{"id":2614,"date":"2014-07-07T23:14:16","date_gmt":"2014-07-07T22:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2614"},"modified":"2014-07-07T23:14:16","modified_gmt":"2014-07-07T22:14:16","slug":"charts-6-july-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2614","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 6 July 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the brave new technological frontier &#8211; the\u00a0first chart of the streaming era! \u00a0And what changes do we see? \u00a0Um, not very much. \u00a0Because\u00a0the\u00a0chart is still heavily weighted towards sales, you&#8217;re not going to see\u00a0things charting on streaming alone &#8211; and besides, the streaming chart\u00a0lags behind the sales chart anyway. \u00a0Frankly, the only noticeable\u00a0impact\u00a0this week is that some older tracks still hanging around the streaming chart (like &#8220;Rather Be&#8221;) rebound. \u00a0But hey, let&#8217;s see what else we have.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0The Vamps &#8211; &#8220;Somebody to You&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0go2nfVXFgA?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Another product of the Swedish songwriting factories, which wouldn&#8217;t have been out of place on a Taylor Swift album. \u00a0This is charting as an album track, but it&#8217;ll vault into the top 10 next week thanks to the release of the single version (at which point it will sprout a &#8220;featuring Demi Lovato&#8221; credit). \u00a0Currently, it spoils the boy band&#8217;s clean record\u00a0of top 10 hits. \u00a0That\u00a0won&#8217;t last.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32. \u00a0Milky Chance &#8211; &#8220;Stolen Dance&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iX-QaNzd-0Y?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Milky Chance are a German folktronica duo &#8211; well, you&#8217;d have to speak English as a second language to think &#8220;Milky Chance&#8221; was in any way a good band name, wouldn&#8217;t you? \u00a0Native speakers wishing to enjoy the pleasant-enough riff must also wrestle with earnest\u00a0lyrics like &#8220;Coldest winter for me \/ No sun is shining anymore \/ The only thing I feel is pain \/ Caused by absence of you&#8221;. \u00a0(To say nothing of &#8220;Do the boogie all night long&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>This track has been doing the rounds on YouTube for a year now,\u00a0and typically enough,\u00a0finally gets its UK release\u00a0long after it was a hit internationally. \u00a0Normally that implies a long period of pre-release hype, with the track reaching its highest place in week one, but since this is climbing the iTunes chart,\u00a0it seems Britain is just taking a little longer to catch on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X2BYmmTI04I\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>23. \u00a05 Seconds of Summer &#8211; &#8220;She Looks So Perfect&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You may remember this from the tail end of March, when it spent a week at number 1. \u00a0It rebounds 14 places this week, but that has nothing to do with the\u00a0streaming data (it&#8217;s at 32 over on the streaming chart). \u00a0It\u00a0seems that promotion for the release of the parent album &#8211; which enters at number 1 &#8211; has simply\u00a0reminded some people that they wanted it, even though another two singles have come and gone since then.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. \u00a0DJ Fresh vs TC &#8211; &#8220;Make U Bounce&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-DlUfVZXLw0?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>DJ Fresh at his most Calvin Harris. \u00a0Well, up to the chorus, at least. \u00a0As with the previous single, the co-credit actually reflects the fact that this is a re-working of somebody else&#8217;s track &#8211; in this case, an unreleased drum and bass track of the same name. \u00a0The uncredited\u00a0singer is Little Nikki, who&#8217;s had a few singles fail to reach the top 40, and was also a member of a\u00a0failed girl group called SoundGirl.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Sia &#8211; &#8220;Chandelier&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2vjPBrBU-TM?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t seen the video, watch it. \u00a0I&#8217;ll wait.<\/p>\n<p>Okay. \u00a0So, Sia Furler. \u00a0She\u00a0cropped up\u00a0as a guest singer on three\u00a0singles\u00a0during 2011-2012, the\u00a0best known being David Guetta&#8217;s number 1 &#8220;Titanium&#8221;. \u00a0(The others were Guetta&#8217;s &#8220;She-Wolf&#8221; and Flo Rida&#8217;s &#8220;Wild Ones&#8221;.) But this is her first hit in her own right since way back in 2000, when she got to number 10 with <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/0LCkM-Lu9Jk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Taken for Granted&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0Her performing career never really took off after that, and\u00a0although she&#8217;s made five albums, she&#8217;s had most success as a songwriter for the A-list stars. \u00a0And then &#8220;Titanium&#8221; came out and reminded everyone about her. \u00a0Which in turn means\u00a0her upcoming sixth album is actually getting some promotion.<\/p>\n<p>The promotional angle for this album is anonymity. \u00a0Sia&#8217;s face is being kept out of all promotional material, and the idea is that she&#8217;ll be represented instead by other people wearing Sia wigs. \u00a0Hence, in this video, mini-Sia &#8211; 11-year-old Maddie Ziegler, previously best known from the reality show\u00a0<em>Dance Moms<\/em>, but whose career has just been given a rocket launch by this video. \u00a0She&#8217;s\u00a0spectacularly good.