31 August 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another quiet week for new releases, while the turnover of number 1 singles\u00a0continues with another\u00a0hitherto obscure act. \u00a0But first&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0Katy Perry &#8211; &#8220;This Is How We Do&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7RMQksXpQSk?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Bit plodding, isn&#8217;t it? \u00a0It&#8217;s the fifth single from last year&#8217;s &#8220;Prism&#8221; album, so it&#8217;s not really\u00a0expected to sell so much as to remind people that the album is still available. \u00a0iTunes shows it climbing a bit, but hardly racing up the charts;\u00a0it&#8217;s presently on course to be her third straight single to miss the top 20.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20. \u00a0Ariana Grande &#8211; &#8220;Break Free&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L8eRzOYhLuw?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The follow-up to Grande&#8217;s number 1 hit &#8220;Problem&#8221; has been floating around the iTunes chart for a while, but as the second\u00a0instant gratification track from her\u00a0album &#8220;My Everything&#8221;,\u00a0it was ineligible for the chart until the album came out this week. \u00a0It would probably have registered higher a couple of weeks ago, but this is still enough to strike\u00a0her name off the one-hit wonder list. \u00a0It&#8217;s produced by Zedd, who had a number 2 hit\u00a0in his own right with\u00a0&#8220;Stay the Night&#8221; earlier this\u00a0year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0Lethal Bizzle featuring JME and Tempa T &#8211; &#8220;Rari WorkOut&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7mcGJA7-HeM?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lethal Bizzle feels strongly\u00a0that we should all spend more time in the gym, and also drive nicer cars. \u00a0This is pretty good, actually. \u00a0&#8220;Rari&#8221; is short for Ferrari, but the video budget doesn&#8217;t really run to trying to\u00a0convince us about\u00a0Lethal Bizzle&#8217;s celebrity lifestyle, so instead we get a video which has quite transparently\u00a0blown 90% of the modest budget on hiring a Ferrari for the day. \u00a0Which is kind of awesome. \u00a0If you can&#8217;t be convincing, you can at least be ostentatiously unconvincing.<\/p>\n<p>This is Lethal Bizzle&#8217;s joint biggest hit, finally matching\u00a0the number 11 peak of his debut &#8220;Pow!&#8221; from 2005. \u00a0It&#8217;s JME&#8217;s fourth chart appearance, all of which have been\u00a0with guest verses on other UK rap tracks. \u00a0Tempa T makes his chart debut, though he was\u00a0on Chase &amp; Status&#8217; 2011\u00a0single &#8220;Hypest Hype&#8221;, which missed the top 40.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Sam Smith &#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;m Not The Only One&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>7. \u00a0Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora &#8211; &#8220;Black Widow&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both climbing 8 places, giving Smith the odd distinction of being the highest climber two\u00a0weeks running.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Maroon 5 &#8211; &#8220;Maps&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NmugSMBh_iI?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Basically what you&#8217;d get if you nailed the verses of a Police song onto a chorus by Ryan Tedder. \u00a0Maroon 5 are one of those bands whom it&#8217;s\u00a0hard to imagine being anyone&#8217;s favourite, even\u00a0within the audience for their genre &#8211; but this is their\u00a0sixth top 5 hit over a 10 year period, so they&#8217;re clearly\u00a0doing something right, even if it leaves me cold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Lilly Wood &amp; Robin Schulz &#8211; &#8220;Prayer in C&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IcoqJCJlHbQ?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lilly Wood isn&#8217;t a person, but a French\u00a0alt-folk duo consisting of singer Nili Hadida and guitarist Benjamin Cotto. \u00a0They&#8217;re regularly credited as Lilly Wood &amp; The Prick, in fact, but the UK release does indeed seem to be under the less interesting name which I have grudgingly used above.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve had modest success in their home country (which is to say, their previous album made the top 20), but &#8220;Prayer in C&#8221; is another of those tracks to have become a number 1 hit across western Europe\u00a0after receiving\u00a0the tender\u00a0attentions of a remixer. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the original; it&#8217;s a track from their 2010 album &#8220;Invincible Friends&#8221;, and no-one&#8217;s idea of\u00a0an obvious\u00a0chart-topper.