Kyla &#8211; &#8220;One Dance&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The eternal number one\u00a0just won&#8217;t go away. \u00a0Kungs&#8217; &#8220;This Girl&#8221; spent four weeks at number 2, but this week it drops to number 5. \u00a0So Drake sees off another challenger. \u00a0And that&#8217;s fourteen weeks &#8211; matching the combined total of &#8220;Bohemian Rhapsody&#8221; across both its runs. \u00a0One more\u00a0week\u00a0and it\u00a0ties with &#8220;Love Is All Around&#8221;. \u00a0Sales\u00a0and streams\u00a0<em>are<\/em> both dropping, so it has to stop some time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Io0fBr1XBUA\" target=\"_blank\">2. \u00a0The Chainsmokers featuring Daya &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Let Me Down&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is at least some sign of the logjam of long-running hits starting to clear in the rest of the top 10. \u00a0So here&#8217;s the\u00a0next challenger &#8211; surely\u00a0<em>this<\/em> one must stand a chance of making number 1? \u00a0&#8220;Don&#8217;t Let Me Down&#8221;\u00a0came out in April, finally registered in the top 40 in June,\u00a0and really started gathering pace over the last couple of weeks. \u00a0It moved 7-2 this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ey_hgKCCYU4\" target=\"_blank\">3. \u00a0Jonas Blue featuring JP Cooper &#8211; &#8220;Perfect Strangers&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This would have been number 1 on a pure sales chart. \u00a0Even on a\u00a0combination of\u00a0sales and streams, it&#8217;s up\u00a0thirteen, making it\u00a0the highest climber two weeks running. \u00a0So both of these records\u00a0have some genuine momentum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q31tGyBJhRY\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>4. \u00a0Calum Scott &#8211; &#8220;Dancing on My Own&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up from 10 to 4. \u00a0After literally months hovering around number 40, this one really took\u00a0off after he signed to a major label which\u00a0started putting some promotional weight behind it. \u00a0So if\u00a0you\u00a0wondered whether\u00a0there&#8217;s still a benefit to being signed to a record label\u00a0in 2016, here&#8217;s the counter argument.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/n49qi-dU9IE\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>10. \u00a0Kent Jones &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Mind&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Feels like a throwback to me &#8211; certainly looks like one in the video &#8211; but this has now gone 39-26-12-10, so\u00a0it&#8217;s connecting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Shawn Mendes &#8211; &#8220;Treat You Better&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lY2yjAdbvdQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Up from 20 &#8211; a solid climb three weeks running, so it&#8217;s on its way to the top 10 as well. \u00a0And it now has a proper video. \u00a0The song is a routine &#8220;you deserve better than him and I shall pine from afar&#8221;\u00a0affair; the video\u00a0takes\u00a0it very\u00a0literally, and ends on\u00a0a domestic violence hotline number.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23. \u00a0Olly Murs &#8211; &#8220;You Don&#8217;t Know Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cAU7zsnH3Go\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The maddeningly inoffensive Olly Murs may not be the most memorable man in pop, but he still ranks as one of\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0bigger successes &#8211; this is the lead single from his fifth album, and while he hasn&#8217;t made the top 10 since 2014, or had a number 1 since 2012, last year&#8217;s single &#8220;Kiss Me&#8221; did hang around forever. \u00a0\u00a0Okay,\u00a0after that they tried him as the host\u00a0for the last series of\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em>, and although\u00a0I didn&#8217;t watch\u00a0it, the consensus seemed pretty clear that he was appallingly out of his depth. \u00a0But he&#8217;s been quietly replaced, so that can be brushed under the carpet as a mis-step that doesn&#8217;t have to be spoken about further. \u00a0As a singer, he&#8217;s settled into a respectable B-list career. \u00a0As usual, the song itself is polished but bland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28. \u00a0M\u00d8 &#8211; &#8220;Final Song&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WUcXQ--yGWQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You may remember\u00a0M\u00d8 as the guest singer on &#8220;Lean On&#8221; by Major Lazer &amp; DJ Snake, which got to number 2 last year. \u00a0&#8220;M\u00d8&#8221; is a play on her initials (Marie \u00d8rsted) and the Danish word for &#8220;maiden&#8221;. \u00a0This is her debut solo hit in the UK, but\u00a0she&#8217;s had sporadic hits in her native Denmark going back to 2013. \u00a0MNEK has a co-writing and production credit on this one. \u00a0It&#8217;s really rather good, with an off-kilter\u00a0arrangement on a great chorus. \u00a0Deserves to go further.