5 August 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After\u00a0last week&#8217;s\u00a0exciting anticlimax, when Drake didn&#8217;t set a record after all, the\u00a0singles chart\u00a0has a nice lie down and a rest.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/a59gmGkq_pw\" target=\"_blank\">1. \u00a0Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber &amp; M\u00d8 &#8211; &#8220;Cold Water&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was miles ahead of everyone else last time, so it&#8217;s completely unsurprising that\u00a0&#8220;Cold Water&#8221;\u00a0gets a second week at number one. \u00a0Combined sales and streams\u00a0are actually slightly up. \u00a0It still doesn&#8217;t have a proper video, by the way, which means that we haven&#8217;t had a number one single with a video since April.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/q31tGyBJhRY\" target=\"_blank\">2. \u00a0Calum Scott &#8211; &#8220;Dancing On\u00a0My Own&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Four months out, and still climbing. \u00a0It&#8217;d be astonishing if he actually made it to number 1 after this length of time, but\u00a0it&#8217;s not impossible &#8211; Ed Sheeran&#8217;s &#8220;Thinking Out Loud&#8221; did it in week 19 in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZWCB3hpJDXM\" target=\"_blank\">13. \u00a0Bastille &#8211; &#8220;Good Grief&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is proving surprisingly persistent\u00a0as well &#8211; it&#8217;s still climbing (very, very slowly) after seven weeks on the chart. \u00a0Bastille seem to be a bit of an outlier in 2016,\u00a0as a somewhat-alternative\u00a0act whose records actually stick around and gain momentum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WUcXQ--yGWQ\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>15. \u00a0M\u00d8 &#8211; &#8220;Final Song&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another very slow burner, which has now moved 28-19-17-15. \u00a0It looks like the\u00a0spillover effect from\u00a0being on the\u00a0Major Lazer single is helping this track, instead of\u00a0overshadowing it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WY6b7bjMt1Q\" target=\"_blank\">18. \u00a0M O &#8211; &#8220;Who Do You Think Of&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Confusion\u00a0abounds as M\u00d8&#8217;s march up the chart is closely followed by the\u00a0entirely unrelated girl band M O. \u00a0This\u00a0has now gone 35-25-18,\u00a0so it may have more momentum in it yet. \u00a0The\u00a0record industry is still adjusting to a world in which entering at number 35 can be a\u00a0promising start for a\u00a0new act (or a newly promoted one, at least &#8211; this bunch have been around for years).<\/p>\n<p><strong>20. \u00a0Twenty One Pilots &#8211; &#8220;Heathens&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UprcpdwuwCg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s highest climber (from 34) is the single from the\u00a0<em>Suicide Squad<\/em> soundtrack album, which\u00a0entered at number 33 back in June,\u00a0dropped out of the top 40, and\u00a0naturally makes a resurgence as the film comes out. \u00a0\u00a0Clearly the advance promotion of\u00a0<em>Suicide Squad<\/em>\u00a0was a big success,\u00a0generating\u00a0enough interest to overcome largely\u00a0bad reviews. \u00a0That&#8217;s hardly surprising, since people who already want to see a film in its opening weekend are rarely put off by bad reviews\u00a0(good reviews\u00a0have more impact, I suspect), and it&#8217;s word of mouth that\u00a0makes more difference in the long run. \u00a0<em>Suicide Squad<\/em> had a\u00a0relatively big drop on Saturday, so that word of mouth might not be great.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway. \u00a0Twenty One Pilots have another single out at the moment, &#8220;Ride&#8221;, but\u00a0it\u00a0peaked at number 49 a few weeks back, overshadowed by the movie tie-in. \u00a0Their biggest UK hit remains &#8220;Stressed Out&#8221;, which got to number 12 in February.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9RBzsjga73s\" target=\"_blank\">21. \u00a0Christine &amp; The Queens &#8211; &#8220;Tilted&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up from 27. \u00a0It&#8217;s great, but I&#8217;d never have pegged this mid-tempo synthpop track as a slow burner in the current chart. \u00a0I wonder if we&#8217;re finally starting to see a bit more diversity in the streaming-era chart as people figure out how to promote for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/r3RXHOTMmLw\" target=\"_blank\">22. \u00a0Anne-Marie &#8211; &#8220;Alarm&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This entered at number 32 last week, so a ten-place climb is a good sign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0Charlie Puth featuring Selena Gomez &#8211; &#8220;We Don&#8217;t Talk Anymore&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3AtDnEC4zak\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is\u00a0making