1 March 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the annual chart that follows on the Brit Awards, hence a bunch of odd\u00a0re-entries. \u00a0The\u00a0awards themselves seem to have some short-term sales effect, and the\u00a0primetime TV coverage is always good for shifting a few\u00a0downloads to people who\u00a0aren&#8217;t regular audience members. \u00a0Without the Brits this would be another rather quiet chart.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/iD2rhdFRehU\" target=\"_blank\">40. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tlYcUqEPN58\" target=\"_blank\">38. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Sing&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\n35. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Bloodstream&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lp-EO5I60KA\" target=\"_blank\">12. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Thinking Out Loud&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K4Udv9qgOWU?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Yes, this week&#8217;s chart is 10% Ed Sheeran, after he won Best Male Artist and Best British Album. \u00a0&#8220;Don&#8217;t&#8221; and &#8220;Sing&#8221; are re-entries; &#8220;Thinking Out Loud&#8221; is on its way down the chart after its stint at number 1 last year. \u00a0&#8220;Bloodstream&#8221; is the odd one out; it&#8217;s the track he actually performed on the show, because it&#8217;s going to be his next single. \u00a0It&#8217;s been available\u00a0since the album &#8220;X&#8221; came out last year, but\u00a0the version for single release is <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/7gdJdIpRblU\" target=\"_blank\">a remix by Rudimental<\/a>. \u00a0What&#8217;s actually charting at this stage is the album track, so it&#8217;ll climb in due course.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H4ifSrE8iSg\" target=\"_blank\">33. \u00a0George Ezra &#8211; &#8220;Blame It On Me&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VHrLPs3_1Fs\" target=\"_blank\">18. \u00a0George Ezra &#8211; &#8220;Budapest&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t actually win anything\u00a0but a performance of &#8220;Budapest&#8221; gets it to rebound 12 places, and &#8220;Blame It On Me&#8221; re-enters. \u00a0Both have been top ten hits\u00a0before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PaKr9gWqwl4\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>32. \u00a0Paloma Faith &#8211; &#8220;Only Love Can Hurt Like This&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Performed on the\u00a0awards show, and instantly rebounding from outside the top 100.<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0Madonna &#8211; &#8220;Living For Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IawGbR_10RQ?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Performed on the show,\u00a0and boy, there are less painful ways of getting press coverage. \u00a0Madonna isn&#8217;t the force on the singles chart that she once was &#8211; this is her biggest hit since &#8220;Celebration&#8221; got to number 3 in 2009. \u00a0It&#8217;s a Diplo collaboration,\u00a0not that you&#8217;d\u00a0know to\u00a0hear it. \u00a0The midweeks have it dropping to 38, so it&#8217;s going no further, at least for now. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/u9h7Teiyvc8\" target=\"_blank\">There is an actual video for it<\/a> (which the Brit Awards performance\u00a0loosely tries to re-create).<\/p>\n<p><strong>24. \u00a0Disciples &#8211; &#8220;They Don&#8217;t Know&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s-kJU21Flr0?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, that&#8217;s a bleak video for a dance record, but that&#8217;s what you tend to get with Luke Jacobs. \u00a0He also brought you Rudimental&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J9-Lwpgfd1E\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Not Giving In&#8221;<\/a> and Chase &amp; Status&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t9pU9FPz-dk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Alive&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0Basically a director of choice for dance acts wanting random depth to go with their records.\u00a0 Disciples are a trio of producers from London, making their chart debut. \u00a0While that vocal loop sounds like it ought to be a sample, it&#8217;s actually one of the group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22. \u00a0Axwell &amp; Ingrosso &#8211; &#8220;Something New&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QwaVVsvLlc4?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, I know it&#8217;s officially styled as &#8220;Axwell \/\\ Ingrosso&#8221;, but come on. \u00a0This is two thirds of the Swedish House Mafia, if you didn&#8217;t know. \u00a0A genuinely odd video, dropping out enough of the song with sound effects to make it more of an advert for the track than a conventional video. \u00a0It&#8217;s a non-mover on the midweeks, which\u00a0makes this a bit of an underachiever compared to SHM. \u00a0Strangely, I can&#8217;t seem to find any details of who the singer is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15. \u00a0Sam Smith &#8211; &#8220;Lay\u00a0Me Down&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HaMq2nn5ac0?