23 June 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was going to do\u00a0a Watch With Father over the weekend but, well, I&#8217;ve\u00a0been otherwise diverted. \u00a0No matter! \u00a0In these interesting times\u00a0we need an oasis of stability, and the UK\u00a0top 40 more than delivers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/1xznGGDReH1oQq0xzbwXa3\">1. \u00a0Drake featuring Wizkid &amp; Kyla &#8211; &#8220;One Dance&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clinging on by a 5% margin over the number 2 single, it&#8217;s still here after eleven\u00a0weeks at number 1. \u00a0It\u00a0<em>is<\/em> flagging\u00a0in both sales and streams, but nothing else has come along to replace it yet. \u00a0Even\u00a0allowing for the general slowing of the chart in the streaming era, this is pretty\u00a0amazing: only two records have ever had longer runs at number one, namely\u00a0&#8220;Everything I Do (I Do It For You)&#8221; by Bryan Adams (16 weeks in 1991) and &#8220;Love is all Around&#8221; by Wet Wet Wet (15 weeks in 1994). \u00a0Since its notional total sale\u00a0of 60,000\u00a0is the lowest for a number 1 single since October, this surely has to be it &#8211;\u00a0doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Sigala featuring John Newman &amp; Nile Rodgers &#8211; &#8220;Give Me Your Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ze6H75NCUs8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The highest new entry, and the only thing in the top 10 that isn&#8217;t a non-mover. \u00a0Producer Sigala has now had four straight top 10 hits, and he&#8217;s moving up in the world, having started off by sampling ABC, and now working with the actual live John Newman and Nile Rodgers. \u00a0Technically this is Rodgers&#8217; first solo\u00a0chart credit, since the Official Chart Company\u00a0doesn&#8217;t list him as a featured artist on &#8220;Get Lucky&#8221;, but he had several hits back in the day as a member of Chic.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0has been\u00a0available on streaming for a few weeks but it was doing nothing until became available for sales, which must say something about the audience for it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fk4BbF7B29w\"><strong>15. \u00a0Adele &#8211; &#8220;Send My Love (To Your New Lover)&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This has now moved 34-26-25-15. \u00a0Adele doesn&#8217;t need hit singles but she can\u00a0get them anyway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. \u00a0Calum Scott &#8211; &#8220;Dancing On My Own&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q31tGyBJhRY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the guy from Britain&#8217;s Got Talent covering Robyn. \u00a0There&#8217;s a proper video for it at last, which\u00a0might explain why it&#8217;s kicked up another gear after\u00a0a while floating around the bottom end of the chart (40-42-36-36-36-38-42-27-28-16). \u00a0The video, like the cover, is\u00a0very much Now That&#8217;s What\u00a0I Call Solemn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fEOyePhElr4\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>17. \u00a0Dua Lipa &#8211; &#8220;Hotter Than Hell&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hard to know what counts as a successful launch for a new act these days,\u00a0but hey, it&#8217;s climbing in its second week &#8211; by one place, but it&#8217;s climbing &#8211; and that&#8217;ll do for now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Io0fBr1XBUA\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>24. \u00a0The\u00a0Chainsmokers featuring Daya &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Let Me Down&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This seemed to have peaked a\u00a0couple of weeks\u00a0ago, but it&#8217;s back on the climb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0Bastille &#8211; &#8220;Good Grief&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZWCB3hpJDXM\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The video is NSFW. \u00a0This is the lead single\u00a0from Bastille&#8217;s second album, and it doesn&#8217;t sound remarkably different from the first, though you can see why it&#8217;s been chosen as the single to push to radio. \u00a0There&#8217;s a chorus here. \u00a0Leaving aside a live track from\u00a0an award ceremony,\u00a0Bastille were last in the chart in 2013, and they&#8217;re increasingly unusual in being an indie-ish band (however vaguely) who still register on the singles chart.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1ekZEVeXwek\" target=\"_blank\">26. \u00a0Ariana Grande &#8211; &#8220;Into You&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1ekZEVeXwek\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gathering pace, after entering at 40 a couple of weeks back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0Twenty One Pilots &#8211; &#8220;Heathens&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UprcpdwuwCg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A second hit for Twenty One Pilots following on their international hit &#8220;Stressed Out&#8221;, which got to 12 earlier in the year. \u00a0This is from the soundtrack to\u00a0<em>Suicide Squad<\/em>. \u00a0Doesn&#8217;t seem like the sort of thing that&#8217;s likely to stick around, but hey, there&#8217;s some\u00a0<em>Suicide Squad<\/em> footage in the video if that&#8217;s your thing. \u00a0This isn&#8217;t actually supposed to be their current UK single &#8211; that&#8217;s &#8220;Ride&#8221;, languishing at 64 &#8211; so the movie connection seems to be responsible for this one appearing instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Kent Jones &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Mind&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n49qi-dU9IE\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Rapper from Florida. \u00a0It&#8217;s his first official single, drawn from a mixtape last year. \u00a0The chorus is\u00a0based on the Barry White song <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/br-Dy3puDoc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Practice What You Preach&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A Moon Shaped Pool&#8221; by Radiohead<\/strong>\u00a0re-enters at number 1 after the physical release. \u00a0It previously made number 1 on\u00a0digital release in May, but dropped out of the\u00a0top 40 after four weeks. \u00a0The fact that it can return to number 1 on physical sales&#8230; well, that tells you all you need to know about the health of the album market, doesn&#8217;t it? \u00a0Video: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TTAU7lLDZYU\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Daydreaming&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Getaway&#8221; by The Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0They haven&#8217;t\u00a0missed the top 5 since 1994. \u00a0Their first album\u00a0without Rick Rubin since the 80s (it&#8217;s produced by Danger Mouse). \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Q0oIoR9mLwc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dark Necessities&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;On My One&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>by Jake Bugg<\/strong> at 4. \u00a0Third album, all making the top 5. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hG2ChG8-U6E\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Love, Hope and Misery&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Johannesburg&#8221; by Mumford &amp; Sons and Baaba Maal<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0Mumford &amp; Sons doing world music. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rAGWA-4U3QY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Wona&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Chaleur Humaine&#8221; by Christine and the Queens<\/strong> at 8. \u00a0Not a band, a French synthpop songwriter. \u00a0This has been out for a while but suddenly enters the chart on the strength of\u00a0some UK promotion. \u00a0There&#8217;s an English language version, but here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rs40yxHjTxQ\" target=\"_blank\">the original version of &#8220;Christine&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Dreaming Room&#8221; by Laura Mvula<\/strong> at 21. \u00a0Her second studio album, three years after the first. \u00a0The first one made the top 10, so this is a bit disappointing. \u00a0On the bright side, my local Starbucks is still hammering &#8220;Green Garden&#8221;, so some royalties there.\u00a0 Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7---iGdDIBQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Phenomenal Woman&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Magma&#8221; by Gojira<\/strong> at 24. \u00a0Making their first chart\u00a0appearance, a French metal band. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iVvXB-Vwnco\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Silvera&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Case\/lang\/veirs&#8221;
