31 May 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the post-Eurovision chart, which in recent years has resulted in some oddities making one-week appearances. \u00a0This year, not so much. \u00a0And\u00a0since the release schedules were otherwise quiet, it&#8217;s a\u00a0placid week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Charles Hamilton featuring Rita Ora &#8211; &#8220;New York Raining&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/50hjiawKKVA?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Charles\u00a0Hamilton is (obviously) a New York rapper who&#8217;s been releasing mix tapes for years; this is the lead single from his first studio album. \u00a0It&#8217;s also on the soundtrack album of\u00a0<em>Empire<\/em>, which\u00a0can&#8217;t hurt, even if its actual appearance on the show was thirty seconds long. \u00a0It&#8217;s going to climb next week.<\/p>\n<p>So far as the British\u00a0market is concerned,\u00a0the bigger draw here is probably Rita Ora. \u00a0Her previous hit was &#8220;I Will Never Let You Down&#8221;, which made number 1 a year ago, and was\u00a0<em>supposed<\/em> to be the lead single from her second album. \u00a0No follow-up appeared. \u00a0Instead, the promotional cycle is now starting up again with this record, and with a single called <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Q1fGOG3XXIQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Poison&#8221;<\/a> at the end of the month, which is apparently\u00a0<em>now<\/em> the lead single from her second album. \u00a0Part of the delay is presumably because Calvin\u00a0Harris\u00a0stopped working on the album after\u00a0they broke up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Q1fGOG3XXIQ\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>14. \u00a0Jessie J &#8211; &#8220;Flashlight&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 25, which is more like it, in terms of Jessie J&#8217;s chart record. \u00a0The\u00a0midweeks show it\u00a0going a bit further, but still not on course to make the top ten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0M\u00e5ns Zelmerl\u00f6 &#8211; &#8220;Heroes&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5sGOwFVUU0I?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Swedish winner of the Eurovision Song Contest. \u00a0I&#8217;d normally embed the official video, but it&#8217;s a lyric video, so let&#8217;s go with the rather more interesting live performance. \u00a0The song is generically uplifting in that Eurovision way, but let&#8217;s face it, if any country is going to churn out pan-continental pop success in its sleep these days, it&#8217;s Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish take\u00a0Eurovision rather more seriously than the British &#8211;\u00a0not that this is a high bar &#8211; and so they&#8217;ve taken the common sense approach of entering an passably\u00a0successful act\u00a0doing a decent enough song. \u00a0Astonishingly, this seems to go down better with European voters than Britain&#8217;s approach of picking something at random from the slush pile and giving it to a couple of bored chorus line members who figure that at least it&#8217;s better than waitressing and it&#8217;ll get them a free trip to Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>Granted that Zelmerlow started off on Swedish reality TV and that this is something of a comeback single for him, he&#8217;s still got two\u00a0Swedish\u00a0number 1 albums and two Swedish number 1 singles to his credit (this is one). \u00a0He&#8217;s not exactly the Swedish pop A-list &#8211;\u00a0that would be the likes of Avicii, and they&#8217;re not touching Eurovision with a barge pole, any more than David Guetta is going to enter for France &#8211; but at least he&#8217;s on some sort of list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Martin Garrix featuring Usher &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Look Down&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nJSdYlAFKqA?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Your\u00a0unusual video gimmick for the week: there are two versions of this video, which are identical except for reversing the genders. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZW2muvIKNh4\" target=\"_blank\">The female version<\/a> is here, if you want to contrast, though I can assure you there&#8217;s no difference beyond the gender switch, and an increased Balthazar Getty presence.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Garrix is the 19-year-old Dutch DJ who had a number 1 with &#8220;Animals&#8221; in 2013. \u00a0Until now his chart appearances have been with largely instrumental dance music; this is a very glaring swerve into Guetta\/SHM-style pop production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Jason Derulo &#8211; &#8220;Want to Want Me&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rClUOdS5Zyw?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A bit of a foregone conclusion that this was going to do well, after it charted last week in the form of a cover version by a woman singing in a car. \u00a0I preferred the woman in the car, actually. \u00a0The original\u00a0is an ultra-80s arrangement that sounds like a second cousin of &#8220;I Want To Dance With Somebody&#8221;. \u00a0I&#8217;ve always found Derulo a bit of a charisma-free zone &#8211;\u00a0there&#8217;s something a little bit generic and calculated about him for my tastes. \u00a0It&#8217;s a good enough pop song, I&#8217;d just\u2026 rather hear somebody else actually perform it. \u00a0He&#8217;s\u00a0<em>very professional<\/em>. \u00a0This would be good if\u00a0he was a plumber or something.<\/p>\n<p>His other number 1s were &#8220;In My Head&#8221; (2010), &#8220;Don&#8217;t Want To Go Home&#8221; (2011), and &#8220;Talk Dirty&#8221; (2013). \u00a0That&#8217;s four number\u00a0ones spread over six years, so\u00a0he must be doing something right. \u00a0Not for me, though.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;85% Proof&#8221; by Will Young<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0His sixth studio album and fourth number one. \u00a0And to think, when he won <em>Pop Idol\u00a0<\/em>Season 1 back at the dawn of the modern reality-TV era, people said\u00a0Gareth Gates would be the bigger star. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Jcv1vNqLVGg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Love Revolution&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(Nice to see Young is still making good videos.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;English Graffiti&#8221; by the Vaccines<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0Third album, all of which have been top 5. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7RM5byRW_jM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dream Lover&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(Pretty good.)<\/li>\n<li><b>&#8220;AT. LONG. LAST.