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Charlie Puth featuring Selena Gomez &#8211; &#8220;We Don&#8217;t Talk Any More&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.spotify.com\/?uri=spotify%3Atrack%3A06KyNuuMOX1ROXRhj787tj\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Charlie Puth\u00a0technically had\u00a0two number ones \u00a0last year, but both were in collaboration with much\u00a0better known acts &#8211; Wiz Khalifa on\u00a0&#8220;See You Again&#8221; and Meghan Trainor on &#8220;Marvin Gaye&#8221;. \u00a0Officially &#8220;Marvin Gaye&#8221; was actually his single and Trainor was the guest, but the follow-up &#8220;One Call Away&#8221; got to number 26, so it&#8217;s back to the guest stars. \u00a0No video for this yet, so\u00a0its promotion as a single is just gearing up. \u00a0But in some weird timing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>35. \u00a0Selena Gomez &#8211; &#8220;Kill &#8216;Em With Kindness&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HHP5MKgK0o8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Selena Gomez has a single of her own to promote. \u00a0Lyrically, it&#8217;s pretty bad &#8211; a sub-Eurovision rise-about-the-haters schtick with lines like\u00a0&#8220;The world can be a nasty place&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;Your lies are bullets, your\u00a0mouth&#8217;s a gun&#8221; and the mystifying &#8220;Put out the fire before igniting \/ Next time you&#8217;re fighting&#8221;. \u00a0But once it gets away from the verses,the electropop production gives it a sort of gently amused detachment instead of the\u00a0strident defiance that songs like this usually go for. \u00a0The video reinforces that, mainly by completely ignoring the supposed theme of the song\u00a0and just pointing a camera at Selena Gomez in\u00a0something between a straight performance video and a magazine photo shoot. \u00a0The whole package actually works well&#8230; as long as you\u00a0let the verse lyrics gently wash over you.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Ellipsis&#8221; by Biffy Clyro<\/strong> at 1, because reasonably established rock bands still sell in\u00a0album format. \u00a0It&#8217;s their seventh studio album and their second number 1, following 2013&#8217;s &#8220;Opposites&#8221;. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/bpJvP4b5fX8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Wolves of Winter&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0The video certainly wrings everything it can from its limited animation budget &#8211;\u00a0it\u00a0opens with a wolf being pursued by a dinosaur and ends with the destruction of the Death Star.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Wildflower&#8221; by the Avalanches<\/strong> at 10. \u00a0The absurdly long-delayed follow-up to 2001&#8217;s &#8220;Since I Left You&#8221;. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SjfspM5sDIA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Frankie Sinatra&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0If you&#8217;d rather listen to the original that they plundered for samples, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/aB159Ac7sh0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Bobby Sox Idol&#8221; by Wilmoth Houdini<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Nothing&#8217;s Real&#8221; by Shura<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0Shura is another of those\u00a0singers championed by certain pop circles who can&#8217;t seem to actually have hits. \u00a0Mind you, that was was the case for Charlie XCX for a long time, and she got there in the end. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nJ4uBdmnKds\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;What&#8217;s It Gonna Be?&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Cheetah&#8221; by Aphex Twin<\/strong> at 14. \u00a0It&#8217;s an EP, really, but it\u00a0technically it meets the criteria for the\u00a0album chart. \u00a0The lead track is\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZEP-Qpw3lHg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;CIRKLON3 [\u041a\u043e\u043b\u0445\u043e\u0437\u043d\u0430\u044f mix]&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and it actually has an official video &#8211;\u00a0directed by 12-year-old Ryan Wyer, but official for all that. \u00a0(This seems\u00a0to be genuine &#8211; he\u00a0has an entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCjjcBgtyIsVijmPC1Y9jY3Q\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube channel<\/a>\u00a0which includes a bunch of Aphex Twin fan videos\u00a0along fairly similar lines.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Perspective&#8221; by Lawson<\/strong> at 23. \u00a0From the &#8220;are they still going?&#8221; file. \u00a0The move to streaming has not been kind to bands like Lawson. \u00a0The first single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I-SOaSU0ieA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Roads&#8221;<\/a>,\u00a0over a year ago now, made it to number 11;\u00a0another three have since failed to make the top 100.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Blank Face LP&#8221; by Schoolboy Q<\/strong> at 36. \u00a0Follow-up to 2014&#8217;s &#8220;Oxymoron&#8221;, which got to 23. \u00a0This made the top 5 in New Zealand. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7iJDXIOk0bg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Groovy Tony&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It. \u00a0Will. \u00a0Not. \u00a0Die. 1. \u00a0Drake featuring WizKid &amp;