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3NAbE-kZ8sk?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Robin Schulz has\u00a0basically sped it up and whacked some drums on it, but he has actually left the song intact. \u00a0Since the UK release is specifically of the\u00a0remix, and Schulz gets co-credit on the chart. \u00a0Technically, this is his debut UK hit; in practice, it&#8217;s his second number 1 of the year, because he was also responsible for the version of &#8220;Waves&#8221; by Mr Probz that made number 1. \u00a0Which he also sped up and whacked some drums on. \u00a0He&#8217;s arguably better at spotting\u00a0overlooked pop potential in obscure records\u00a0than he is at actually remixing them.<\/p>\n<p>Over on the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Royal Blood&#8221; by Royal Blood<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0A White Stripes-style rock duo. \u00a0Their last single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jhgVu2lsi_k\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Figure It Out&#8221;<\/a> peaked at 50.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;My Everything&#8221; by Ariana Grande<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0The former number 1 &#8220;Problem&#8221; is still hanging in the top 20, and as noted, &#8220;Break Free&#8221; joins it this week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Whole Story&#8221; by Kate Bush<\/strong> climbs to 9, with\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Hounds of Love&#8221;<\/strong> at 9,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;50 Words For Snow&#8221;<\/strong> at 20,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;The Kick Inside&#8221;<\/strong> at 24,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;The Sensual World&#8221;<\/strong> at 26,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;The Dreaming&#8221;<\/strong> at 37,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Never For Ever&#8221;<\/strong> at 38 and\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Lionheart&#8221;<\/strong> at 40, as publicity for her comeback shows apparently reminds an awful lot of people that they really want to own some more Kate Bush albums.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Pale\u00a0Communion&#8221; by Opeth<\/strong> at 14. \u00a0Swedish prog metal band. \u00a0This is their 11th studio album, and the third to chart (with the highest position). \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/JHq9yMXw3iA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Cusp of Eternity&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(I did say they were a prog metal band.)<\/li>\n<li><b>&#8220;Junto&#8221; by Basement Jaxx<\/b> at 30. \u00a0People seem to have stopped caring about Basement Jaxx with their 2009 albums &#8220;Scars&#8221; and &#8220;Zephyr&#8221;, neither of which could get any higher than 37. \u00a0This is their first album since then, and marks only a marginal improvement. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/U0eS3zC3Jco\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Never Say Never&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Alarms in the Heart&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><strong>by Dry the River<\/strong> at 31. \u00a0A folk-rock band. \u00a0This is the follow-up to the 2012 album &#8220;Shallow Bed&#8221;, which got to 28. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/OdyudQwQEKE\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Gethsemane&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Moonshine in the Trunk&#8221; by Brad Paisley<\/strong> at 34. \u00a0One of those odd quirks of declining album sales: a UK chart debut (just) for a US country singer on his 10th album. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/8D5XTXSbrms\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;River Bank&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0The waterskiing squirrel is apparently a professional, so fear not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Waking the Fallen&#8221; by Avenged Sevenfold<\/strong> at 35. \u00a0This is\u00a0a\u00a0reissue of\u00a0Avenged Sevenfold&#8217;s second studio album, which didn&#8217;t chart on original release, and is now joined by the obligatory\u00a0clutch\u00a0of demos and live tracks on a second disc. \u00a0It was meant to be the tenth anniversary reissue, but they didn&#8217;t get it out in time, so now it&#8217;s the eleventh anniversary reissue instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another quiet week for new releases, while the turnover of number 1 singles\u00a0continues with another\u00a0hitherto obscure act. \u00a0But first&#8230;
