{"id":3003,"date":"2015-04-13T22:53:02","date_gmt":"2015-04-13T21:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=3003"},"modified":"2015-04-13T22:53:02","modified_gmt":"2015-04-13T21:53:02","slug":"charts-12-april-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=3003","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 12 April 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, no reviews this week &#8211; because there&#8217;s nothing\u00a0<em>to<\/em> review, aside from anything else &#8211; but don&#8217;t forget there&#8217;s a new podcast, one post down. \u00a0Meanwhile\u2026\u00a0for the second week running, the midweek charts get it wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40. \u00a0Meghan Trainor &#8211; &#8220;Dear Future Husband&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ShlW5plD_40?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Third single from the album, and the bloom seems to be off the rose at this point. \u00a0This has been climbing from the lower reaches for four weeks now, and conceivably it could go further, but\u00a0this track hasn&#8217;t done brilliantly internationally,\u00a0and the doo-wop revivalist schtick only goes so far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>27. \u00a0OMI &#8211; &#8220;Cheerleader&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YqeW9_5kURI\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>24. \u00a0Major Lazer &amp; DJ Snake featuring M\u00d8 &#8211; &#8220;Lean On&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jGflUbPQfW8?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Up 10 and 14 respectively. \u00a0Remember I said last week that these were very low entry points for singles that had done well internationally? \u00a0Well, turns out that because I forgot to check when they actually go on sale; they&#8217;re charting at the moment on streaming alone. \u00a0They&#8217;re now on sale (&#8220;Cheerleader&#8221; has been brought forward because of a cash-in version starting to pick up sales), so\u00a0both\u00a0will jump a lot next week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cheerleader&#8221; has also now got a different video for the UK market, which is the one embedded above. \u00a0Don&#8217;t know why they bothered, really &#8211; it&#8217;s not a noticeable improvement on <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/i1Jp-V4jalI\" target=\"_blank\">the one they already had<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22. \u00a0Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth &#8211; &#8220;See You Again&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RgKAFK5djSk?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another track charting on streaming\u00a0alone (well, virtually &#8211; apparently a few\u00a0people managed to buy it as an album track download from the\u00a0<em>Furious 7<\/em> soundtrack before that was stopped). \u00a0It goes on sale as a single this week, and\u00a0as of right now, it looks to be fighting with &#8220;Cheerleader&#8221; for the number 1. \u00a0It&#8217;s a tribute to the late Paul Walker, who appears in the film posthumously. \u00a0This doubtless explains why it&#8217;s, at the least, a bit more reflective in tone than you might expect from something on the\u00a0<em>Furious 7<\/em> soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Puth, making his chart debut here, is a YouTuber who got signed. \u00a0Somewhat randomly, he&#8217;s also in the video for &#8220;Dear Future Husband&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17. \u00a0Pep &amp; Rash &#8211; &#8220;Rumors&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cif8IcBwoTk?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pep &amp; Rash are Dutch DJs, which means they spell &#8220;Rumors&#8221; the American way. \u00a0No\u00a0bloody loyalty to European spellings,\u00a0these people. \u00a0And hey, it&#8217;s been a while since we&#8217;ve had a video quite so transparently going for the women in underwear angle. \u00a0The vocals, unusually for a hit single,\u00a0come from the unglamorous source of\u00a0a\u00a0sample CD, &#8220;Soul Rush Future House Vocals 3&#8221;; the uncredited and heavily pitch-shifted singer is Chantelle Rowe, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/boogiematters\/theres-a-rumour-feat-chantelle-rowe\" target=\"_blank\">here&#8217;s a track<\/a> which\u00a0uses the sample at something closer to its original pitch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Stevie McCrorie &#8211; &#8220;Lost Stars&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lvJDuBoPjGY?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Number 1 in the midweeks, so obviously this one really tanked in the second half of the week. \u00a0McCrorie is\u00a0the\u00a0winner of this year&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Voice<\/em> <em>UK<\/em>, a ticket to fame and fortune if never there was one.