Me&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uPudE8nDog0?rel=0\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Oh yes. \u00a0The Human League still exist and still tour, but they haven&#8217;t been in the top 40 since 1996. \u00a0This track, the Christmas number 1 of 1981, remains their biggest hit, both in the UK and internationally. \u00a0As is the way of these things, the story goes that lead singer Phil Oakey opposed releasing it as a single, because it was the fourth single from the album. \u00a0And he hated the mix, which had been toned down by a producer appointed by the record label &#8211; it was all a bit pop for his avant-garde sensibilities.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s in the chart because Aberdeen fans use it as a terrace chant and they&#8217;re celebrating their Scottish League Cup win last weekend. \u00a0It was briefly in the iTunes top 5, in fact, but there&#8217;s only so many Aberdeen fans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. \u00a0Avicii &#8211; &#8220;Addicted to You&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Climbing ten places, to manage the unusual trick of being the highest climber two weeks running.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Example &#8211; &#8220;Kids Again&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0wyoKWgy3SE?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second single from Example&#8217;s upcoming fifth album and (most likely) the second to miss the top ten. \u00a0That change of record label doesn&#8217;t seem to be working out too brilliantly for him so far, but hey, maybe the album will fly off the virtual shelves. \u00a0I&#8217;m not sure Example&#8217;s voice has got the\u00a0<em>joie de vivre<\/em> to carry off this sort of song.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Little Mix &#8211; &#8220;Word Up&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1zk0ToEA8sY?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the charity single for this year&#8217;s Sport Relief fundraiser. \u00a0Sport Relief is a rather odd thing; it runs in alternate years with Comic Relief, but it&#8217;s sport themed\u2026 which in practice means a rather odd mixture of sport-themed stuff and comedy. \u00a0Oh, and Davina McCall drowning. \u00a0The video is a spot-the-celebrity affair for British viewers, though you have to wonder how many people will get references to\u00a0<em>The Brittas Empire<\/em>, which hasn&#8217;t been on air for 17 years.<\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth version of &#8220;Word Up&#8221; to chart. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/MZjAantupsA\" target=\"_blank\">The Cameo original<\/a> reached number 3 in 1986; a surprisingly passable\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/9VlSE4OpKDU\" target=\"_blank\">rock version by Gun<\/a> was their biggest hit, reaching number 8 in 1994 (you may have heard it on the soundtrack of <em>Barb Wire<\/em>); and Mel B from the Spice Girls (or Mel G, as she was calling herself that year before the divorce lawyers became involved) got to number 14 with it in 1999. \u00a0This was widely regarded as a bit of a catastrophe. \u00a0Mind you, the video &#8211; which could charitably be called extremely odd &#8211; probably didn&#8217;t do it any favours.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QZcNFYkl1eA?rel=0\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Duke Dumont featuring Jax Jones &#8211; &#8220;I Got U&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FHCYHldJi_g?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Scratch another name off the one hit wonders list, as Duke Dumont follows up last year&#8217;s number one &#8220;Need U (100%)&#8221; with another number one. \u00a0Considering he&#8217;s not a fan base artist (at least, not in quantities sufficient to get to number one), two singles and two number ones is a pretty good result.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s Thailand in the video &#8211; and it&#8217;s a bold scheduling move to release something as summery as this in March. \u00a0Singer Jax Jones&#8217; name doesn&#8217;t bring up anything aside from endless references to this song. \u00a0That pitch-shifted &#8220;clap your hands&#8221; vocal sample that crops up from time to time <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whosampled.com\/sample\/243432\/Duke-Dumont-Jax-Jones-I-Got-U-Whitney-Houston-My-Love-Is-Your-Love\/\" target=\"_blank\">actually comes from Whitney Houston&#8217;s &#8220;My Love Is Your Love&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m not sure it&#8217;s that great a song, but it&#8217;s got a lovely hook.<\/p>\n<p>Judging from iTunes, it has a reasonable shot of holding on for a second week.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart, a veritable clear out, with thirteen new entries.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Symphonica&#8221; by George Michael<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0His eighth album, and his seventh number 1. \u00a0(The odd one out is 1999&#8217;s &#8220;Songs from the Last Century&#8221;, which got to number 2.) \u00a0It&#8217;s a live album, mostly of covers. \u00a0The (barely promoted) single <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/58hMog3XuuY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Let Her Down Easy&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; originally a minor hit for Terence Trent d&#8217;Arby in 1993 &#8211; peaked at 53.