\u00a0It must be, they have\u00a0the red cups out, and Bob Geldof is aggrieved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0Noel Gallagher&#8217;s High Flying Birds &#8211; &#8220;In The Heat of the Moment&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FIIZnZ-pgDI?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The lead single from their second album. \u00a0I say &#8220;they&#8221;, I think we all know this sells basically as a Noel Gallagher solo project. \u00a0Nostalgia rock acts like this don&#8217;t usually shift enough singles to chart any more; they make their money on the albums (if anywhere). \u00a0But Noel evidently still has the\u00a0ability to get the\u00a0fans out when he writes a decent song. \u00a0And though\u00a0it sticks doggedly to his well established formula, this\u00a0<em>is<\/em> a\u00a0pretty good\u00a0rendition of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a05 Seconds of Summer &#8211; &#8220;Good Girls&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0FfG_5JBVBQ?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Good girls are bad girls that haven&#8217;t been caught&#8221;. \u00a0Hmm. \u00a0Well, you know your audience, I guess. \u00a0This was originally a promotional single in October, when it got to number 19; it&#8217;s now being promoted as a full scale single. \u00a0Doesn&#8217;t look like it&#8217;s getting any higher this time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23. \u00a0One Direction &#8211; &#8220;Night Changes&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/syFZfO_wfMQ?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One Direction&#8217;s album &#8220;Four&#8221; enters the album chart at number 1 this week; technically this is currently just\u00a0the track that fans are cherry picking, but it&#8217;s been announced as the next single, hence the video above. \u00a0It&#8217;s perfectly pleasant, and the video is a hilarious piece of fan-bait. \u00a0Make believe that you&#8217;re on a date with a member of One Direction, ladies! \u00a0(Actually, the\u00a0pay-off is quite funny, if you don&#8217;t know it&#8217;s coming. \u00a0Probably not now, though.) \u00a0The official single &#8220;Steal My Girl&#8221; falls to 6 this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0Rixton &#8211; &#8220;Wait On Me&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z8Q7_mMj9po?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;ll be the follow-up to their July number 1 &#8220;Me and My Broken Heart&#8221;. \u00a0Gets them off the one-hit-wonder list, but that&#8217;s about all. \u00a0Basically a Maroon 5\u00a0record, and actually better than the last single. \u00a0But here it is, outside the top 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Wretch 32 &#8211; &#8220;6 Words&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DGIYXuZIWBY?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ooh, this is really quite good. \u00a0Wasn&#8217;t expecting that.<\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth single from his upcoming album &#8220;Growing Over Life&#8221;. \u00a0Previously pitched largely as a grime artist, he&#8217;s clearly spreading out with this rather delightful chill-out love song. \u00a0Somehow, Wretch 32 has managed to avoid becoming a proper mainstream star despite this being his fifth top ten hit (one of which got to number 1). \u00a0Hopefully this sticks around long enough\u00a0for a wider audience to hear it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0David Guetta featuring Sam Martin &#8211; &#8220;Dangerous&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EVr__5Addjw?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Guetta&#8217;s new album &#8220;Listen&#8221;\u00a0came out today; this is the final\u00a0single for it. \u00a0By Guetta&#8217;s\u00a0standards, it&#8217;s a departure from the formula &#8211; a bit less of the anthem, a bit\u00a0more of the strings and the Daft Punk. \u00a0In the video version, it takes a year and a day to get going &#8211; the actual song finally gets under way just before the four minute mark &#8211; but\u00a0the three minute radio edit is actually pretty strong. \u00a0And yes, that&#8217;s actor James Purefoy driving the other car.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Martin makes his second chart appearance, having previously guested on Guetta&#8217;s &#8220;Lovers On The Sun&#8221; earlier in the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0Olly Murs featuring Travie McCoy &#8211; &#8220;Wrapped Up&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/niLMQsD9ZG4?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Good lord, is this guy\u00a0still going? \u00a0 This is the lead single from Murs&#8217; fourth album, and it&#8217;s typically\u2026 polished, I guess. \u00a0It&#8217;s his highest chart placing since &#8220;Troublemaker&#8221;\u00a0got to number 1 in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne &#8211; &#8220;Real Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qdo_-U4PEsk?