&#8220;Demons&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Originally a number 13 hit\u00a0a year ago &#8211;\u00a0it&#8217;s back because it was covered on\u00a0<em>The Voice UK<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18. \u00a0Kanye West featuring Allan Kingdom, Theophilus London &amp; Paul McCartney &#8211; &#8220;All Day&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.spotify.com\/?uri=spotify:album:2md46sH5bfkAhyFFp3xxOY\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This is the song that Kanye West officially debuted\u00a0at the Brit Awards, getting a studio release a little bit later. \u00a0The\u00a0video has yet to be released (his performance is even missing from\u00a0the Brit Awards\u00a0YouTube channel, who\u00a0posted everything else),\u00a0but\u00a0hey, it&#8217;s on Spotify.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re wondering where Paul McCartney is on this one &#8211; and it&#8217;s fair to say that his influence is not immediately apparent &#8211; then\u00a0apparently that&#8217;s him whistling and playing the guitar for a few seconds near the end. \u00a0Their other collaboration,\u00a0&#8220;FourFiveSeconds&#8221;, climbs to 3 his week.<\/p>\n<p>Theophilus London is a rapper from Trinidad, now based in New York. \u00a0This is his first UK hit, and the first time anyone called Theophilus has charted in this country. \u00a0Allan Kingdom doesn&#8217;t even merit a Wikipedia page yet, but he&#8217;s a\u00a0Canadian rapper now living in St Paul. \u00a0He&#8217;s associated with a guy called Plain Pat, who used to be West&#8217;s manager. \u00a0Here&#8217;s his own single <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/xbW1_ZdWon4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Blast&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are quite a few other recognisable names\u00a0listed on this song, with five credited producers including West himself, Puff Daddy, and French Montana, and nineteen (!) songwriters, one of whom is \u00a0Kendrick Lamar. \u00a0The catalogue of writing credits is partly because\u00a0the\u00a0track apparently samples elements (not very prominent ones) of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/2UcBrbpJIZfM88GfSwgmNK\">&#8220;Dance With Me&#8221; by Noel Ellis<\/a>, a 1983 reggae track, and <a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/3yNxQHU20kjC2ZlDFYAmlw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Going Down&#8221; by Flatliners<\/a>, which is a Turkish drum and bass record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Alex Adair &#8211; &#8220;Make Me Feel Better&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/626fsEM1Cts?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another entry in the genre of cut-up vocal samples over deep house, this time with xylophones. \u00a0Actually, it&#8217;s a good entry in\u00a0the genre, and a\u00a0decent\u00a0video too, as &#8220;girls dancing in various places&#8221; goes &#8211; it&#8217;s shot with some style, and the video panel is a really nice touch. \u00a0Alex Adair is a British producer but,\u00a0in the\u00a0way of these things, the director has opted for LA. \u00a0The track has been on Soundcloud for a year. \u00a0The vocals are lifted\u00a0from <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Jz_D-greh8Q\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Ain&#8217;t Nothing But The Real Thing&#8221; by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell<\/a> (number 34 in 1968, which\u00a0is incredibly low). \u00a0It&#8217;s at 1:24 if you want to check.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Marlon Roudette &#8211; &#8220;When The Beat Drops Out&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BLRgaU9uUnA?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Marlon Roudette\u00a0is an English singer who&#8217;s been around for a few years\u00a0without making any particular impact at home. \u00a0He was a member of\u00a0a duo called Mattafix ten years ago, who had a number 1 hit in several European countries\u00a0with <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/4mtfnfQoAco\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Big City Life&#8221;<\/a>.\u00a0 It got to 15 in the UK. \u00a0In 2011, his\u00a0single <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Jk5kYjD9E1I\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;New Age&#8221;<\/a> was a number 1 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 2011, but\u00a0in\u00a0the UK, it\u00a0stalled at number 90. \u00a0Neither track sounds anything\u00a0like this record, which repositions him as\u00a0something closer to Alex Adair. \u00a0It&#8217;s his first release since improbably signing with Simon Cowell, who seems to have decided\u00a0that it&#8217;s time to diversify the\u00a0portfolio beyond just reality\u00a0TV and Labrinth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Years &amp; Years &#8211; &#8220;King&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g_uoH6hJilc?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Trad\u00a0synth pop! \u00a0This is the third hit for Years &amp; Years. \u00a0The first was a charity credit for the whole band when their lead singer appeared\u00a0on &#8220;Sunlight&#8221; by Magician, a track which debuted at 7 and dropped out of the top 40 after three weeks. \u00a0The second was their own single &#8220;Desire&#8221;, which debuted at 22 and vanished even quicker. \u00a0So there&#8217;s not exactly a track record of rabid Years &amp; Years fans to account for this being here &#8211; but, on the other hand, the BBC pushed them heavily in its &#8220;Sound of 2015&#8221; list, so they&#8217;ve got a lot of radio airplay behind them on this single. \u00a0It&#8217;s got a\u00a0strong hook\u00a0but I don&#8217;t see it managing a second week at the top.<\/p>\n<p>On the albums chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Chasing Yesterday&#8221; by Noel Gallagher&#8217;s High Flying Birds<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0You can&#8217;t fault the honesty of the title. \u00a0Noel&#8217;s second album under this name, and\u00a0a second number 1. \u00a0The single, <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/bzQYtpjMjSo\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Ballad of the Mighty I&#8221;<\/a>, got to 54.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Piece By Piece&#8221; by Kelly Clarkson<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0Mid top 10 is fairly standard for a Kelly Clarkson studio album. \u00a0The single\u00a0&#8220;Heartbeat Song&#8221; drops to 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sweet Soul Music&#8221; by The Overtones<\/strong> at 10. \u00a0Easy listening harmony act. \u00a0Their previous three albums made the top 10. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/8rJi_3ZvyBQ\" target=\"_blank\">Title track.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Brave&#8221; by The Shires<\/strong> at 10. \u00a0Debut album from an English\u00a0duo with the unusual distinction of being signed to a Nashville label in the US. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/GgPt5r1D79s\" target=\"_blank\">Title track.<\/a>\u00a0 (Honestly, though, songs like <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/ExH0x1JRz7w\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a> sound like they wouldn&#8217;t take much repurposing for One Direction.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Hand Cannot Erase&#8221; by Steven Wilson<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0Far and away\u00a0his highest solo chart placing &#8211; he&#8217;s never got above 28 before. \u00a0He was also the founder of Porcupine Tree, who never got above 23. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/gOU_zWdhAoE\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Perfect Life&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A Beautiful Collection&#8221; by Carole King<\/strong> at 32. \u00a0King only had two hit singles in this country &#8211; and the bigger one, <a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/78MOoKfsvwwDMds8bvUFRd\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;It Might As Well Rain Until September&#8221;<\/a> (number 3 in 1962) isn&#8217;t on this collection. \u00a0So it&#8217;s a\u00a0bit of\u00a0a tough sell. \u00a0Indisputably classic hit\u00a0that\u00a0<em>is<\/em> on it: <a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/0RA4lxXk8swbBZeNAbmyGo\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;It&#8217;s Too Late&#8221;<\/a> (number 6 in 1971).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a moment, we\u00a0return to our regularly scheduled turnover of number one singles. \u00a0Which is good, because the rest of the chart is pretty quiet. 33. \u00a0Imagine Dragons &#8211;
