4 May 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s one of those weeks where there&#8217;s a single major new release and otherwise it&#8217;s pretty much dead from number 25 upwards. \u00a0But let&#8217;s go through it anyway&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>40. \u00a0Pharrell Williams &#8211; &#8220;Marilyn Monroe&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nXXVMcyy_Ag?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This is going to be the next single from &#8220;G I R L&#8221;, charting on the start of the advance publicity. \u00a0It&#8217;s not going to be another &#8220;Happy&#8221;, but it&#8217;s sure to go further than this. \u00a0And yes, that&#8217;s Kelly Osbourne doing the spoken break. \u00a0There&#8217;s a name I haven&#8217;t heard in a while.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Alicia Keys featuring Kendrick Lamar &#8211; &#8220;It&#8217;s On Again&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Okn0WpJqgHE?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>From the soundtrack of\u00a0<em>The Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/em>, and presumably selling to movie goers. \u00a0I&#8217;m\u2026 not convinced that Kendrick Lamar&#8217;s voice is a good match for what Alicia Keys does, certainly not in the intro.<\/p>\n<p>This is Keys&#8217; first UK hit since &#8220;Girl on Fire&#8221; made 5 in 2012, and unless it goes\u00a0a lot further, it will break a run of top ten hits going back to 2008. \u00a0Well, kind of &#8211; she released several more singles from the &#8220;Girl on Fire&#8221; album, but none of them even made the top 75. \u00a0Does that count as an unbroken run of top 10 hits, if your intervening singles don&#8217;t chart at all? \u00a0Hmm.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick Lamar gets his second chart credit, following his guest appearance on Robin Thicke&#8217;s &#8220;Give It 2 U&#8221; (the follow-up to &#8220;Blurred Lines&#8221; that everyone&#8217;s already forgotten about).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/7NIXlRBWevo\" target=\"_blank\">27. \u00a0Michael Jackson &#8211; &#8220;Love Never Felt So Good&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For artists\u00a0with\u00a0a lot of unreleased material in the drawer, death is not the end &#8211; it&#8217;s just the beginning of their Tupac phase. \u00a0This is the lead single from Jackson&#8217;s second posthumous album, &#8220;Xscape&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0a 1983 demo that&#8217;s been polished up here by Timbaland (who&#8217;s\u00a0filled\u00a0out the arrangement with some samples from Jackson&#8217;s 1979 album track &#8220;Workin&#8217; Day &amp; Night&#8221;). \u00a0Frankly, it&#8217;s not hard to see why\u00a0Jackson shelved it during his life;\u00a0his performance is fine, but the song itself is ordinary. \u00a0But he did co-write it, and it has previously seen the light of day in <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/hPyOCS0xccM\" target=\"_blank\">a version by\u00a0Johnny Mathis<\/a>, so Michael Jackson completists will be glad to hear the original.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Vjty080jy60\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>22. \u00a0Justin Timberlake &#8211; &#8220;Not a Bad Thing&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s highest climber, up 13 places. \u00a0Touchingly, Wikipedia still informs us that the lyrics &#8220;centre around the semantic field of love&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20. \u00a0Paloma Faith &#8211; &#8220;Only Love Can Hurt Like This&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PaKr9gWqwl4?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The follow-up to the top 10 hit &#8220;Can&#8217;t Rely On You&#8221; is a Diane Warren song, which is a bit of a change from Pharrell Williams. \u00a0It&#8217;s not exactly a Motown pastiche, but it&#8217;s certainly a track that wants you to keep firmly in mind where\u00a0it thinks its heritage lies. \u00a0And the song it&#8217;s just about strong enough to get away with it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Calvin Harris &#8211; &#8220;Summer&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ebXbLfLACGM?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Officially, this is the lead single from his upcoming fourth album &#8211; so apparently previous single &#8220;Under Control&#8221; has been quietly forgotten about. \u00a0You know what you&#8217;re getting with Calvin Harris &#8211; specifically the\u00a0same rhythm he uses for most of\u00a0his synth riffs &#8211; and this\u00a0doesn&#8217;t exactly deviate hugely from the formula. \u00a0Well, except that this is one of the increasingly rare tracks where he does his own vocals.<\/p>\n<p>This made it to number 1 on a\u00a0lead in the first half of the week &#8211; it&#8217;s not going to manage a second, and\u00a0since we&#8217;ve finally hit a week with no big new releases, there&#8217;s a distinct possibility of Mr Probz rebounding. \u00a0That would\u00a0at least break\u00a0the run of weekly\u00a0new number ones, though Mr Probz wouldn&#8217;t have been the artist I&#8217;d have guessed to do it.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Caustic Love&#8221; by Paolo Nutini<\/strong> is still number 1 after 3 weeks. \u00a0Who knew Paolo Nutini was so popular?<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Everyday Robots&#8221; by Damon Albarn<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0 None of the singles from this made the chart (the highest was &#8220;Heavy Seas of Love&#8221;, which got to 70).\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rjbiUj-FD-o\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s a video for the title track<\/a>. \u00a0Blur&#8217;s &#8220;Parklife&#8221; must have been marked down somewhere, since it re-enters at 24.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Tribal&#8221; by Imelda May<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0Irish rockabilly. \u00a0This is her second album to chart in the UK. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rq2YUEFELLc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;It&#8217;s Good To Be Alive&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Embrace&#8221; by Embrace<\/strong> at 5. \u00a0Their sixth album, coming eight years after the fifth. \u00a0They&#8217;re a bit less Coldplay these days. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/gVIa7WAmv0o\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Follow You Home&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Indie Cindy&#8221; by the Pixies<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0The first new studio album since &#8220;Trompe Le Monde&#8221; in 1991. \u00a0All the Pixies&#8217; albums have\u00a0gone top 10 in the UK, except for their debut &#8220;Surfer Rosa&#8221;. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/IAxqFo59TBs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Snakes&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0The Pixies are responsible for <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/nc0Mv4Iyxvc\" target=\"_blank\">one of the\u00a0worst music videos ever made, &#8220;Velouria&#8221;<\/a>, which consists of 23 seconds of footage the band running towards the camera, slowed down to the running time of the track. \u00a0(Supposedly it wasn&#8217;t even intended as a\u00a0subversive anti-video stunt,\u00a0it was just thrown together so that they could tell the BBC there was a video for their single.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Diploid Love&#8221; by Brody Dalle<\/strong> at 33. \u00a0Debut solo album by the former lead singer of the Distillers (though that was ten years ago and she&#8217;s been in a whole other band since then).
