16 November 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, welcome back. \u00a0Let&#8217;s see if we can get this blog back on some sort of a schedule, and start by knocking off this week&#8217;s chart post before it becomes last week&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/XqLTe8h0-jo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>39. \u00a0Brian Wilson &amp; Various Artists &#8211; &#8220;God Only Knows&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s much-hyped\u00a0collaboration\u00a0debuted at 20\u00a0last month and then plummeted out of the top 75 within three weeks. \u00a0It rebounds here, because it&#8217;s a charity release for the Corporation&#8217;s\u00a0annual Children In Need fundraising drive, and\u00a0this is the sales week following the telethon. \u00a0But only to 39. \u00a0It&#8217;s basically flopped, considering its obvious\u00a0ambitions to recapture &#8220;Perfect Day&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>28. \u00a0Idina Menzel &#8211; &#8220;Let It Go&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, back\u00a0<em>again<\/em>. \u00a0I have no idea this time. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think anyone did it on\u00a0<em>X Factor. \u00a0<\/em>(Actually, they did, but three weeks ago\u2026)<\/p>\n<p><strong>20. \u00a0Kendrick Lamar &#8211; &#8220;i&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8aShfolR6w8?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lamar makes his\u00a0singles chart debut as a lead artist, though he&#8217;s previously\u00a0guested on mid-table hits by Robin Thicke and Alicia Keys. \u00a0His last album &#8220;Good Kid, MAAD City&#8221;, did make number 16 over on the album chart, and it was a\u00a0commercial breakthrough for him in the US, where it\u00a0went platinum. \u00a0&#8220;i&#8221; is the lead single from his third album, so it looks like the UK might be catching up.<\/p>\n<p>The actual record starts 50 seconds in\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0I mention this because I imagine a lot of people won&#8217;t stick with the\u00a0instrumental intro long enough to find that out. \u00a0The song is based on <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/f3Kf1Iy5E6U\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;That Lady&#8221; by the Isley\u00a0Brothers<\/a>, a number 14 hit from 1973,\u00a0though apparently it&#8217;s\u00a0largely a re-recording rather than a sample.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0Taylor Swift &#8211; &#8220;Blank Space&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e-ORhEE9VVg?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Officially, this is the second single from the &#8220;1989&#8221; album, starting to climb the charts as promotion begins. \u00a0&#8220;Welcome to New York&#8221;\u00a0doesn&#8217;t count,\u00a0apparently, because it was just a promotional single &#8211; a promotional single being a single that doesn&#8217;t get promoted. \u00a0Don&#8217;t ask.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a Max Martin collaboration, naturally enough. \u00a0The\u00a0guy playing the love interest in the video is\u00a0model Sean O&#8217;Pry, who\u00a0was apparently\u00a0ranked as the world&#8217;s most successful male model several years running. \u00a0It was at 30 in the midweeks, so it&#8217;s obviously been gathering momentum quite drastically;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/ixYFypXiEig\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>9. \u00a0Sam Smith &#8211; &#8220;Like I Can&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A track from his album &#8220;In the Lonely Hour&#8221; which is due to be released as a single in December. \u00a0But he performed it on\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> last weekend, so here it is now. \u00a0It&#8217;s dropping fast\u00a0in the midweeks, presumably because it was only promoted in one place, so expect a resurgence later.<\/p>\n<p>I question the first verse. \u00a0&#8220;He could be a sinner or a gentleman \/\u00a0He could be a preacher when your soul is damned \/ He could be a lawyer on a witness stand.&#8221; \u00a0What, standing in the wrong place?<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0The Veronicas &#8211; &#8220;You Ruin Me&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W_rZ9rHFwGY?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Remember these two? \u00a0Their\u00a0only previous UK chart appearances were in\u00a02009 when\u00a0their big international synth pop hit <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/ykW4rtW2eu0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Untouched&#8221;<\/a> got to number 8 (two years after its original release), and the record company bizarrely followed it up with their\u00a0four-year-old power pop debut <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rUR6tEsBO2o\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;4Ever&#8221;<\/a> (which got to 17 and swiftly vanished). \u00a0And\u00a0that was that &#8211; not because\u00a0subsequent releases failed, but because they had a massive falling out with their label and the third album was delayed for years. \u00a0Aside from one Australia-only holding single, this is the first thing they&#8217;ve released in five years.