1 February 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have crossed the desert of\u00a0January! \u00a0Behold, new releases!<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0The Weeknd &#8211; &#8220;Earned It&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/waU75jdUnYw?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->From the soundtrack to\u00a0<em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>. \u00a0The video is directed by the film&#8217;s director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who seems to be gunning for &#8220;erotic yet classy&#8221;. \u00a0Decide for yourself how close she gets. \u00a0At any \u00a0 That&#8217;s Dakota Johnson in the video being suspended by ropes about 3 minutes in, by the way. \u00a0Take away the video and it&#8217;s actually a rather\u00a0conventional romantic ballad, though a pretty good one.\u00a0\u00a0The Weeknd has previously cropped up as a guest on a couple of singles, most notably Sia&#8217;s &#8220;Elastic Heart&#8221; a couple of weeks back, but this is his first\u00a0chart appearance as lead artist.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be getting more from\u00a0<em>Fifty Shades<\/em> next week when Ellie Goulding&#8217;s single comes out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Selena Gomez &#8211; &#8220;The Heart Wants What It Wants&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ij_0p_6qTss?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I imagine it does, Selena. \u00a0I imagine it does.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of two new tracks from\u00a0her greatest hits collection &#8220;For You&#8221;. \u00a0More known in the UK as a denizen of entertainment news than as somebody who actually sells records, Gomez has only had two previous hits in this country &#8211; &#8220;Naturally&#8221; (2010) and &#8220;Come and Get It&#8221; (2013), both of which\u00a0did at least make the top ten. \u00a0Still, that greatest hits album is going to be a tough sell &#8211; and indeed, it enters this week at 64. \u00a0This single was at 15 in the midweeks, so sales must have fallen off a cliff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23. \u00a0Maroon 5 &#8211; &#8220;Sugar&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/09R8_2nJtjg?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It says a lot about Maroon 5 that this is a band who were inspired to make a video by\u00a0<em>The Wedding Crashers<\/em>, of all things. \u00a0The official line is that the video shows them appearing unannounced at\u00a0genuine weddings across LA on one day. \u00a0If you believe that you&#8217;ll believe anything &#8211;\u00a0it&#8217;s not remotely plausibly shot, a couple of actors have claimed credit for appearing in it, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/celebs\/news\/a35402\/maroon-5-sugar-video-fake-weddings\/\" target=\"_blank\">several others <em>appear<\/em> to be in it,<\/a>\u00a0and besides,\u00a0who the hell is that delighted to see Maroon 5?<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. \u00a0James Bay &#8211; &#8220;Hold Back The River&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 13\u00a0places. \u00a0This has had a real resurgence after he cropped up on the BBC&#8217;s\u00a0Sound of 2015 list, and now beats its 2014 peak.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Hannah Wants &amp; Chris\u00a0Lorenzo &#8211; &#8220;Rhymes&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HlwvWRcPVTw?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s random dance record, from two\u00a0English DJs making their chart debut. \u00a0Good video, with the over saturated archive footage. \u00a0The vocal sample is the hook of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/KNSxVaqp-8w\" target=\"_blank\">Busta Rhymes&#8217; &#8220;Touch It&#8221;<\/a>, which\u00a0made the top 10 in 2006. \u00a0Apparently there&#8217;s some of Daft Punk&#8217;s &#8220;Technologic&#8221; in there too.<\/p>\n<p>Strangely, only two Hannahs have made the top 40 before, both as guest singers doing dodgy covers. \u00a0Hannah Alathea sang on\u00a0Soda Club&#8217;s 2002 version of <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/oC757dwEUZA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Take My\u00a0Breath Away&#8221;<\/a> and their 2003 hammering of <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/g5h-V0Eczr0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Heaven Is A Place On Earth&#8221;<\/a>, while in 1991, Hannah &amp; Her Sisters offered their services to producers PJB, who thoughtfully graced the chart\u00a0with the track below. \u00a0(Stick with it to 1:10 for the full experience.)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XcFj6M9lc2A?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Karen Harding &#8211; &#8220;Say Something&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SiwgvQA8ksE?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another chart debut. \u00a0Karen Harding\u00a0is a singer who&#8217;s shown\u00a0up on things like the early rounds of <em>X Factor<\/em> and even the BBC&#8217;s dreaded\u00a0<em>Eurovision: Your Country Needs You<\/em>. \u00a0She finally gets her moment here, thanks in part to having MNEK\u00a0as producer. \u00a0Oddly, MNEK&#8217;s only had a hit\u00a0in his own right as a singer, on Gorgon City&#8217;s &#8220;Ready For Your Love&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Kanye West, Rihanna &amp; Paul McCartney &#8211; &#8220;FourFiveSeconds&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kt0g4dWxEBo?