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Kiss Me Once&#8221; by Kylie Minogue<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0Her second consecutive album to land at number 2, after &#8220;Abbey Road Sessions&#8221; in 2012. \u00a0This is her fourteenth top 10 album, the others including such imaginatively titled releases as 1988&#8217;s &#8220;Kylie! &#8211; The Album&#8221;, 1992&#8217;s &#8220;Kylie&#8217;s Greatest Hits&#8221;, 1994&#8217;s &#8220;Kylie Minogue&#8221;, 1998&#8217;s &#8220;Kylie Minogue&#8221; (yes, really &#8211; it&#8217;s the album that <em>was\u00a0<\/em>called &#8220;Impossible Princess&#8221; but was retitled after Princess Diana died), and 2004&#8217;s &#8220;Ultimate Kylie&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;In the Arms of an Angel&#8221; by Nicholas McDonald<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0When I saw this in the midweeks, with an artist I&#8217;d never heard of, dreadful cover art, and a title like &#8220;In the Arms of an Angel&#8221;, I honestly figured it must be one of those posthumous releases by an amateur singer who&#8217;d tragically died. \u00a0Turns out, though, that Nicholas McDonald is the bloke who came second in the\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> last year doing his bashed-out cash-in album, recorded in a week. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/UKDa6GE--KI\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Answerphone&#8221;.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Going To Hell&#8221; by The Pretty Reckless<\/strong> at 8. \u00a0Second album by the group who made &#8220;Make Me Wanna Die&#8221; three years ago. \u00a080s rock throwback single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rHBxJCq99jA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Heaven Knows&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Home&#8221; by Kian Egan<\/strong> at 9. \u00a0First solo album by the other other other one from Westlife. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/HyrFfO6AI6E\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Home&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(He&#8217;s in favour of it.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sex and Love&#8221; by Enrique Iglesias<\/strong> at 11. \u00a0His sixth album, and only the second to miss the top 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Recess&#8221; by Skrillex<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0His debut studio album. \u00a0I imagine we&#8217;ll be getting some properly promoted singles from this in due course. \u00a0Sample track: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/nOqUvLmwfTg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Try it Out&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">&#8220;Louder&#8221; by Lea Michele<\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\"> at 16. \u00a0Yes, from\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Glee<\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">. \u00a0The single <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/H-KhJmh074A\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Cannonball&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; which\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">has<\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\"> been actively promoted in this country &#8211; bombe<\/span><\/span>d out<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0at 54.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Lost in the Dream&#8221; by The War on Drugs<\/strong> at 18. \u00a0Indie band from Philadelphia. \u00a0They&#8217;re on their third album, but this is the first to make any significant headway in the UK; the previous album got to 127. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/1LmX5c7HoUw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Red Eyes&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Collection&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>by Belinda Carlisle<\/strong> at 24. \u00a0Greatest hits album. \u00a0Her biggest UK hit was, of course, the wonderful 1987 number 1 <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/P-WP6POdTgY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Heaven is a Place on Earth&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">&#8220;Oh What a Life&#8221; by American Authors<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> at 26. \u00a0This must have been heavily delayed, since the album is new, but <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Y66j_BUCBMY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Best Day of My Life&#8221;<\/a> came out a year ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">&#8220;The Art of Celebration&#8221; by Rend Collective<\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> at 28. \u00a0Basically a Christian worship version of Mumford &amp; Sons, though a surprisingly listenable one. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/JPtIv2lnkTY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;My Lighthouse&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">&#8220;Engelbert Calling&#8221; by Engelbert Humperdinck<\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\"> at 31. \u00a0A duets album. \u00a0This is Humperdinck&#8217;s 15th top 40 album in a chart career that goes back to 1967. \u00a0Admittedly, six of those were greatest hits albums&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you haven&#8217;t seen it already, cast your eyes one post down for the details of the special House to Astonish live episode, which will be taking place on 31 May!
