{"id":2596,"date":"2014-07-03T22:13:15","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T21:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2596"},"modified":"2014-07-05T17:06:38","modified_gmt":"2014-07-05T16:06:38","slug":"charts-29-june-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2596","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 29 June 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, back to business as usual &#8211; ish. \u00a0This is genuinely the end of an era &#8211; the very last chart\u00a0to be based purely on sales,\u00a0after 62 years. \u00a0The impact of streaming data is likely to be fairly limited in the short term given the weighting (as to which, see last week&#8217;s post), and the midweeks tend to confirm that. \u00a0But the symbolism is important.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34. \u00a0Austin Mahone featuring Pitbull &#8211; &#8220;Mmm Yeah&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MMAppa1cAVo?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<!--more-->Austin Mahone is basically the American equivalent of Elyar Fox &#8211; a teenager who was found on YouTube and is now being pushed as a teen idol. \u00a0The video is evidently working on the assumption that the target audience is\u00a0<em>way\u00a0<\/em>too young to have seen the gimmick in Jamiroquai&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/4JkIs37a2JE\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Virtual Insanity&#8221;<\/a> video (which did it better). \u00a0Pitbull is there to collect his pay cheque and\u00a0give it some name value.<\/p>\n<p>It was at 25 in the midweeks, so it&#8217;s pretty clearly a case\u00a0front loaded sales that flared out quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Dimitri Vegas, Martin Garrix &amp; Like Mike &#8211; &#8220;Tremor&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9vMh9f41pqE?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another of the Benelux\u00a0rave collaborations that make the charts periodically. \u00a0The familiar name here is Martin Garrix, who had a number 1 last year with &#8220;Animals&#8221;, and followed\u00a0that up with the rather similar top ten hit &#8220;Wizard&#8221;. \u00a0Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike are\u00a0brothers from Belgium; they&#8217;ve had a fair amount of success at home, including <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/MWshlyFLPCA\" target=\"_blank\">an improbable collaboration with Katy B<\/a>. \u00a0(Weirdly, Wikipedia suggests Belgium is the only other country where Katy B has hits. \u00a0Why Belgium? \u00a0Why does her appeal stop at the Dutch border\u2026?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Thinking Out Loud&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/YYc9NPiVw7c\" target=\"_blank\">19. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rp1DJL_SIys?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With the release of his album,\u00a0Ed Sheeran&#8217;s &#8220;Sing&#8221; and &#8220;One&#8221; are joined by two\u00a0more tracks being cherry picked. \u00a0There was a third in the midweeks. \u00a0This isn&#8217;t all that common; normally, if you&#8217;re enough of a fan to be interested in the album tracks, you&#8217;re enough of a fan to just\u00a0buy the whole album. \u00a0We see it occasionally with the likes of One Direction, or with album tracks featuring high profile guest stars who have their own fan base. \u00a0&#8220;Don&#8217;t&#8221; has some\u00a0justification for being\u00a0selected, since it&#8217;s being used in a Beats By Dre commercial (plus it&#8217;s the vaguely gossipy one supposedly about his break-up with a Famous Person). \u00a0And &#8220;Thinking Out Loud&#8221; was performed on the BBC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. \u00a0Usher &#8211; &#8220;Good Kisser&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1lQtoRFaLsA?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Usher is one of those guys I complete forget exists\u00a0between releases. \u00a0He generally leaves me cold, but the minimalism of this one appeals to me. \u00a0This came out in the rest of the world a month ago, but the UK labels still have a fetish for promoting everything for weeks before releasing it. \u00a0Thus far, to be fair, the evidence does not suggest that this is causing them to lose all that many sales to piracy.<\/p>\n<p>Usher is now in the 18th year of his chart career, and if we disregard a guest appearance on a flop Ludacris single, it&#8217;s his fourth straight top ten hit. \u00a0Number 5 in the midweeks, though, so again it must have tailed off\u00a0as the week went on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u00a0Example &#8211; &#8220;One More Day (Stay With Me)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E-bYftKKIQA?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and here&#8217;s another easily forgettable artist. \u00a0My\u00a0problem with Example, I think, is that he obviously aspires to do something more than production line pop, but\u00a0he&#8217;s not ending up with anything that&#8217;s actually much of an improvement. \u00a0Still, if it is indeed number 4 on Sunday, it&#8217;ll be his biggest hit since &#8220;Say Nothing&#8221;, which got to number 2 in 2012;\u00a0the stumble that followed his change of record labels may finally have been overcome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Oliver Heldens &amp; Becky Hill &#8211; &#8220;Gecko (Overdrive)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kcZMCMI24gs?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A random word with a completely unrelated random word in brackets?