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second West\/McCartney collaboration doubles as the lead single from Rihanna&#8217;s next album, so it would very probably be higher if there had been advance hype or, well, a video that came about before this Tuesday. \u00a0As with the previous single, they were also pretty aggressive about keeping it off the likes of YouTube (until the official video showed up). \u00a0It&#8217;s another minimalist ballad, nothing groundbreaking though nothing particularly like the discography of anyone involved,\u00a0and\u00a0one of the occasional Rihanna records that actually showcases her as a singer first. \u00a0It&#8217;s growing on me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0Fergie &#8211; &#8220;L.A. Love (La La)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GLyP0B2Q-R4?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a name we haven&#8217;t heard in a while. \u00a0Fergie was last in the chart as a member of the Black Eyed Peas in 2011; as a solo artist, we last saw her as a guest on David Guetta&#8217;s 2010 number 1 &#8220;Gettin&#8217; Over You&#8221;; and for a solo hit in her own right, you have to go all the way back to 2007, when &#8220;Big Girls Don&#8217;t Cry&#8221; got to 2.<\/p>\n<p>This is the lead single from her upcoming second solo album. \u00a0It came out last year in the US, and Americans have been able to enjoy listening to it in Chrysler commercials and as the theme tune to\u00a0<em>Kourtney &amp; Khloe Take The Hamptons<\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a DJ Mustard number, and how much Fergie is really adding to it is debatable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/OPf0YbXqDm0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars &#8211; &#8220;Uptown Funk&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s seven weeks, matching the\u00a0run of\u00a0&#8220;Bleeding Love&#8221; in 2007. \u00a0It looks pretty much certain that he won&#8217;t manage eight (and besides, the next landmark would be\u00a0the ten week run of &#8220;Umbrella&#8221; from earlier in 2007). \u00a0Nonetheless,\u00a0this\u00a0has been an epic run. \u00a0The fact that the release schedule has been dead doesn&#8217;t completely explain it; that normally results in\u00a0records that have been out for a while trading places at number 1. \u00a0It&#8217;s a major,\u00a0once in five-years-or-so hit.<\/p>\n<p>On the albums chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Title&#8221; by Meghan Trainor<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0The single &#8220;Lips\u00a0Are Movin'&#8221; drops to 4.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Modern Nature&#8221; by The Charlatans<\/strong> at 7. \u00a0Their twelfth album, and the first since the death of drummer Jon Brookes in 2013. \u00a0It&#8217;s their highest chart place since &#8220;Wonderland&#8221; in 2001 (five studio albums ago). \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/YLEGsayAXKw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;So Oh&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Unguarded&#8221; by Rae Morris<\/strong> at 9. \u00a0Debut album, though she&#8217;s been putting out\u00a0EPs for five years now. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/eYgXSoA5njA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Under The Shadows&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Stay Gold&#8221; by First Aid Kit<\/strong> at 11. \u00a0Swedish folk duo. \u00a0Not sure what&#8217;s going on here &#8211; this has been out for ages, and it was at 25 on the midweeks. \u00a0They&#8217;re\u00a0touring at the moment, but\u00a0that doesn&#8217;t usually get albums into the chart. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/DKL4X0PZz7M\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;My Silver Lining&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;F.E.A.R.&#8221; by Papa Roach<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0That&#8217;s their highest position\u00a0since &#8220;Lovehatetragedy&#8221; back in 2002 (you don&#8217;t go to Papa Roach for subtle album titles). \u00a0In fact, they haven&#8217;t even got above 30 since 2002. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/g9z4DWB7Iy8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Face Everything And Rise&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Matador&#8221; by Gaz Coombes<\/strong> at 18. \u00a0The second solo album from the singer of Supergrass. \u00a0The first one (2012&#8217;s &#8220;Here Come The Bombs&#8221;) didn&#8217;t\u00a0chart, so evidently they&#8217;ve done a better promotional job this time round. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/8S5cZ_nFXes\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;20\/20&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;We Will Not Be Shaken&#8221; by Bethel Music<\/strong> at 34. \u00a0It&#8217;s debatable whether this belongs on the artist album chart &#8211; Bethel Music is\u00a0the music production\u00a0wing of Bethel Church, described by Wikipedia as &#8220;a non-denominational megachurch&#8221; based in Redding, California, and this appears to be a compilation album of various worship artists associated with them. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/byEUIzfVLAs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Ever Be&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Kalley Heiligenthal. \u00a0With the best will in the world, the video really does have a touch of the zombie horde to it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have crossed the desert of\u00a0January!
