{"id":2643,"date":"2014-07-14T23:04:30","date_gmt":"2014-07-14T22:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2643"},"modified":"2014-07-14T23:04:30","modified_gmt":"2014-07-14T22:04:30","slug":"charts-13-july-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2643","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 13 July 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the second week to\u00a0factor streaming into the chart, and the muted start for the new format continues, with one of the dullest charts of the year. \u00a0Don&#8217;t say I didn&#8217;t warn you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0Matrix &amp; Futurebound featuring Tanya Lacey &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Look Back&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/usaHkd31cuM?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth top 40 appearance for Matrix &amp; Futurebound; the last one, &#8220;Control&#8221;, made the top 10, but we seem to be back on form here. \u00a0It&#8217;s hovering around the\u00a0bottom end of the iTunes top 40 as I write, but doesn&#8217;t seem to be on course for any major progress. \u00a0Which is odd, since it&#8217;s a perfectly radio friendly dance track that you might have expected to get a bit more support than this.<\/p>\n<p>Singer Tanya Lacey has charted before &#8211; she was also on <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/LA1lXhVf_Do\" target=\"_blank\">Loick Essien&#8217;s &#8220;How We Roll&#8221;<\/a>, which apparently made number 2 in 2011, but doesn&#8217;t even ring a bell now. \u00a0Oh, and she\u00a0has a co-writing credit on will.i.am&#8217;s &#8220;T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>24. \u00a0MKTO &#8211; &#8220;Classic&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4Ba_qTPA4Ds?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>More Nickelodeon escapees. \u00a0Actually, these guys escaped their Nickelodeon show (<em>Gigantic<\/em>) a while back; Malcolm\u00a0Kelly was the kid in the first two series of\u00a0<em>Lost<\/em>. \u00a0The song has done okay in mainland Europe and Australia,\u00a0but it&#8217;s a weirdly dated thing that doesn&#8217;t feel like a natural fit for the UK charts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Jess Glynne &#8211; &#8220;Right Here&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SSrCaX8ttuw?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jess Glynne has already\u00a0appeared as the guest singer on two\u00a0number one hits this year &#8211; Clean Bandit&#8217;s &#8220;Rather Be&#8221;, and Route 94&#8217;s &#8220;My Love&#8221;. \u00a0Keeping to the now familiar pattern, she now releases a single of her own. \u00a0And does slightly less well than I&#8217;d have expected. \u00a0It&#8217;s another of this year&#8217;s deep house revivals, though Glynne seems to have gone one step further and copied the production values of a late-80s dance music video to boot. \u00a0This really does look as though it belongs on the ITV Chart Show,\u00a0and not entirely in a good way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0go2nfVXFgA\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>4. \u00a0The Vamps &#8211; &#8220;Somebody To You&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jumping\u00a0from last week&#8217;s number 39 with the release of the\u00a0version that has Demi Lovato on it. \u00a0Either Demi Lovato has some really completist fans, or the Vamps do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0will.i.am &amp; Cody Wise &#8211; &#8220;It&#8217;s My Birthday&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JuM7hObGjWI?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, the good news is that a quick glance at the iTunes chart shows this is going to be another one-week stay &#8211; though\u00a0when you see what it&#8217;s up against, you might\u00a0reassess it.<\/p>\n<p>This appears to be basically an exercise in launching the career of will.i.am&#8217;s signing Cody Wise. \u00a0Cody Wise&#8217;s Wikipedia entry largely informs me that he has made a record with will.i.am. \u00a0Also, he was in the Broadway production of\u00a0<em>The Lion King<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The most interesting thing\u00a0about this track is\u00a0the source material. \u00a0It&#8217;s technically a cover, but\u00a0of something\u00a0way off the beaten track for the singles chart.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DXCV5cKNHho?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0is\u00a0&#8220;Urvasi Urvasi&#8221;, from the\u00a01994 film <em>Kadhalan<\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s by AR Rahman, one of the most successful composers in Indian cinema,\u00a0previously best known\u00a0in the UK chart for &#8220;Jai Ho&#8221;,\u00a0one of his contributions to the soundtrack of\u00a0<em>Slumdog Millionaire<\/em>. \u00a0<em>Kadhalan<\/em> is the film where he made his name &#8211; though more\u00a0for a song called &#8220;Muqabla&#8221;, which was a massive hit in India. \u00a0Despite being made in 1994, &#8220;Urvasi Urvasi&#8221; sounds like\u00a0an Indian take on minimalist early eighties electropop. \u00a0And it&#8217;s fantastic. \u00a0Will.i.am has, of course, ruined it entirely.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart (in addition to some\u00a0fairly random mid-table archive re-entries, which are mostly by people who happen to be touring right now, but more surprisingly\u00a0include the Sex Pistols at 24):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;X&#8221; by Ed Sheeran<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0at number 1 for the third week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Futurology&#8221; by the Manic Street Preachers<\/strong> enters at 2. \u00a0The\u00a0group have remarkably bad luck in timing their releases;\u00a0this is their fourth number 2 album. \u00a0Only &#8220;This is My Truth Tell Me Yours&#8221; got to number 1. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/nusymqINrSc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Walk Me To The Bridge&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Live Life Living&#8221; by Example<\/strong> at 8. \u00a0Current single &#8220;One More Day&#8221; is hanging on in the top 20.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;1000 Forms of Fear&#8221; by Sia<\/strong> at 11. \u00a0&#8220;Chandelier&#8221;\u00a0is still in the top 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Homecoming&#8221; by Nicola Benedetti<\/strong> at 19. \u00a0Scottish classical violinist who won BBC Young Musician of the Year back in 2004. \u00a0Her previous album &#8220;The Silver Violin&#8221; got to 32.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The\u00a0Morning&#8221; by Lewis Watson<\/strong> at 28. \u00a0Singer-songwriter, debut album. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/nusymqINrSc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Holding On&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sadnecessary&#8221;
