{"id":2527,"date":"2014-05-11T23:06:37","date_gmt":"2014-05-11T22:06:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2527"},"modified":"2014-05-11T23:06:37","modified_gmt":"2014-05-11T22:06:37","slug":"charts-11-may-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2527","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 11 May 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At last, a near-total hiatus in the release schedule means a week\u00a0<em>without<\/em> a brand new number one! \u00a0Plus, the first of this year&#8217;s Eurovision hits &#8211; though we can guarantee seeing more next week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0Katy Perry &#8211; &#8220;Birthday&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CEUg7OplvIQ?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The song starts at 1:57, and I&#8217;m not altogether convinced this song really needed an eight minute video\u00a0in which Katy Perry attempts to upset children\u00a0by posing as inept party entertainers. \u00a0Supposedly the parties are genuine;\u00a0people were told they were being filmed for a reality TV show. \u00a0Of course, that makes it an exercise in deliberately upsetting children, which\u00a0I could live without.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34. \u00a0Jason Derulo featuring Snoop Dogg &#8211; &#8220;Wiggle&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fourth single from\u00a0Derulo&#8217;s album &#8220;Tattoos&#8221;. \u00a0There&#8217;s no video for this and it doesn&#8217;t seem to be (officially) on YouTube. \u00a0Snoop hasn&#8217;t been in the top 40 since 2011,\u00a0but apparently he is indeed still making records, and not just advertising car insurance. \u00a0(Because if\u00a0you were looking for car insurance, you&#8217;d trust Snoop Dogg&#8217;s endorsement, wouldn&#8217;t you? \u00a0He&#8217;s famed for his knowledge of\u00a0the UK insurance market, and sure to have done his research before taking the money.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0Molly &#8211; &#8220;Children of the Universe&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SCnBZwm4wqQ?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the UK&#8217;s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest,\u00a0which took place on Saturday. \u00a0It&#8217;s the\u00a0first solo\u00a0chart credit for Molly Smitten-Downes, but she\u00a0was\u00a0also\u00a0the vocalist for Stunt,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/nhs2dxZorfw\" target=\"_blank\">who had a top 10 hit in 2008 with a mash-up of their track &#8220;Raindrops&#8221; and Sash&#8217;s &#8220;Encore Une Fois&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For once, there was actually some hope that this might do respectably, and it is indeed a rather better effort than we&#8217;ve made in a while. \u00a0It&#8217;s a stock Eurovision we-are-all-one chorus, married to some trappings lifted from Florence Welch. \u00a0But it came 17th out of 26th,\u00a0because\u00a0while it wasn&#8217;t awful, it still got lost in the shuffle alongside some much more instantly\u00a0memorable performances.<\/p>\n<p>Since most UK viewers only\u00a0hear the Eurovision songs on the\u00a0night of the contest itself, and the weekly chart window closes at midnight that night, the downloads of contest songs will\u00a0hit next week&#8217;s chart. \u00a0For once, it seems there could be quite a few of them. \u00a0At time of writing, the iTunes top 40\u00a0has the\u00a0Dutch and Austrian songs (which came first and second) selling in quantities that are\u00a0almost sure to place them in the top 40 on Sunday, with the Dutch looking set to make the top 10. \u00a0The Swedish and Danish entries are also in realistic chart contention. \u00a0But we&#8217;ll get to them next week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/ENrj5u_lrWw\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>22. \u00a0Gary Barlow &#8211; &#8220;Let Me Go&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Originally a number 2 hit in November, this appears to have re-entered on the back of a TV special. \u00a0A number of other Barlow tracks are floating around in the lower reaches of the top 75, presumably for the same reason. \u00a0His album &#8220;Since I Saw You Last&#8221; rebounds from 38 to 2, and Take That&#8217;s &#8220;Ultimate Collection&#8221; greatest hits album re-enters at 21. \u00a0All in all, a productive\u00a0hour&#8217;s TV for\u00a0Gary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. \u00a0Foxes &#8211; &#8220;Holding Onto Heaven&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qklYTlTSeJc?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Her third solo hit, just missing the top 10. \u00a0Still, that&#8217;s three top 20 hits from the as yet unreleased album, which isn&#8217;t\u00a0bad at all for an act who&#8217;s being positioned as a songwriter more than a pop star. \u00a0This one&#8217;s got a hint of\u00a0Florence Welch too,\u00a0come to think of it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/PaKr9gWqwl4\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>7. \u00a0Paloma Faith &#8211; &#8220;Only Love Can\u00a0Hurt Us&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s highest climber, up 13 places. \u00a0It&#8217;s her third top ten hit,\u00a0equalling the peak of her 2012 single &#8220;Picking up the Pieces&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Pitbull featuring G.R.L. &#8211; &#8220;Wild Wild Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EAyzpLGBI1E?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That\u2026 is not how I would launch a new girl group. \u00a0Playing second fiddle to Pitbull? \u00a0And in the <i>Playboy Mansion<\/i>? \u00a0Does\u00a0<em>anyone\u00a0<\/em>still think Playboy is a fashionable brand? \u00a0Then again, this bunch started life as a recruitment drive to fill vacancies in the Pussycat Dolls, so you get what you sign up for, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s\u00a0one of Pitbull&#8217;s\u00a0less annoying, and less memorable, singles. \u00a0It understandably fails to make a huge impact on the chart even in a week with no competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/pUjE9H8QlA4\" target=\"_blank\">1. \u00a0Mr Probz &#8211; &#8220;Waves&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Returning to number one after a one week interruption. \u00a0This ends a run of new entries at number 1 which stretches back to March, though we haven&#8217;t had a record spend two\u00a0<em>consecutive<\/em> weeks at number 1 since Clean Bandit in February. \u00a0It won&#8217;t be happening next week, either, since Rita Ora&#8217;s new single\u00a0has been building up pre-orders for a while.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart, a busier week.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sheezus&#8221; by Lily Allen<\/strong> at number 1. \u00a0The singles haven&#8217;t done well &#8211; &#8220;Hard Out Here&#8221; and &#8220;Air Balloon&#8221; both made the lower end of the top 10 before swan diving, and <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/pfACIxjsuu0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Our Time&#8221;<\/a> didn&#8217;t even make the top 40. \u00a0But given the state of the albums market, it would still have been a major shock if her third album hadn&#8217;t topped the chart in a week with no real competition in terms of major mainstream releases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Magic Stone Mountain&#8221; by Black Stone Cherry<\/strong> at 5.
