30 November 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, it&#8217;s one of those weeks where the record-buying public wanders off script! \u00a0Yay!<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Beyonce &#8211; &#8220;7\/11&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k4YRWT_Aldo?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Okay, that&#8217;s a pretty great video. \u00a0These things can easily not work &#8211; look, here I am hanging out in my luxury hotel suite with some people I have paid to be here &#8211; but this is genuinely fun. \u00a0&#8220;7\/11&#8221;\u00a0is\u00a0from the special edition of\u00a0last year&#8217;s eponymous album, which, despite having only two new songs, is nonetheless expanded to a modest six-disc set. \u00a0It&#8217;s not the most\u00a0radio-friendly thing she&#8217;s ever made, and it&#8217;s certainly not a showcase for her voice &#8211; frankly, you can see why it didn&#8217;t make the album proper &#8211; and the midweeks suggest it&#8217;s going no further.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/bg1sT4ILG0w\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>33. \u00a0Nico &amp; Vinz &#8211; &#8220;Am I Wrong&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A number 1 earlier in the year, of course. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know why it&#8217;s back, it&#8217;s not like anyone seems to have done it on\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Kiesza &#8211; &#8220;No Enemiesz&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uxY0To9Cb2g?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>First single number 1, second single number 4\u2026 \u00a0hmm. \u00a0And this was 19 in the midweeks, to boot. \u00a0Diminishing returns have set in badly here, which is a shame, since it&#8217;s probably a stronger single than &#8220;Giant in my Heart&#8221; &#8211; perhaps it was a mistake releasing such an obvious clone as the second single. \u00a0And yes, it really is called &#8220;No Enemiesz&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia helpfully synopsises the video: &#8220;In it, Kiesza dances around and eventually strips down to a bikini.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/koof3eLNoB4\" target=\"_blank\">24. \u00a0 \u00a0David Guetta featuring Emeli Sande &#8211; &#8220;What I Did For Love&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A track being cherry picked from Guetta&#8217;s new album &#8220;Listen&#8221;, presumably on the strength of Sande&#8217;s name. \u00a0The actual single, &#8220;Dangerous&#8221;, is at 9 this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22. \u00a0Years &amp; Years &#8211; &#8220;Desire&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6nJCF01b510?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You may remember Years &amp; Years from their featured artist credit on &#8220;Sunlight&#8221; by The Magician, which got to number 7 last month. \u00a0Only their lead singer was actually on that record, but that&#8217;s no reason not to try and leverage a few sales of their own off the back of it. \u00a0So here they are with their own synth pop routine. \u00a0It&#8217;s more interesting than &#8220;Sunlight&#8221;, but still a bit of a B-level Disclosure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18. \u00a0James Bay &#8211; &#8220;Hold Back The River&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mqiH0ZSkM9I?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>James Bay is a songwriter from Hertfordshire. \u00a0He toured with Hozier earlier in the year, and as with Hozier, this is a\u00a0superficially indie-ish track concealing\u00a0a rather more\u00a0radio-friendly engine. \u00a0Still, it&#8217;s not the sort of thing we&#8217;re used to seeing\u00a0in the top 20 these days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. \u00a0James Newton Howard \/ Jennifer Lawrence &#8211; &#8220;The Hanging Tree&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/14H8OzTzne4?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, this is an oddity. \u00a0This is a track\u00a0from the\u00a0<em>Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1<\/em>\u00a0score album. \u00a0Not the &#8220;soundtrack&#8221; album with all the licensed songs that are barely in the movie &#8211; the actual score. \u00a0A weird little quasi-folk number that slowly builds to orchestra and choir, it&#8217;s not something you expect to find in the top 40.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t seen the film, so it&#8217;s possible that the song is used in a way that accounts for it sticking in so many viewers&#8217; minds. \u00a0But the obvious appeal here is that it has vocals by actress Jennifer Lawrence.<\/p>\n<p>Since this is an album track download, the chart would normally just take the artist credit for the album as a whole\u00a0&#8211; which is given to composer James Newton Howard. \u00a0This would be a rather weird result, given that the\u00a0track features Jennifer Lawrence singing a\u00a0lyric taken from the book,\u00a0set to a tune written by the Lumineers, so that Howard&#8217;s actual contribution to this track seems to be limited to arranging it. \u00a0That may explain why the compilers have whacked Lawrence&#8217;s name onto their listings.