28 September 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s another very quiet week for new releases. \u00a0But we do have a genuine moment of chart history that will live on pub\u00a0quizzes for years to come. \u00a0And here it is now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0Meghan Trainor &#8211; &#8220;All About That Bass&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7PCkvCPvDXk?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->What&#8217;s so important about\u00a0a Meghan Trainor single entering at 33? \u00a0Simple &#8211; it only came out yesterday. \u00a0Which is\u00a0outside the chart window. \u00a0There&#8217;s been extended promotion for this one, it&#8217;s going to be a massive hit, and it will leapfrog\u00a0to number 1 on\u00a0Sunday. \u00a0(Which is not a record, before you ask.)<\/p>\n<p>No, the important thing is that this record was released to streaming services several weeks before it went on sale. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0currently at number 4 on the streaming charts, and thanks to the recent change in chart rules, that\u00a0counts towards its chart position.<\/p>\n<p>Which makes this the very first record to reach the top 40 on streaming data alone, with sales of zero.<\/p>\n<p>The record, then. \u00a0It is, obviously, a vaguely\u00a0doo\u00a0wop thing about body confidence. \u00a0It&#8217;s already been number one in the US and it&#8217;s done well across Europe. \u00a0Meghan Trainor is a\u00a0songwriter who&#8217;s previously written for various Nashville acts, though she&#8217;s actually from Massachusetts. \u00a0This is her debut major label release, but\u00a0she self-released a couple of albums in 2011. \u00a0You can find them on YouTube if you really want; from a quick skim, they&#8217;re pretty much\u00a0major label songwriter demos, so you can see how she got into that.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0aren&#8217;t finished with this song. \u00a0But first&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0Shift K3Y &#8211; &#8220;I Know&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h-nnAeByB1A?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The follow-up to &#8220;Touch&#8221;, which made number 3 in April. \u00a0As before, Shift K3y is an unusual case of a producer who does his own vocals, so\u00a0for once there&#8217;s a reason for the track having no featured artist credit. \u00a0The video is\u2026 vaguely creepy, if you ask me, and I&#8217;m pretty sure that isn&#8217;t what they were going for. \u00a0It was 13 in the midweeks, so it&#8217;ll be gone\u00a0quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Power Music Workout &#8211; &#8220;All About That Bass&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a while since we had one of these. \u00a0If you hype a record for long enough before its UK release\u00a0&#8211; and also release it elsewhere in the European Union, at which point your publisher will apparently start licensing cover versions\u00a0&#8211; then people will produce knock-off covers to either take advantage of the demand or just hope for confusion purchases. \u00a0Hence the appearance at number 13 of Power Music Workout.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Power Music Workout are among the least objectionable practitioners\u00a0in this area, since this is not a clone version; it&#8217;s a cover designed for use in workout classes. \u00a0It might pass for a rather uninspired dance mix, but\u00a0it&#8217;s not a straight copy; it can claim with a reasonably straight face to be a genuine cover version, and I\u00a0can genuinely imagine people buying it to use in exercise classes. \u00a0It&#8217;s actually still in the iTunes top 40 right now, so some people really do seem to be buying it because they want it. \u00a0(Unsurprisingly, Power Music Workout are not on YouTube, but if you really want to hear it, <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/irJeuKar8Ns\" target=\"_blank\">it&#8217;s the soundtrack on this video<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/AdLjvKA5qqo\" target=\"_blank\">Another cover of the song<\/a> is sitting at number 70, credited to Meghan Tonjes &#8211; which may well be a case of confusion purchases. \u00a0But\u00a0Tonjes is\u00a0a YouTuber who&#8217;s been releasing\u00a0records for a while; the name is a genuine coincidence, and\u00a0hers is an acoustic version that again bears very little resemblance to the original arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, when a song has enough anticipation to get\u00a0into the charts in three versions in the week before it&#8217;s released, you can figure it&#8217;s going to be big.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Jessie J, Ariana Grande &amp; Nicki Minaj &#8211; &#8220;Bang Bang&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0HDdjwpPM3Y?