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This would have been Clean Bandit&#8217;s second number 1 if they hadn&#8217;t smashed straight into Band Aid. \u00a0But they&#8217;re\u00a0<em>on<\/em> Band Aid, so they can&#8217;t really complain, I guess. \u00a0An unusually straight performance video suggests that the\u00a0video production schedule has finally caught up with them; maybe they&#8217;ll get back to making more interesting stuff with the\u00a0next album. \u00a0This has been\u00a0available on their album for months,\u00a0but promotion\u00a0as a single seems to have reached a new audience. \u00a0It&#8217;s got a good chorus, and it would have been a\u00a0very acceptable number 1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Band Aid 30 &#8211; &#8220;Do They Know It&#8217;s Christmas? (2014)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-w7jyVHocTk?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s back, and this time it&#8217;s opposed to ebola! \u00a0But\u00a0let&#8217;s start\u00a0by acknowledging the fact that\u00a0not only is this the fastest selling single of the year, it had already achieved that mark by Wednesday. \u00a0So. \u00a0Keeping that in perspective&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth rendition of &#8220;Do They Know It&#8217;s Christmas?&#8221;,\u00a0all of which have been number 1s &#8211; the original in 1984, the politely erased from history Band Aid II from 1989,\u00a0the oh god did that actually happen Band Aid 20 from 2004, and now this. \u00a0Let&#8217;s hope something truly apocalyptic befalls Africa in the latter\u00a0part of 2024, so we can wheel it out again then. \u00a0Band Aid 37 just doesn&#8217;t have the same ring.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do They\u00a0Know It&#8217;s Christmas&#8221; is only the second\u00a0song to reach number 1 in four different versions. \u00a0The other one is &#8220;Unchained Melody&#8221;,\u00a0which made number 1 for Jimmy Young in 1955, the Righteous Brothers on re-issue in 1990, Robson &amp; Jerome in 1995, and Gareth Gates in 2002. Bit of a decline over the years there.<\/p>\n<p>The people on the record this time are Bastille, Bono, Clean Bandit, Disclosure, Paloma Faith, Guy Garvey (the lead singer from Elbow), Ellie Goulding, Angelique Kidjo, Chris Martin, Olly Murs, Sinead O&#8217;Connor, One Dirction, Rita Ora, Emeli Sande, Seal, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Underworld (who contribute a remix), and, er, a handful\u00a0of high-profile vloggers and Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw.<\/p>\n<p>There is obviously a case to be made that the\u00a0song is starting to sound \u00a0condescending. \u00a0Realistically, it&#8217;s not like the people of West Africa are unable to rustle up a calendar between them. \u00a0If anyone over there <em>doesn&#8217;t<\/em> know it&#8217;s Christmas, that&#8217;s probably because it&#8217;s November.\u00a0\u00a0 Fuse ODG certainly thought so &#8211; he\u00a0turned down the offer to be on this record,\u00a0since positivity about the new Africa is kind of his thing. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2014\/nov\/19\/turn-down-band-aid-bob-geldof-africa-fuse-odg\" target=\"_blank\">As he explains<\/a>, he\u00a0thinks the song falls into a tradition of fundraisers that stress exclusively the negative about Africa, which leads to Africans being seen as the sort of helpless wretches who can&#8217;t get anything done without nice white people to help them out.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it&#8217;s the fastest seller of the year by a mile, with downloads of 312,000 in one week, and no doubt it&#8217;ll be here next week too.<\/p>\n<p>Albums:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Four&#8221; by One Direction<\/strong> at 1, as noted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s The Girls&#8221; by Bette Midler<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0This is surprising &#8211; Bette Midler hasn&#8217;t been in the top 40 with an original studio album since 1991, and it&#8217;s not as if her prolific US output ever made that much impact on the UK chart. \u00a0This\u00a0collection\u00a0of girl group covers is apparently what the British have been waiting for. \u00a0Sample track: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/OewqBtA3nv4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Be My Baby&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Nothing Has Changed&#8221; by David Bowie<\/strong> at 9. \u00a0Multi-formatted compilation album &#8211;\u00a0the triple CD version is apparently the most authentic. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/nFX1y62l9C4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Sue (Or In A Season of Crime)&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(Not the easiest of listens, but Bowie can get away with this kind of thing.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Home Sweet Home&#8221; by Katherine Jenkins<\/strong> at 10. \u00a0More classical crossover material for the Christmas market. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/RUJU5sy0Ljs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dreaming of the Days&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;No Fixed Address&#8221; by Nickelback<\/strong> at 12. \u00a0That&#8217;d be their first studio album to miss the top 10. \u00a0Implausibly titled single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/IYnuSsM7tRw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Edge of a Revolution&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Serenata&#8221; by Alfie Boe<\/strong> at 14. \u00a0And more classical crossover.
