{"id":2882,"date":"2015-01-19T22:16:59","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T22:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2882"},"modified":"2015-01-19T22:16:59","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T22:16:59","slug":"charts-18-january-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=2882","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 18 January 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the UK music industry believes firmly in (a) promoting everything for weeks before release, and (b) not promoting\u00a0anything new in the run-up to Christmas, the dead period meanders on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/SSCzDykng4g\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>28. \u00a0Echosmith &#8211; &#8220;Cool Kids&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 11 places,\u00a0in one of the few notable movements in the lower half of the charts. \u00a0Otherwise, it&#8217;s most just stuff that&#8217;s been out for ages, still swilling around waiting to be displaced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. \u00a0Avicii &#8211; &#8220;The Nights&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UtF6Jej8yb4?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This came out internationally in December, but\u00a0it&#8217;s only just come out in the UK. \u00a0The theory, presumably, was that\u00a0it would have a clear run at airplay in the post Christmas period. \u00a0In practice it&#8217;s off to a surprisingly slow start for an Avicii song,\u00a0particularly considering that he hasn&#8217;t had a\u00a0new single out since last March. \u00a0Perhaps the rave\/country angle is starting to test people&#8217;s patience, though from the look of iTunes, it&#8217;s going to climb.<\/p>\n<p>The guy in the video is one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rorykramer.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rory Kramer<\/a>, who\u00a0describes himself as a &#8220;professional life liver&#8221;, though in more prosaic terms he appears to be a video director and YouTuber. \u00a0As usual, Avicii somehow gets away without crediting his vocalists; in this case, it&#8217;s a guy called RAS who&#8217;s also had a hand in writing songs for people like Steve Aoki and, um, 5 Seconds Of Summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Sia\u00a0featuring The Weeknd &amp; Diplo &#8211; &#8220;Elastic\u00a0Heart&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KWZGAExj-es?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is on the &#8220;1000 Forms of Fear&#8221; album which has been out for a while. \u00a0&#8220;Chandelier&#8221; was, obviously, the big hit; it only made number 6, but that was back in July, and it&#8217;s still\u00a0hanging around at number 19. \u00a0&#8220;Elastic Heart&#8221; also appears on the\u00a0soundtrack of the latest Hunger Games movie, but it&#8217;s charting now largely on the back of the video, which brings back Maddie Ziegler from &#8220;Chandelier&#8221;, and has her, er, dance with Shia LaBeouf. \u00a0Or cage-fight him. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0a bit of both. \u00a0It&#8217;s a video that lends itself to creepy readings if you&#8217;re so inclined, but then it&#8217;s pretty clear who has the upper hand here. \u00a0The officially sanctioned interpretation is that they represent differing sides of Sia&#8217;s personality.<\/p>\n<p>The Weeknd gets his credit on this record because he appears on the version from the\u00a0<em>Hunger Games\u00a0<\/em>soundtrack, though the chart is typically lumping all versions of the song together. \u00a0His only previous chart appearance was on Drake&#8217;s &#8220;Crew Love&#8221;, which scraped to 37 in 2012. \u00a0Producer\u00a0Diplo has had a couple of hits before (most notably <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/UJ30WRNXBZ8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Earthquake&#8221;<\/a>, a collaboration with DJ Fresh that got to number 4 in 2013).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/MYSVMgRr6pw\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>3. \u00a0Hozier &#8211; &#8220;Take Me To Church&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to pretend that something is happening in a top ten with five non-movers, let&#8217;s note that this is still climbing, and it&#8217;s the real beneficiary of the dead month.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/OPf0YbXqDm0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars &#8211; &#8220;Uptown Funk&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Five\u00a0weeks\u00a0&#8211; matching the total of &#8220;Blurred Lines&#8221; from 2013. \u00a0Can it possibly manage six?