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The song he did on the Brit Awards. \u00a0He also won Best British Breakthrough Artist, which is what they give you when you aren&#8217;t Ed Sheeran. \u00a0This was\u00a0his first solo single back in 2013, when it failed to chart;\u00a0it&#8217;s getting a re-release (or, more realistically, re-promotion) now, in order to keep the album promotion ticking over. \u00a0The midweeks have it going no further, but\u00a0he has had five\u00a0singles from this album by this point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Kelly Clarkson &#8211; &#8220;Heartbeat Song&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d4_6N-k5VS4?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Highest new entry, but more by default than anything else. \u00a0It&#8217;s a bit over-polished, isn&#8217;t it? \u00a0There&#8217;s quite a catchy chorus in there somewhere, but it&#8217;s all very polite. \u00a0It is, nonetheless, her biggest UK hit since &#8220;Mr Know-It-All&#8221; four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the\u00a0lead single from Clarkson&#8217;s final album under her current deal, and she&#8217;s already working on\u00a0a country album, all of which makes it sound a tad contractual-obligation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0David Guetta featuring Emeli Sande &#8211; &#8220;What I Did For Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yt_myLDSdsY?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 14 places, to a more plausible\u00a0position for the people involved. \u00a0It doesn&#8217;t\u00a0seem to be\u00a0sticking around. \u00a0Still, there&#8217;s an actual video now &#8211;\u00a0even if it&#8217;s only marginally\u00a0more elaborate than a lot of lyric videos these days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AJtDXIazrMo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Ellie Goulding &#8211; &#8220;Love Me Like You Do&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Four weeks, topping an entirely static top five. \u00a0That&#8217;s now her longest-running number 1 &#8211; &#8220;Burn&#8221; managed 3 weeks. \u00a0She&#8217;ll be gone next week, as we look to be finally returning to a more typical release schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Over on the album chart, the addition of streaming data does not result in any obvious shake-up, though the\u00a0rebounding of various Brits-associated albums obscures matters a bit. \u00a0The number one would have been the same with or without streaming (and indeed on streaming alone).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;In the Lonely Hour&#8221; by Sam Smith<\/strong> is at 1, presumably because everyone&#8217;s already got the Ed Sheeran album.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Royal Blood&#8221; by Royal Blood<\/strong> rebounds to 3, because they were on the show too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Physical Graffiti&#8221; by Led Zeppelin<\/strong> at 6. \u00a040th anniversary re-mastered version. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/e_lA9hD5io8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Trampled Under Foot&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(And yes, apparently the BBC really did regard this\u00a0as appropriate visual filler when playing the track on BBC2.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Fan of a Fan: The Album&#8221; by Chris Brown &amp; Tyga<\/strong> at 7. \u00a0Nice of them to spell out\u00a0that it&#8217;s an album. \u00a0Perhaps they think some of their fans might be unsure. \u00a0The single &#8220;Ayo&#8221; is at 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Race for Space&#8221; by Public Service Broadcasting<\/strong> at 11. \u00a0The\u00a0&#8220;archive samples&#8221; gimmick of PSB is often rather more compelling than the actual music, but\u00a0the last album got to 21, so they&#8217;re\u00a0making headway. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wY-kAnvOY80\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Gagarin&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Killer Instinct&#8221; by Black Star Riders<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0This is the name used by the current touring line-up of Thin Lizzy for their new material (in deference to the death of Phil Lynott in 1986). \u00a0This is their second album under that name, and the first\u00a0got to 25. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/iRZa-qf7haw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Finest Hour&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Dark Sky Paradise&#8221; by Big Sean<\/strong> at 23. \u00a0His first top 40 album in the UK, rather surprisingly. \u00a0It&#8217;s his third album. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/4__E77V5FQY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dark Sky (Skyscraper)&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Return to Forever&#8221;
