3 June 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, after a bit of experimenting,\u00a0I&#8217;m thinking a better way of doing these things is to go back to doing them weekly and accepting that they&#8217;re going to be fairly short. \u00a0Let&#8217;s try that for a bit and see how it\u00a0goes. \u00a0On this week&#8217;s singles chart&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/1xznGGDReH1oQq0xzbwXa3\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Drake featuring Wizkid &amp; Kyla &#8211; &#8220;One Dance&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eight weeks at number one,\u00a0the longest reign since &#8220;Umbrella&#8221;, but I&#8217;ve said before that these things aren&#8217;t entirely comparable, because adding streaming to the charts\u00a0makes sustained replay appeal much more of a factor than it ever was in the past. \u00a0On pure sales, this would be number 5 (and Justin Timberlake would be number 1). \u00a0The top three has now been static for three weeks, with Timberlake\u00a0and Calvin Harris in the other two slots. \u00a0The era of stasis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Clean Bandit featuring Louisa Johnson &#8211; &#8220;Tears&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BpucqbZtmts\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Here&#8217;s an interesting\u00a0move. \u00a0Louisa Johnson was the winner of last year&#8217;s\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em>,\u00a0the one who suffered the indignity of seeing her winner&#8217;s single\u00a0&#8220;Forever Young&#8221; enter at number 9. \u00a0This\u00a0was partly because the show was flagging, but\u00a0also partly because\u00a0the shift to a Friday\u00a0chart\u00a0made it a midweek release for the first time &#8211; and also because the shift to streaming works against <em>X Factor\u00a0<\/em>winning\u00a0singles, since\u00a0their appeal is more as a symbolic purchase to provide closure to the story than as\u00a0listening material.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0seems to have prompted a departure from the usual\u00a0strategy of sitting on the\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> winner for a most of a\u00a0year\u00a0before releasing an album. \u00a0The 2014 winner, Ben Haenow, waited till October 2015 to release his follow-up\u00a0single. \u00a0It \u00a0stalled at number 21. \u00a0This won&#8217;t do. \u00a0At this point,\u00a0<em>X Factor\u00a0<\/em>can&#8217;t afford another flop winner.\u00a0 So instead, Johnson\u00a0is\u00a0launching her career in a more conventional 2010s fashion &#8211;\u00a0with\u00a0a guest appearance on somebody else&#8217;s record. \u00a0And what better candidate than Clean Bandit, who started off as an interestingly quirky outfit before settling into the role of\u00a0coffee table euphoria purveyors? \u00a0Ever\u00a0since &#8220;Rather Be&#8221;, their singles\u00a0have\u00a0consistently placed in the top 10, which means they&#8217;ve got a pretty good shot of carrying Johnson to a proper hit and giving her some momentum. \u00a0 Since\u00a0they\u00a0always use guest singers, it\u00a0makes the collaboration relatively natural &#8211; and in 2014 they\u00a0served as a pretty good launchpad for Jess Glynne&#8217;s career.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/BiQIc7fG9pA\" target=\"_blank\">8. \u00a0Gnash featuring Olivia Johnson &#8211; &#8220;I Hate U I Love U&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/BiQIc7fG9pA\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Entering the top 10 in its third week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2Y6Nne8RvaA\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>10. \u00a0Kungs vs Cookin&#8217; on Burners &#8211; &#8220;This Girl&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jumping 19 places to enter the top 10 in its second week out. \u00a0See,\u00a0stuff\u00a0does still move on the\u00a0singles chart.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OORoOGY8D2M\" target=\"_blank\">14. \u00a0Cheat Codes\u00a0&amp; Kriss Kross Amsterdam &#8211; &#8220;Sex&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Climbing for the third straight week. \u00a0I guess <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ydrtF45-y-g\" target=\"_blank\">the source record<\/a> is far enough back in history to be new to a lot of listeners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5Nrv5teMc9Y\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>22. \u00a0Pink &#8211; &#8220;Just Like Fire&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reaching a new peak now that it has a video behind it. \u00a0They seem to still help\u00a0further down the chart, though they&#8217;re entirely unnecessary at the top end (and arguably a disadvantage because they divert plays from Spotify, which\u00a0counts to the chart,\u00a0to YouTube, which doesn&#8217;t).<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0Chainsmokers featuring Daya &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Let Me Down&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Io0fBr1XBUA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This has been climbing from the lower reaches for two months. \u00a0It&#8217;s pretty good, in fact, and the video it better\u00a0than it first looks, since an opening minute that looks desperately uninspired turns out to be deadpan. \u00a0This is\u00a0the Chainsmokers&#8217; third hit,\u00a0the biggest being the 2014 novelty hit &#8220;Selfie&#8221;, which sounds nothing like this. \u00a0Daya is an American singer who had some success internationally\u00a0last year with a track called <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LmK0WHkFIo8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Hide Away&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; but not in this country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34. \u00a0Adele &#8211; &#8220;Send My Love (To Your New Lover)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fk4BbF7B29w\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0third single from &#8220;25&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s unusually upbeat for Adele&#8230; and it has a co-writer credit for Max Martin. \u00a0The video, which simply superimposes multiple images of Adele performing the song, is very good. \u00a0The simplest ideas are the best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0OneRepublic &#8211; &#8220;Wherever I Go&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OXWrjWDQh7Q\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, well, it&#8217;s OneRepublic. \u00a0You know the drill by now.<\/p>\n<p>The new entries\u00a0on the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Ride&#8221; by Catfish &amp; The Bottlemen<\/strong> enters at 1. \u00a0Indie band; their\u00a0debut album got to number 10. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9mLD8FL28Nk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Soundcheck&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Lexicon of Love II&#8221; by ABC<\/strong> is at 5. \u00a0Reasonably well-received follow-up to\u00a0the 1982 album. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xLlaq4zGYwg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Viva Love&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;7\/27&#8221; by Fifth Harmony<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0The single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5GL9JoH4Sws\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Work From Home&#8221;<\/a> is still at 12.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us&#8221; by Architects<\/strong> at 15. \u00a0Metalcore, as if you couldn&#8217;t guess from the title. \u00a0Their fourth album; the previous one got to 16. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/O59JNz7rdIU\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;A Match Made In Heaven&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Skin&#8221; by Flume<\/strong> at 25. \u00a0US producer,\u00a0on his second album but making his first UK chart appearance. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-KPnyf8vwXI\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Never Be Like You&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Kidsticks&#8221;