<\/p>\n<p>The unfortunate reality\u00a0for\u00a0<em>The Voice UK<\/em> is that it&#8217;s now\u00a0completed its fourth season and has yet to produce any\u00a0remotely successful recording artist. \u00a0This may be partly because it&#8217;s on the BBC, who\u00a0don&#8217;t like\u00a0promoting commercial products, but\u00a0that ought to be easily bridged by the classic device of making the winner&#8217;s single a charity release. \u00a0For whatever reason, until now there hasn&#8217;t even\u00a0<em>been<\/em> a winner&#8217;s single.<\/p>\n<p>McCrorie at least has the comfort of knowing that he instantly\u00a0gets far and away the highest chart position ever achieved by a\u00a0<em>Voice UK<\/em> winner. \u00a0The previous record was a dismal 30, set by Andrea Begley with her cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/bLfvdZkTZ_8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;My Immortal&#8221;<\/a>. Obviously the top ten is a lot better, but the bottom line is that the sales here were overwhelmingly in the immediate aftermath of the final, and there was\u00a0minimal interest after that. \u00a0That&#8217;s not exactly promising.<\/p>\n<p>Following\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em>&#8216;s lead, &#8220;Lost Stars&#8221; is a\u00a0cover of a moderately obscure song that wasn&#8217;t previously released\u00a0as a single in this country. \u00a0The original is from last year&#8217;s romantic comedy\u00a0<em>Begin Again<\/em>, in which the story involved it being a personal song that was tragically commercialised. \u00a0It was nominated for Best Original Song in last year&#8217;s Oscars, though it didn&#8217;t win. \u00a0The movie soundtrack features two versions,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cL4uhaQ58Rk\" target=\"_blank\">one by Adam Levine<\/a>, who\u00a0had a supporting role as (of course) a musician, and this rendition\u00a0by Keira Knightley.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sLTRSakuugs?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Nick Jonas &#8211; &#8220;Jealous&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yw04QD1LaB0?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of the Jonas Brothers starts a solo career &#8211; or more accurately, resumes it, since he released a solo album back in 2005, and had a side project in 2009, Nick Jonas &amp; The Administration. \u00a0(The Administration, rather oddly, were three former members of Prince&#8217;s New Power Generation.)<\/p>\n<p>The Jonas Brothers were never a particularly big deal on the UK chart &#8211; they had two middling hits in 2008, neither of which made the top ten &#8211; so to all intents and purposes this is a fresh launch. \u00a0The song is pretty self-explanatory, though that doesn&#8217;t prevent Wikipedia offering the insight that &#8220;Lyrically, the song talks about &#8216;the feeling of threat men experience when another man looks [at] or interacts with their girlfriend&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cLyUcAUMmMY\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Jess Glynne &#8211; &#8220;Hold My Hand&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Very unexpectedly,\u00a0Jess Glynne holds on for a third week at number one, as 2015 stubbornly refuses to engage in the familiar weekly turnover of number 1s. \u00a0She only just does it &#8211; her actual sales, 39,878, are the lowest weekly sale for a number 1 single since 2008, but 1.74 million streams (converted to notional\u00a0sales of 17,400 for chart purposes) are enough to push her over the edge and retain the number 1 spot.<\/p>\n<p>This is only the second time that the\u00a0inclusion of streaming data has made a difference to the number 1. \u00a0It&#8217;ll be a miracle if she&#8217;s still here next week\u2026 but I&#8217;ve said that before.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart, all is quiet<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Future Hearts&#8221; by All Time Low<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0All Time Low have yet to have a hit single in this country, but their three albums have charted at 20, 9 and 1, so there&#8217;s clearly some momentum here. \u00a0Video: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sYeM0nFWcqE\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Something&#8217;s Gotta Give&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Undertow&#8221; by Drenge<\/strong> at 14. \u00a0As endorsed by Tom Watson. \u00a0Drenge&#8217;s first album just missed the top 40 but got plenty of good reviews; the follow-up, which sees them expand to\u00a0include a bass player,\u00a0does rather better. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nsqy-z8HQ-o\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;We Can Do What We Want&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;No Pier Pressure&#8221; by Brian Wilson<\/strong> at 25. \u00a0His eleventh solo album, and\u00a0his second highest chart placing. \u00a0(The highest, naturally, was for &#8220;Smile&#8221;.) \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hTkM3uqWctg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Right Time&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, no reviews this week &#8211;