painfully slow progress up the chart, having moved 30-30-28-26. \u00a0It has a proper video now, which might help &#8211; though it doesn&#8217;t have Selena Gomez, and the split screen gimmick really does feel\u00a0like it was meant to have Selena Gomez. \u00a0Or maybe not, since the promotional strategy seems to be to pointedly dodge questions about\u00a0why Selena Gomez isn&#8217;t in the video, and indeed who the woman\u00a0taking her place actually is &#8211; the word &#8220;mystery&#8221; turns up in so many articles about the video that I&#8217;m guessing it was in the press release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey &#8211; &#8220;Closer&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PT2_F-1esPk\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s quick. \u00a0The\u00a0Chainsmokers&#8217; previous single &#8220;Don&#8217;t Let Me Down&#8221;\u00a0peaked at number 2 a few weeks ago, but it&#8217;s still in there at number 4. \u00a0Still, it&#8217;s been on the chart for 10 weeks, and the label evidently thinks it&#8217;s time to move on. \u00a0That video above is\u00a0officially a lyric video, by the way, but it&#8217;s from the school of lyric videos that&#8217;s had more money spent on it than most actual videos,\u00a0to the point where it\u00a0has a director credit at the start.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not as good as &#8220;Don&#8217;t Let Me Down&#8221;\u00a0&#8211; it&#8217;s lacking a decent vocal hook for a start &#8211; but it&#8217;s okay. \u00a0The male lead vocalist is actually Andrew Taggart, but he doesn&#8217;t get separate credit because he&#8217;s a member of the band already. \u00a0It&#8217;s the first time they&#8217;ve sung on one of their own hits.\u00a0\u00a0Halsey is the woman on the middle verse; she&#8217;s\u00a0been\u00a0in the top 40 before, as a\u00a0guest on Justin Bieber&#8217;s album track &#8220;The Feeling&#8221;, which got to number 34 last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Fifth Harmony featuring Fetty Wap &#8211; &#8220;All\u00a0In My Head (Flex)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jsbeemdD2rQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Their previous single &#8220;Work From Home&#8221; peaked at number 2 in April, and it&#8217;s still hanging around within the top 30. \u00a0Again,\u00a0the\u00a0record company has evidently decided that it&#8217;s time to move on, but this has been slow to take off, taking five weeks to climb into the top 40 from the lower reaches. \u00a0We established with the video for &#8220;Work From Home&#8221; that Fifth Harmony don&#8217;t do subtle,\u00a0and yup, this one ain&#8217;t subtle either. \u00a0Product placement for an app is a new one on me, though.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Viola Beach&#8221; by Viola Beach<\/strong> enters at 1. \u00a0This is the\u00a0band that\u00a0died in a car crash\u00a0while on tour in Sweden at the start of the year, and\u00a0had a posthumous number 11 hit on the singles chart with &#8220;Swings and Waterslides&#8221;. \u00a0This is a collection of their studio recordings, released with their families&#8217; blessing. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JN7jEzk7ocs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Boys That Sing&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Major Key&#8221; by DJ Khaled<\/strong> at 7. \u00a0This guy&#8217;s been having hits in the US for a decade but this is his first\u00a0appearance on the UK album chart. \u00a0The lead single &#8220;For Free&#8221; got to number 25 in June, but it&#8217;s not on YouTube, so here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SFLSOIufuhM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;I Got The Keys&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;For All We Know&#8221; by NAO<\/strong> at 17. \u00a0London soul singer, debut album. \u00a0She&#8217;s worked with Disclosure before. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/O07VR9Twdt8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Fool to Love&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Twenty&#8221; by Chicane<\/strong> at 40. \u00a0Yes, the producer. \u00a0The one that had a number 1\u00a0together with Bryan Adams in 2000. \u00a0He&#8217;s still going, and his\u00a0last three\u00a0albums also landed somewhere around here on the album chart. \u00a0This is his twentieth anniversary album, and it&#8217;s mostly\u00a0a greatest hits\/remix collection. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/w0ftvNlBGRg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Carry Me Home&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After\u00a0last week&#8217;s\u00a0exciting anticlimax, when Drake didn&#8217;t set a record after all, the\u00a0singles chart\u00a0has a nice lie down and a rest. 1. \u00a0Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber &amp;
