{"id":2877,"date":"2015-01-13T22:03:01","date_gmt":"2015-01-13T22:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2877"},"modified":"2015-01-13T22:03:01","modified_gmt":"2015-01-13T22:03:01","slug":"charts-11-january-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2877","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 11 January 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re still in the post-Christmas dead period. \u00a0Spare a thought, if you will, for\u00a0Tulisa Contostavlos, formerly of\u00a0N-Dubz and\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em>, who released her comeback single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QIvKgPOwrig\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Living Without You&#8221;<\/a> in this deadest of weeks and sees it limp to 44, even with a complete absence of competition. \u00a0It&#8217;s looking like the end of the road there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Echosmith &#8211; &#8220;Cool Kids&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SSCzDykng4g?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This has been climbing from the lower reaches of the top 75 for a couple of weeks now. \u00a0Echosmith are four siblings from Los Angeles, and this comes from their 2013 album &#8220;Talking Dreams&#8221;. \u00a0It was a slow burner that eventually went platinum in the US\u00a0(even though it never got higher than 13 in the Billboard chart), it&#8217;s already been a top ten hit in various European countries, and typically enough, the UK is pretty much the last country in the world to get it promoted. \u00a0It&#8217;s a hackneyed theme, but there&#8217;s something pleasantly\u00a0wistful about the track that\u00a0works.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/mqiH0ZSkM9I\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>36. \u00a0James Bay &#8211; &#8220;Hold Back The River&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This made number 18 at the start of December before dropping out of the chart after two weeks. \u00a0It&#8217;s probably back now because\u00a0the BBC put him at number 2 in their annual &#8220;Sound of Insert Year Here&#8221; list, and so it&#8217;s been getting some airplay on Radio 1. \u00a0(The number 1 slot went to synthpop group Years &amp; Years, who were on the chart a few weeks back.)<\/p>\n<p>How\u00a0good is the BBC&#8217;s track record? \u00a0Well, in 2014,\u00a0the top 5 included Sam Smith, Ella Eyre and George Ezra. \u00a0In 2013 they\u00a0had HAIM, AlunaGeorge, Laura Mvula and Chvrches. \u00a0So not a bad track record. \u00a0But the lists are a weird mix of the conspicuously successful and the utterly unknown &#8211;\u00a0they confidently tipped <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/yC-0p4k0jw4\" target=\"_blank\">Sampha<\/a> as a star of\u00a02014, for example &#8211; which at least undermines the argument that BBC support becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/k4YRWT_Aldo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>33. \u00a0Beyonce &#8211; &#8220;7\/11&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh, this is back. \u00a0This peaked at 36 at the start of December and it&#8217;s been hovering just outside the top 40 ever since;\u00a0presumably it&#8217;s benefitting from the lack of competition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/hqQY9UkGC_A\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>19. \u00a0Blonde featuring Melissa Steel &#8211; &#8220;I Loved You&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another curious rebound &#8211; this entered at 7 in mid-December and promptly set about making its way out of the chart, only to rebound when it got to 35. \u00a0Since it&#8217;s a fairly routine dance record, I honestly don&#8217;t know what the deal is here, beyond the possibility\u00a0that radio is still playing it for want of having anything else around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Tchami featuring Kaleem Taylor &#8211; &#8220;Promesses&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CH0FbBuPlaQ?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s only significant release. \u00a0It was at 3 in the midweeks, so it&#8217;s probably not sticking around long. \u00a0Tchami is a French DJ, Kaleem Taylor is an English singer &#8211; here&#8217;s his own single <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/mgyeFFMC2qA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Love Me Back&#8221;<\/a>, which, in the way of these things, is rather more interesting. \u00a0Not much more to say about this one, really. \u00a0It&#8217;s an above average house record.<\/p>\n<p>So far as I&#8217;m aware, the video&#8217;s claim that\u00a0Enid, Oklahoma has a reputation for lightning strikes is invented. \u00a0The people in the video are apparently a mixture of genuine lightning strike victims and\u00a0actors &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/rdmproductions.com\/casting-call-people-needed-for-tchami-music-video\/\" target=\"_blank\">here&#8217;s the casting call<\/a>, which informs us that the director&#8217;s intention was a &#8220;docu-fiction portrait film&#8221; which &#8220;captures the lives and bodies and possessions of people who have got themselves struck by lightning or are trying to, in order to get closer to God&#8221;. \u00a0Enid\u00a0does have the world&#8217;s third largest grain storage facility, though.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OPf0YbXqDm0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars &#8211; &#8220;Uptown Funk&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;ll be four weeks\u00a0total, matching the run of &#8220;All About That Bass&#8221; from October. \u00a0If it can manage five,\u00a0that&#8217;ll match\u00a0&#8220;Blurred Lines&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The album market is still dead in terms of new releases;\u00a0<strong>Sam Smith&#8217;s &#8220;In The Lonely Hour&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>is this week&#8217;s number one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re still in the post-Christmas dead period. \u00a0Spare a thought, if you will, for\u00a0Tulisa Contostavlos, formerly of\u00a0N-Dubz and\u00a0X Factor, who released her comeback single &#8220;Living Without You&#8221; in this deadest of weeks and sees it limp to 44, even with a complete absence of competition. \u00a0It&#8217;s looking like the end of the road there. 39.