<\/p>\n<p>The official line is that Sia just doesn&#8217;t like being famous. \u00a0No doubt\u00a0that&#8217;s true to a large extent, and it&#8217;s also the case that she stopped touring years ago, citing health reasons. \u00a0But there&#8217;s no secret about what she looks like, and it&#8217;s not like she&#8217;s obscuring her face\u00a0in public. \u00a0(And she\u00a0does still do conventional performances for charity shows.) \u00a0So the &#8220;faceless&#8221; angle is clearly\u00a0more than that; it seems to be verging on\u00a0a dadaist subversion of the whole idea of promotional appearances.\u00a0\u00a0Hence\u00a0an appearance on the\u00a0Ellen deGeneres show where\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/ILTZ8qZbNK0\" target=\"_blank\">Maddie performed the dance routine while Sia stood in the corner with her back to the camera<\/a>, and another on\u00a0<em>Late Night With Seth Meyers<\/em> got <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Sj757ishXnQ\" target=\"_blank\">Lena Dunham dancing in a Sia wig while the actual Sia lay face down on a bunk bed<\/a>. \u00a0This is singularly\u00a0bizarre, and\u00a0thus\u00a0infinitely more memorable than any conventional performance was ever likely to be &#8211; as well as sending the tacit message that Sia\u00a0as artist in her own right is not just a jobbing songwriter who knocks out hits for David Guetta.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea &#8211; &#8220;Problem&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iS1g8G_njx8?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Back to the weekly turnover of number 1 hits, then. \u00a0Grande was in the Nickelodeon shows\u00a0<em>Victorious<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Sam &amp; Cat<\/em>;\u00a0but we know she isn&#8217;t number one on the strength of a fan base from those shows, since\u00a0this is\u00a0the lead single from her second album. \u00a0The first album was released in this country, but none of the singles made the top\u00a040. \u00a0So\u00a0as far as the average UK buyer is concerned, she&#8217;s new to them. \u00a0Iggy Azalea&#8217;s name probably\u00a0helps a bit &#8211; each of her singles has done better than the last,\u00a0peaking at 17,\u00a013, 10, 5, and now 1.<\/p>\n<p>But mostly, it&#8217;s\u00a0simply that &#8220;Problem&#8221; is a high-end Max Martin production job. \u00a0Not that the format is exactly groundbreaking here &#8211; distorted brass riff, vocal hook\u00a0based on repeating a single phrase\u2026 \u00a0Okay, they&#8217;ve\u00a0jazzed up the verses a bit, but it\u00a0<em>is<\/em> basically the Jason Derulo formula\u00a0that\u00a0Brett Domino helpfully explicates\u00a0here:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JV2s0UIPOQY?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(By an odd coincidence,\u00a0he also has <a href=\"&lt;iframe%20width=&quot;400&quot; height=&quot;225&quot; src=&quot;\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JV2s0UIPOQY?rel=0&quot; frameborder=&quot;0&quot; allowfullscreen&gt;&lt;\/iframe&gt;\" target=\"_blank\">a follow-up video explaining\u00a0how to make an Iggy Azalea record<\/a>\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>Over on the album chart!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;X&#8221; by Ed Sheeran<\/strong> remains at number 1 for a second week.<\/li>\n<li><b>&#8220;5 Seconds of Summer&#8221; by 5 Seconds of Summer<\/b>\u00a0at 2. \u00a0We&#8217;ve mentioned the single.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Wanted on Voyage&#8221; by George Ezra<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0The single &#8220;Budapest&#8221; climbs to 3 this week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Mutineers&#8221; by David Gray<\/strong> at 10. \u00a0I saw this guy when he was a support act for the Auteurs. \u00a0Now there was a mismatch. \u00a0He hasn&#8217;t been on the singles chart in\u00a0seven years but his albums still do decently. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/mBS6UgiYTr4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Back in the World&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Revival&#8221; by Bellowhead<\/strong> at 12. \u00a0A folk band specialising in slightly eccentric arrangements of\u00a0things like sea shanties. \u00a0Their fifth\u00a0album, and the\u00a0highest place to date. \u00a0No videos for this, <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/jh0ZGtoClYc\" target=\"_blank\">but there&#8217;s a general album teaser<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;You Raise Me Up&#8221; by John Barrowman <\/strong>at 16. \u00a0That&#8217;s a lot of ironic purchases from\u00a0<em>Doctor Who<\/em> fans. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/PYvnBEvtXuA\" target=\"_blank\">Album teaser video here.<\/a>\u00a0 Experience snippets of John Barrowman singing &#8220;Take The High Road&#8221;!<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Trigga&#8221; by Trey Songz<\/strong> at 17. \u00a0The single &#8220;Na Na&#8221; got to number 20 in March.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Monty Python Sings (Again)&#8221; by Monty Python&#8217;s Flying Circus<\/strong>\u00a0at 35 &#8211; a remastered version (hence &#8220;Again&#8221;),\u00a0promoting the reunion shows. \u00a0This compilation\u00a0thus makes its first appearance in the top 40, though they&#8217;ve had four previous charting albums (the highest, surprisingly, was &#8220;Monty Python&#8217;s Contractual Obligation Album&#8221;), and &#8220;Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life&#8221;