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a one-week quirk, either &#8211; the midweeks have this climbing into the top 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0McBusted &#8211; &#8220;Air Guitar&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6mLKQgP8pdM?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Superannuated boy band alert. \u00a0McBusted is a merger of McFly\u00a0(all of them) and\u00a0the two members of Busted who aren&#8217;t Charlie Simpson. \u00a0They did an arena tour earlier in the year doing a combined greatest hits set, and are now trying their luck at an original album. \u00a0It sounds pretty much like you&#8217;d expect a Busted\/McFly comeback collaboration to sound, which is to say, they really are getting a bit old for this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Labrinth &#8211; &#8220;Jealous&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/50VWOBi0VFs?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second single from his upcoming album does rather better than &#8220;Let It Be&#8221;, which just missed the top 10. \u00a0This is one of his ultra-direct sincere ballads, which evidently plays better with the buying public than the clever-clever stuff. \u00a0It&#8217;s apparently addressed to one of his parents, who left when he was four. \u00a0Really rather\u00a0good, actually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Take That &#8211; &#8220;These Days&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I43R3jIFE74?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, this is unexpected. \u00a0Most people had Band Aid 30 pencilled in to stay at the top for a while &#8211; the physical single isn&#8217;t even out yet &#8211; but as it turns out, it drops to 2 in its second week out, and the midweeks see it leaving the top 10 entirely. \u00a0Granted that its sales were heavily front loaded by pre-orders, this is still a shockingly fast drop-off.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves the way clear for Take That to claim an unexpected 12th number one over a span of 21 years (and their second since they re-formed). \u00a0With the departure of both Jason Orange and Robbie Williams, Take That are now down to a trio of Gary\u00a0Barlow, Mark Owen and\u00a0Howard Donald (who surely can&#8217;t believe his luck at still having a job here). \u00a0Well into middle age and continuing to sell records on the strength of their new songs,\u00a0rather than being a mere nostalgia act, Take That have undeniably set a new benchmark for boy bands growing old with dignity.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0this single, Take That now match the Shadows&#8217; total of number 1s\u00a0(and most of the Shadows&#8217; were really Cliff Richard records). \u00a0Only two\u00a0bands have had more number 1s than this &#8211; the Beatles and, er, Westlife.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart, it&#8217;s MOR hell!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Never Been Better&#8221; by Olly Murs<\/strong>\u00a0enters at 1. \u00a0Insert obvious backhanded comment here. \u00a0The single &#8220;Wrapped Up&#8221; remains at 3.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Listen&#8221; by David Guetta<\/strong> at 8, which is surprisingly low. \u00a0We&#8217;ve covered the singles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Hope&#8221; by Susan Boyle<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0Her sixth album and the first to miss the top 10 &#8211; but come on, she&#8217;s done well off her moment of viral fame back in the last decade. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/3cfvQOJnJx8\" target=\"_blank\">Album trailer.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Dublin to Detroit&#8221; by Boyzone<\/strong> at 14. \u00a0Because who wasn&#8217;t crying out for an album of Motown classic in the inimitable style of Boyzone? \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/uX6gCXSR1X0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Reach Out (I&#8217;ll Be There)&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Strictly Come Dancing&#8221; by Dave Arch &amp; The Strictly Come Dancing Band<\/strong> at 22. \u00a0For that relative who thinks the cover versions on\u00a0<em>Strictly Come Dancing<\/em> are actually better than the originals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sirens of Song&#8221; by Jools Holland\u00a0&amp; His Rhythm &amp; Blues Orchestra<\/strong> at 25. \u00a0Covers album with various female guest singers. \u00a0Some pretty high profile\u00a0ones, actually &#8211; Joss Stone, Kylie Minogue, KT Tunstall, that kind of thing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;My Dream Duets&#8221; by Barry Manilow<\/strong> at 28. \u00a0I imagine it&#8217;s his\u00a0favourite duets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The London Sessions&#8221; by Mary J Blige<\/strong> at 40. \u00a0Just making the chart, but then she was never as big a mainstream star in this country. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/SCfdlUv22vU\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Whole Damn Year&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, it&#8217;s one of those weeks where the record-buying public wanders off script! \u00a0Yay! 36. \u00a0Beyonce &#8211;