<\/p>\n<p>The sentimental ballad is not an obvious choice to relaunch their international careers with, particularly given the change of style from their previous two hits\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0but hey, it&#8217;s in the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>The Veronicas have the bizarre distinction of having been sued by Archie Comics for trade mark infringement for\u00a0calling themselves Veronica\u00a0(their actual names are Lisa and Jessica), a litigation which resulted in an odd settlement that included\u00a0Archie promoting\u00a0<em>them<\/em> in\u00a0<em>Veronica<\/em> #167\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Archie &amp; Friends<\/em> #100-101. \u00a0According to the band, they&#8217;re actually named after Winona Ryder&#8217;s character from\u00a0<em>Heathers<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/eZLYp-jgx-I\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>7. \u00a0Tom Odell &#8211; &#8220;Real Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 14 places\u00a0because Britain loves penguins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Gareth Malone&#8217;s All Star Choir &#8211; &#8220;Wake Me Up&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2ghScc6KDD0?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s main Children in Need fundraiser is an\u00a0oddity &#8211; yet another of Gareth Malone&#8217;s amateur choirs, this time comprised of BBC types and assorted children, taking a spirited crack at Avicii&#8217;s &#8220;Wake Me Up&#8221;. \u00a0Yes, the one that got to number 1 last July.<\/p>\n<p>This is Malone&#8217;s second number one, after\u00a02011&#8217;s Christmas number 1 <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/0hR6O7VxKaQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Wherever You Are&#8221;<\/a>, credited to &#8220;Military Wives with Gareth Malone&#8221;,\u00a0in which a choir of army wives\u00a0sang to their absent partners. \u00a0This makes him surely the only choirmaster to have two number 1 hits to his name.<\/p>\n<p>Bluntly, this\u00a0is a record that will sell (and indeed be listened to) on charitable grounds only &#8211; it&#8217;s a choral version of &#8220;Wake Me Up&#8221;, for god&#8217;s sake. \u00a0That&#8217;s disappointing, since I genuinely like\u00a0&#8220;Wherever You Are&#8221;; it&#8217;s\u00a0a perfectly acceptable piece of music with a sort of supercharged sincerity to it.<\/p>\n<p>Album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Endless River&#8221; by Pink Floyd<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0The band&#8217;s fifteenth and apparently final album. \u00a0Only their\u00a0sixth number 1 album, so it was by no means guaranteed. \u00a0The others\u00a0are &#8220;Atom Heart Mother&#8221; (1970), &#8220;Wish You Were Here&#8221; (1975), &#8220;The Final Cut&#8221; (1983), &#8220;The Division Bell&#8221; (1994) and &#8220;Pulse&#8221; (1995). \u00a0No, not &#8220;Dark Side of the Moon&#8221;. \u00a0No, not &#8220;The Wall&#8221;. \u00a0I know. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Ezc4HdLGxg4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Louder Than Words&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sonic Highways&#8221; by the Foo Fighters<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0The Foo Fighters pretty consistently place in the top 10, and usually at the top end. \u00a0This is their eighth studio album, tying in with an HBO show (yes, it&#8217;s that stage in their careers) where they record\u00a0each song in a different city. \u00a0Hence &#8220;Sonic Highways&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s a theme, I guess. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/V_YlZ1JdcVk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Something From Nothing&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Forever&#8221; by Queen<\/strong> at 5. \u00a0A compilation of obscurities rounded off with three tracks built around unfinished\u00a0recordings with\u00a0actual Freddie Mercury vocals. \u00a0One for the completists, obviously. \u00a0Sample: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/xTPdU_07YZY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Love Kills&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Only Human&#8221; by Cheryl<\/strong> at 7 &#8211; she&#8217;s never gone below 2 before. \u00a0Drops to 26 in the midweeks, so. \u00a0The singles &#8220;Crazy Stupid Love&#8221; and &#8220;I Don&#8217;t Care&#8221; made number 1, but it hasn&#8217;t done her much good on the album chart.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Into Colour&#8221; by Rumer<\/strong> at 12. \u00a0Her third album &#8211; the first two made the top 3. \u00a0It&#8217;s a very mahogany coffee table kind of thing, to an extent that probably limits its appeal quite drastically. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/B9EWeqo0KfM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dangerous&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Soundtrack of my Life&#8221; by Donny Osmond<\/strong> at 17. \u00a0Donny covers songs that are meaningful to him, for his sixtieth album. \u00a0His last studio album, 7 years ago, made the top 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Bloodstone &amp; Diamonds&#8221; by Machine Head<\/strong> at 18. \u00a0Mid-teens is fairly\u00a0typical for these guys. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/zSiKETBjARk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Now We Die&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Man Against Machine&#8221; by Garth Brooks&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>at 23. \u00a0His first studio album in 13 years. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/uyWADizqtHk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Mom&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(One for the evangelical mother&#8217;s day crowd.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Live: Her Greatest Performances&#8221; by Whitney Houston<\/strong> at 33. \u00a0A collection of live tracks\u00a0from 1983 to 2009. \u00a0Apparently\u00a0the only live album she&#8217;s released, which suggests there must be a lot more material of this sort to come, if the market is interested.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The\u00a0Inevitable End&#8221;
