14 August 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some housekeeping to start. \u00a0 2015 is continuing to be a remarkably\u00a0lethargic year for the\u00a0singles chart &#8211; which seems to be in part a consequence of adding streaming data, which (mildly) favours records with enduring appeal and squeezes out what would otherwise have been one-week entries\u00a0at the lower end of the top 40. \u00a0That also means that the records that\u00a0<em>are\u00a0<\/em>making the top 40 are tending to be less interesting on the whole. \u00a0That being the case,\u00a0I&#8217;m thinking of putting this feature on hiatus\u00a0for a bit, or perhaps converting it to a monthly round-up or something. \u00a0Instead, I thought\u00a0I might do some posts on CBeebies, the BBC&#8217;s\u00a0channel for young children. \u00a0Because I see a lot of CBeebies these days. \u00a0And\u00a0several people have actually said they&#8217;d read it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow.<\/p>\n<p><b>39. \u00a0Tough Love featuring Ginuwine &#8211; &#8220;Pony (Jump On It)&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ic5tpqyobM?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Re-issue of their first single, after &#8220;So Freakin&#8217; Tight&#8221; got to number 11 earlier this year. \u00a0It&#8217;s another of those dance records where the sampling is so extensive and so recognisable that there&#8217;s little choice but to acknowledge it as\u00a0a bootleg remix and give credit to the original artist. \u00a0In this case, it&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lbnoG2dsUk0\" target=\"_blank\">Ginuwine&#8217;s &#8220;Pony&#8221;<\/a>, which got to 16 in 1997. \u00a0The original has also re-entered the lower reaches of the chart, getting to 62. \u00a0Ginuwine is still active, but he hasn&#8217;t been in the\u00a0top 40 since 2003 &#8211;\u00a0which may explain why he was willing to show up for the video for this one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>29. \u00a0Selena Gomez featuring A$AP Rocky &#8211; &#8220;Good For You&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1TsVjvEkc4s?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Selena Gomez has a rather patchy track record in the UK; every so often she has a moderately big hit, but\u00a0those seem to be the ones that\u00a0cross over beyond a fairly narrow core audience. \u00a0Her biggest UK hit remains\u00a02010&#8217;s &#8220;Naturally&#8221; (as &#8220;Selena Gomez &amp; The Scene&#8221;), which got to number 7. \u00a0This is the lead single from her second album, and like most Disney\u00a0Channel alumni now in their early twenties, she&#8217;s\u00a0repositioning herself as a\u00a0sultry grown-up.<\/p>\n<p>A$AP Rocky has had two\u00a0top ten albums, but this is his first appearance in the singles chart. \u00a0In an intriguing promotional decision,\u00a0the video above omits his contribution entirely.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sbzzJ-WLGsA\" target=\"_blank\">23. \u00a0Rita Ora featuring Chris Brown &#8211; &#8220;Body On Me&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second single from her second album, released without prior promotion, and without a music video. \u00a0And that will no doubt be the explanation offered for why it lands at a distinctly underwhelming 23. \u00a0It&#8217;s a technically competent song, but if you can listen to Chris Brown in a love song without cringing, you&#8217;re a more forgiving man than I am.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Charlie Puth featuring Meghan Trainor &#8211; &#8220;Marvin Gaye&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/igNVdlXhKcI?rel=0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Charlie Puth&#8217;s second number 1 of the year, after\u00a0appearing on Wiz Khalifa&#8217;s &#8220;See You Again&#8221;\u00a0back in April. \u00a0It&#8217;s a 50s throwback track &#8211; in fact, the production might as well have pressed a button for a &#8220;Stand By\u00a0Me&#8221; preset\u00a0&#8211; which no doubt explains\u00a0why Meghan Trainor winds up here as a guest singer. \u00a0It&#8217;s very much in her wheelhouse. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0polished enough, but\u00a0a bit too slavishly copycat for my taste. \u00a0The actual Marvin Gaye did have a UK number 1 hit of his own &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YUzTr2P0AJo\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;I Heard It Through the Grapevine&#8221;<\/a>,\u00a0from 1969. \u00a0It&#8217;s much better than this.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Compton&#8221; by Dr Dre<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0Only Dre&#8217;s third album as a solo artist, and\u00a0the first to make number 1. \u00a0&#8220;2001&#8221; got to number 4 back in 1999, and his debut &#8220;The Chronic&#8221;, astonishingly, has never made the albums top 40\u00a0(even though it produced a minor hit single in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0F0CAEoF4XM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Nuthin&#8217; But a &#8216;G&#8217; Thang&#8221;<\/a>). \u00a0This was released as an iTunes exclusive, which no doubt explains why there&#8217;s presently nothing from it (legitimately) available on YouTube to link to.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Positive Songs for Negative People&#8221; by Frank Turner<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0His sixth studio album and the second to get to number 2. \u00a0That must be annoying.\u00a0 Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/P4IZbCl6iR4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Next Storm&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b>&#8220;Automatic&#8221; by Don Broco<\/b> at 6. \u00a0They&#8217;re a rock band from Brighton. \u00a0It&#8217;s been three years since their debut album &#8220;Priorities&#8221;, which got to 25; either the eroding albums market has worked in their favour, or touring has\u00a0been helping them. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LQ59HPH2X20\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Superlove&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Another One&#8221; by Mac DeMarco<\/strong> at 24. \u00a0Indie Canadian songwriter, finally charting in the UK on his fourth album. \u00a0Sample track: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lPeJMoms_Ag\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;No Other Heart&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Knockin&#8217; Boots&#8221; by Julio Bashmore<\/strong> at 25. \u00a0UK\u00a0dance producer; not a genre\u00a0that traditionally does very well in the album chart. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nYlqd02099A\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Holding On&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(Which is probably the best thing we&#8217;ve had so far.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Genexus&#8221; by Fear Factory<\/strong> at 31. \u00a0Sounds like a rejected mid-nineties X-book, doesn&#8217;t it? \u00a0This is the first time Fear Factory have made the album chart since 2001, though they\u00a0charted four times before that (and in fairness, their 2004 album got to 41). \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/osjYf8FBXbU\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dielectric&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some housekeeping to start. \u00a0 2015 is continuing to be a remarkably\u00a0lethargic year for the\u00a0singles chart &#8211;
