{"id":3041,"date":"2015-05-29T20:21:18","date_gmt":"2015-05-29T19:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=3041"},"modified":"2015-05-29T20:21:18","modified_gmt":"2015-05-29T19:21:18","slug":"charts-24-may-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=3041","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 24 May 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A slightly busier chart than we&#8217;ve seen in recent weeks, but six new entries is still fairly tame by the standards of recent years. \u00a0Perhaps due to the streaming data slowing things down?<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Jessie J &#8211; &#8220;Flashlight&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DzwkcbTQ7ZE?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This is from the soundtrack to\u00a0<em>Pitch Perfect 2. \u00a0<\/em>Given that it&#8217;s had a month of promotion, a version of the song is\u00a0used prominently in the film,\u00a0and it\u00a0has co-writing credits for both Sam Smith and Sia (though not Jessie J herself), it&#8217;s a pretty weak debut position. \u00a0And indeed, it does sound like something Sam Smith or Sia might write and think, no, maybe not for my album. \u00a0It was at 27 in the midweeks, which would normally indicate that sales tailed off drastically, but oddly today&#8217;s midweeks have it climbing to 14, so don&#8217;t write it off just yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Sheppard &#8211; &#8220;Geronimo&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UL_EXAyGCkw?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This was a\u00a0big hit in Australia last year, and understandably enough, but it seems set to make\u00a0a one-week appearance at the bottom end of the chart before vanishing. \u00a0Sheppard are an indie pop outfit from Brisbane, named after the three sibling members&#8217; surname.<\/p>\n<p>There are two\u00a0completely different videos for the song. \u00a0The one above is the Australian original, but there&#8217;s also <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ozsmSlvGHv4\" target=\"_blank\">a more conventional performance video\u00a0<\/a>which YouTube lists as the &#8220;international version&#8221;. \u00a0And for masochists, there&#8217;s also a clumsy re-edit of that video to go with <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/u8AV98jYQNw\" target=\"_blank\">the entirely redundant Benny Bennassi remix<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>35. \u00a0Ne-Yo featuring Juicy J &#8211; &#8220;She Knows&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ne-Yo - She Knows (Official Video) ft. Juicy J\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fk1ZO_980DI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, nobody could call that a subtle video, could they? \u00a0Climbs to 24 in the midweeks, which\u00a0still isn&#8217;t great by Ne-Yo&#8217;s standards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>24. \u00a0Andie Case &#8211; &#8220;Want to Want Me \/ I Want You To Want Me Mashup&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EP6UVwi52yI?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An oddity. \u00a0As advertised, this\u00a0is a mash-up cover version. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rClUOdS5Zyw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Want to Want Me&#8221;<\/a> is a song from Jason DeRulo&#8217;s upcoming album, which didn&#8217;t\u00a0come out in this country until Monday\u00a0&#8211; and thus makes its first appearance on the UK chart in the form of an acoustic cover version which a singer from Seattle posted on YouTube. \u00a0It&#8217;s not a cash-in &#8211;\u00a0the Derulo track came out in March in the US, and has already been a top ten hit in most of\u00a0the rest of\u00a0Europe. \u00a0But this is the UK, and we do things differently here\u2026 \u00a0As for &#8220;I Want You To Want Me&#8221;, that&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4dkAm99pfDM\" target=\"_blank\">the Cheap Trick song which\u00a0got to\u00a0number 29 in 1979<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a genuine cover, not a clone, but something of a novelty &#8211;\u00a0the record is indeed the soundtrack of the YouTube video above, recorded in a car.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0Ella Eyre &#8211; &#8220;Together&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eK5mH9oF7T4?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ella Eyre had a number 1 in 2013 as the guest singer on\u00a0Rudimental&#8217;s &#8220;Waiting All Night&#8221;, but hasn&#8217;t\u00a0made it back into the top ten since then. \u00a0This was at\u00a06 in the midweeks, but\u00a0it can&#8217;t sustain it. \u00a0The record is\u00a0very much school-of-Rudimental (funny, that), and the video seems to be trying to shoehorn a love song\u00a0into a &#8220;gang of friends on holiday&#8221; schtick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u00a0Taylor Swift featuring Kendrick Lamar &#8211; &#8220;Bad Blood&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QcIy9NiNbmo?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A nice, subtle video, then. \u00a0Lots of guest appearances in there &#8211; among other things, that&#8217;s Selena Gomez as the ex-partner, and cameos from the likes of Hayley Williams, Ellie Goulding, Jessica Alba and Cindy Crawford.<\/p>\n<p>This is the single version of a track from last year&#8217;s &#8220;1989&#8221; album,\u00a0reworked with added Kendrick Lamar. \u00a0Usually when an album track\u00a0sprouts a guest rapper on its single release, it means that he&#8217;s going to\u00a0pop up for the middle eight, but here he actually gets the first two verses and relegates Swift to the chorus of her own song.<\/p>\n<p>Swift has openly stated that the song is\u00a0about another\u00a0female star who she fell out, apparently after some vaguely-specified transgression\u00a0coupled with what Swift sees as an attempt to sabotage her tour by\u00a0hiring key personnel out from under her. \u00a0She hasn&#8217;t actually named who she has in mind, but it doesn&#8217;t take a genius to figure out that the likely suspect is\u00a0Katy Perry, who poached several of Swift&#8217;s\u00a0backing dancers in the course of her last tour.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick Lamar\u00a0has never previously got above 15 on the singles chart, though his current album &#8220;To Pimp A Butterfly&#8221;\u00a0did get to number 1. \u00a0This was the second-biggest seller of the week, but of course, Taylor Swift doesn&#8217;t do streaming, so the new chart rules work against her.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jGflUbPQfW8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0OMI &#8211; &#8220;Cheerleader&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s four weeks, and it would have been number 1 with or without streams. \u00a0It&#8217;s the third number one to manage four weeks in this unusually slow year (the others were &#8220;Uptown Funk&#8221; and &#8220;Love Me Like You Do&#8221;). \u00a0It won&#8217;t manage five, but hey, who&#8217;s complaining.<\/p>\n<p>Since\u00a0&#8220;Cheerleader&#8221; is selling in a heavily remixed form from the pop-reggae original, it does not obviously lend itself to a follow-up hit, making OMI a likely candidate for the one-hit wonder list. \u00a0But we&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Desired Effect&#8221; by Brandon Flowers<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0Second\u00a0solo album from the Killers&#8217; frontman,\u00a0and his second number 1. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jcZ-0o53md8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Lonely Town&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Saturns Pattern&#8221; by Paul Weller<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0His twelfth studio album. \u00a0Obviously, Paul Weller doesn&#8217;t need singles. \u00a0But here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vARCtbWH-cE\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;White Sky&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sol Invictus&#8221; by Faith No More<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0Their first studio album since 1997. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NKP98hDBJ8w\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Superhero&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;#1 to Infinity&#8221; by\u00a0Mariah Carey<\/strong> at 8. \u00a0It&#8217;s a compilation of her number 1 hits, with one bonus track, called, obviously, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/da1xoQFE7ts\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Infinity&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Why Make Sense?&#8221; by Hot Chip<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0Their fifth album, and they graduated into being an albums-only act after\u00a0the second. \u00a0Number 13 is pretty much typical for them these days. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lfH5LmhvQQk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Need You Now&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Blurryface&#8221; by Twenty One Pilots<\/strong> at 14. \u00a0Fourth album by an Ohio indie duo, and their first appearance on the UK chart. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pXRviuL6vMY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Stressed Out&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Purple Album&#8221;
