3 May 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, Swedish novelty records, American high schools, and CBeebies credit sequences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Skepta &#8211; &#8220;Shutdown&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MQOG5BkY2Bc?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Skepta is one of those long-standing UK rappers who doesn&#8217;t chart consistently but\u00a0has still been appearing on and off since 2010. \u00a0The woman in the bridge whining about aggressive dancing on prime-time TV is not a sample, but\u00a0it&#8217;s apparently a reference to the reaction to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_ABk7TmjnVk\" target=\"_blank\">Kanye West&#8217;s Brits 2015 performance of &#8220;All Day&#8221;<\/a>, where Skepta was\u00a0one of the thirty random guys\u00a0in black.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Hozier &#8211; &#8220;Someone New&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bPJSsAr2iu0?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Time for the difficult follow-up to the breakthrough hit, then. \u00a0This seems a bit more suited to Radio 2 (which normally means an album audience rather than singles), but &#8220;Take Me To Church&#8221; didn&#8217;t immediately sound like a single either. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0still hanging around at 17. \u00a0&#8220;Someone New&#8221; is only just starting its promotional cycle as a single in this country, so it has potential to go further.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0AronChupa &#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;m An Albatraoz&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bznxx12Ptl0?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, that&#8217;s certainly something.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a novelty\u00a0track, obviously, but\u00a0it\u00a0was number\u00a01 in its native Sweden, and it&#8217;s done pretty well around Europe, Australia and\u00a0Canada too. \u00a0The UK seems more resistant, at least for now. \u00a0AronChupa is producer Aron Ekberg, though fans of Swedish fourth division football will also know him from his day job as the\u00a0goalkeeper for Byttorps IF. \u00a0 The uncredited singer &#8211; whose baffling yet bratty vocal probably makes the thing &#8211; is his sister Nora.<\/p>\n<p>AronChupa is apparently very fond of the\u00a0word Albatraoz, as\u00a0he&#8217;s also a member of a band called &#8220;Albatraoz&#8221; who made an entirely different (though lyrically reminiscent) single called <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qQ31INpjXX0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Albatraoz&#8221;<\/a> in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YKS1xjqEv8o\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>18. \u00a0Jack\u00a0\u00dc\u00a0featuring Justin Bieber &#8211; &#8220;Where Are\u00a0\u00dc Now&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 14 places in its third week out, giving Diplo two\u00a0concurrent top twenty hits (the other being Major Lazer&#8217;s &#8220;Lean On&#8221;, climbing to 4 this week). \u00a0And yes, after listing it as &#8220;Diplo &amp; Skrillex&#8221; last week, the chart compilers have apparently decided to go with &#8220;Jack\u00a0\u00dc&#8221; after all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. \u00a0Alesso featuring Roy English &#8211; &#8220;Cool&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-aWtrEFfS4E?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Alesso&#8217;s fourth consecutive top 10 hit,\u00a0though admittedly several of the others were collaborations with higher profile acts like Calvin Harris. \u00a0It&#8217;s the familiar formula for Swedish EDM-pop. \u00a0The piano riff is from <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/BHGaW8lBlSk\" target=\"_blank\">Kylie Minogue&#8217;s &#8220;Get Out\u00a0Of My Way&#8221;<\/a>, which got to number 12 in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Unusually, that&#8217;s Alesso himself in the video. \u00a0If you&#8217;re thinking the school looks either naggingly familiar or incredibly generic, that&#8217;s because it&#8217;s Venice High School in Los Angeles, a perennially popular location for Californian directors in need of an iconic-looking high school &#8211; and getting more iconic all the time, because of its ever-growing filmography.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Grease<\/em> was shot there. \u00a0So was\u00a0<em>Nightmare on Elm Street<\/em>. \u00a0And\u00a0<em>Heathers<\/em>. \u00a0And\u00a0<em>American History X<\/em>. \u00a0And <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/C-u5WLJ9Yk4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Baby One More Time&#8221;<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Not that they&#8217;re fussy &#8211; it&#8217;s also been used by <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Cqz713hhz1Y\" target=\"_blank\">Cher Lloyd<\/a>\u00a0and the Faders.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Iez5Xq_oW1c?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Roy English, making his first chart appearance, is a singer and producer who started out life in an indie band called\u00a0Eye Alaska under his real name of Brandon Wronski.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0Carly Rae Jepsen &#8211; &#8220;I Really Like You&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qV5lzRHrGeg?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This was number 1 in the midweeks, but it can&#8217;t sustain it. \u00a0It&#8217;s the lead single from her third studio album. \u00a0The first album didn&#8217;t trouble the UK at all; the second is largely remembered for the\u00a0global smash <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fWNaR-rxAic\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Call Me Maybe&#8221;<\/a>, which was\u00a0number 1 for a month in 2012. \u00a0The follow-up\u00a0&#8220;Good Time&#8221; also spent four weeks in the top 10, so it&#8217;s not like she was a one-hit wonder, but\u00a0she&#8217;s very definitely associated with that one song. \u00a0&#8220;I Really Like You&#8221; may well be a good enough chorus\u00a0to break that, though.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I am unable to listen to &#8220;Call Me Maybe&#8221; quite the same way these days, because for obvious reasons I get to see a lot of CBeebies, and for some reason I now find it alarmingly\u00a0reminiscent of the opening credits to <em>Topsy &amp; Tim<\/em>,\u00a0a sight which usually prompts a desperate scramble for the remote control. \u00a0The show is pretty much everything\u00a0those credits would lead you to expect.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kH__bGMod7w?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jGflUbPQfW8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0OMI &#8211; &#8220;Cheerleader&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unexpected! \u00a0This has now moved 37-27-2-2-1, and makes the top after a fortnight stuck behind Wiz Khalifa. \u00a0It actually relied on higher streaming to edge the number 1 position &#8211; the third record to take number 1 without being the highest seller. \u00a0It&#8217;s number 1 on iTunes right now, so it has a reasonable shot of hanging on for a second week.<\/p>\n<p>On the\u00a0album chart, it&#8217;s a one-horse race:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Magic Whip&#8221; by Blur<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0Their first studio album in 12 years. \u00a0All their studio albums since &#8220;Parklife&#8221; have gone to number 1. \u00a0Obviously, Blur are now at the stage of their career where they don&#8217;t need to bother with doing proper single releases, though there are a couple of\u00a0token videos, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Sp1ks7PTzng\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Go Out&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Let&#8217;s Hear It For The\u00a0Dogs&#8221; by The Proclaimers<\/strong> at 26. \u00a0That&#8217;s fairly standard for a Proclaimers album these days; they still have a loyal fan base, particularly in Scotland. \u00a0Single (which isn&#8217;t bad at all, actually): <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/l_2g652mAWA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;You Built Me Up&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Jekyll &amp; Hyde&#8221; by The Zac Brown Band<\/strong> at 36. \u00a0Country band from Georgia; big in the US,\u00a0making their first chart appearance in the UK. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/D05NewQpqxg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Loving You Easy&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, Swedish novelty records, American high schools, and CBeebies credit sequences. 39. \u00a0Skepta &#8211;