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This was released in America a while back to promote a reissue of Ariana Grande&#8217;s album. \u00a0That reissue hasn&#8217;t come out yet in the UK, so instead it&#8217;s being used here as\u00a0the\u00a0lead single from Jessie J&#8217;s next album. \u00a0It&#8217;s a Max Martin song, and the chorus is pretty strong, but&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The thing about Jessie J is there&#8217;s something terribly contrived sounding about her &#8211;\u00a0she\u00a0always sounds to me like she&#8217;s imitating mannerisms she&#8217;s picked up somewhere else. \u00a0She&#8217;s a collection of tics picked up from stage school and a record collection, basically. \u00a0And when you put her next to Nicki Minaj, who is phoning it in but can out-charisma Jessie J even while mostly thinking about what she&#8217;s going to have for dinner\u2026 well, that&#8217;s not good either.<\/p>\n<p>But hey. \u00a0Number 1. \u00a0And it&#8217;s a third number 1 for Jessie J, following &#8220;Price Tag&#8221; and &#8220;Domino&#8221; &#8211; both of which were in 2011, so it&#8217;s been a while. \u00a0Ariana Grande gets her second number 1 following &#8220;Problem&#8221;\u00a0from July. \u00a0Appallingly, this is the first Nicki Minaj single to make number 1 in the UK &#8211; though\u00a0since her previous biggest UK hit was the number 2 single &#8220;Starships&#8221;, it&#8217;s not as though the British have ever shown tremendously good taste in their Nicki Minaj selections.<\/p>\n<p>On the albums chart, a busier week.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;This\u00a0Is All Yours&#8221; by Alt-J<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0The follow-up to their debut &#8220;An Awesome Wave&#8221;, which got to 12 in 2013 and won the Mercury Music Prize. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/dCCXq9QB-dQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Hunger of the Pine&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(Caution: contains scenes of symbolic archery.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Popular Problems&#8221; by Leonard Cohen<\/strong> at 5. \u00a0My mum used to listen to Leonard Cohen when she was a student. \u00a0And at the age of 80 he&#8217;s still going. \u00a0He seems to be having a late-career revival of sorts &#8211; his previous album also made the top 5, something he hadn&#8217;t done since 1969. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/9VYXECtjOos\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Almost Like The Blues&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Syro&#8221; by the Aphex Twin<\/strong> at 8. \u00a0His first album since 2001&#8217;s &#8220;Drukqs&#8221;, and\u00a0the first time he&#8217;s made the top 10 &#8211; his previous peak was 11 with 1994&#8217;s &#8220;Selected Ambient Works Vol II&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0still the\u00a0Aphex Twin, not much has changed, but the reviews have been very positive. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/RUAJ8KLGqis\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Different Shades of Blue&#8221; by Joe Bonamassa<\/strong> at 9. \u00a0Blues rock guitarist. \u00a0He fairly churns out the albums these days &#8211; this is his sixth album in three years. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Z3_GOk36JD0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Different Shades of Blue&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Cheek to Cheek&#8221; by Tony Bennett &amp; Lady Gaga<\/strong> at 10. \u00a0Yes, really. \u00a0It&#8217;s an album of jazz standard covers, so if you want to hear Lady Gaga singing something completely different from normal, it&#8217;s got that. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Fg1meK-IgOM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Anything Goes&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Growing Up in Public&#8221; by Professor Green<\/strong> at 12. \u00a0That&#8217;s not hugely encouraging. \u00a0The single &#8220;Lullaby&#8221; is still at number 8, but a bit of rebuilding needing done\u00a0here, I think.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Violet Flame&#8221; by Erasure<\/strong> at 20. \u00a0Their sixteenth studio album. \u00a0The last one missed the top 40 entirely, but then it was a Christmas record. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/8bpZvM-16hk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Elevation&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Strut&#8221; by Lenny Kravitz<\/strong> at 21. \u00a0Hey, he&#8217;s still going too! \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/jAHlQ77lm10\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Chamber&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Miss Saigon &#8211;
