9 September 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why, this is almost like old times. \u00a0Six new entries! \u00a0We haven&#8217;t had that in ages. \u00a0The chart compilers will be relieved about\u00a0that. \u00a0It&#8217;s something to talk about in the press release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PT2_F-1esPk\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Chainsmokers featuring Halsey &#8211; &#8220;Closer&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not all good news for them. \u00a0&#8220;Closer&#8221; gets a second week at number 1. \u00a0That&#8217;s not the problem. \u00a0Two weeks is fine, especially since it&#8217;s still growing.\u00a0 The problem is that it heads\u00a0a completely static top 7,\u00a0and this is no longer all that unusual &#8211;\u00a0in muting the impact of\u00a0first-week fan sales, the streaming era\u00a0seems to be illustrating that commercial radio was right all along about just how\u00a0long it takes for the public to lose interest in a hit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RnBT9uUYb1w\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>10. \u00a0Martin Garrix &amp; Bebe Rexha &#8211; &#8220;In The Name of Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Up from 17, giving Garrix his fourth top 10 hit, and Rexha her second. \u00a0I think I said before that this was her first credit hit, but it turns out the Chart Company&#8217;s search engine has a glitch and doesn&#8217;t reliably pick up credited guest appearances. \u00a0She&#8217;s had two of those, one of which was on\u00a0Cash Cash&#8217;s 2014 hit &#8220;Take Me Home&#8221;. \u00a0(The other was on G-Eazy&#8217;s &#8220;Me, Myself and I&#8221; from the spring, which she overtakes this week.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-59jGD4WrmE\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>11. \u00a0Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons\u00a0with Logic, Ty Dolla $ign and X Ambassadors\u00a0&#8211; &#8220;Sucker for Pain&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back on the climb, having moved 28-16-13-13-11. \u00a0This is Lil Wayne&#8217;s biggest hit as a lead artist, though he&#8217;s been in the top 10 several times as a guest. \u00a0And since they&#8217;re given co-billing, it technically now\u00a0overtakes &#8220;Radioactive&#8221; to become Imagine Dragons&#8217; biggest hit too..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cAU7zsnH3Go\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>15. \u00a0Olly Murs &#8211; &#8220;You Don&#8217;t\u00a0Know Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A second rebound, and another new peak &#8211; this has moved 23-34-30-32-35-19-31-27-15. \u00a0This time, it&#8217;s because he performed on the\u00a0<em>Strictly Come Dancing<\/em> launch show, which caused a surge in sales (but not streams, which is why he isn&#8217;t in the top 10).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/W32HW5xj0bM\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>16. \u00a0Bob Marley featuring Lvndscape &amp; Bolier &#8211; &#8220;Is This Love (Remix)&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After six weeks hovering outside the top 40, this has taken off, moving 39-20-16.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pvP_OwVSFpk\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>19. \u00a0Ellie Goulding &#8211; &#8220;Still Falling For You&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rebounding after a one-place slip in its second week out. \u00a0It now overtakes\u00a0the number 20 peak of her previous single &#8220;Army&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>24. \u00a0Ariana Grande featuring Nicki Minaj &#8211; &#8220;Side to Side&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SXiSVQZLje8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This has been out\u00a0as an album track since June, but they&#8217;ve cut the price, which has helped sales enough to get it into the top 40. \u00a0(On the sales chart, it would\u00a0be in the top 10.) \u00a0Ariana Grande is one of those odd acts who can\u00a0regularly get her records into the middle of the chart but needs a high profile guest star to get\u00a0much beyond that. \u00a0Technically she has two number 1s to her name, but both of them had vastly bigger names attached, including (in the\u00a0case of &#8220;Bang Bang&#8221;) Nicki Minaj. \u00a0So\u00a0chances are Minaj is\u00a0a big part of the draw here too. \u00a0The song is perfectly serviceable pop reggae; the\u00a0video\u00a0is desperately unsubtle in a way that\u00a0usually feels a bit forced unless you&#8217;re, well, Nicki Minaj.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Zara Larsson &#8211; &#8220;Ain&#8217;t My Fault&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RP4W9rp5zVY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Probably the best of this week&#8217;s six new entries, though admittedly they&#8217;re a rather uninspiring and samey bunch. \u00a0Still, MNEK has a hand in this, and it&#8217;s got some swagger to it. \u00a0This is the lead single from her upcoming album, but it&#8217;s her fourth hit of the year, and her second as the lead artist. \u00a0The previous one, &#8220;Lush Life&#8221;, peaked at 3 and hung around the top 40 for 28 weeks. \u00a0This is charting in its first week, and without a video yet,\u00a0so we&#8217;re still in the early stages of promotion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>31. \u00a0Offaiah &#8211; &#8220;Trouble&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0ur7NitR654\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Decent enough house\u00a0record which has been pushed by Radio 1. \u00a0There doesn&#8217;t seem to be any information about this guy beyond the fact that he&#8217;s supposedly a producer from Argentina, but you should probably take\u00a0that sort of thing with a pinch of salt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>35. \u00a0Matoma &amp; Becky Hill &#8211; &#8220;False Alarm&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-DFApjlqANs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Bubbling under for a month now. \u00a0It&#8217;s the first\u00a0hit for Matoma; Hill had a number 1 in 2014 as the added singer on Oliver Heldens&#8217; &#8220;Gecko&#8221;. \u00a0This one is\u00a0made squarely\u00a0to\u00a0the 2016 template &#8211; bit tuneful, bit obvious, bit heartfelt, midpaced,\u00a0irritating noise used for the instrumental hook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Digital Farm Animals &amp; Cash Cash &#8211; &#8220;Millionaire&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_Z3Lw7aWQrg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is on Simon Cowell&#8217;s label, though it&#8217;s another of his rare attempts to diversify into actual pop. \u00a0Digital Farm Animals is a London producer; in one of those happy coincidences,\u00a0Cash Cash are the people I mentioned earlier on who worked with Bebe Rexha on &#8220;Take Me Home&#8221; (number 5 in 2014). \u00a0Nelly is on this as well, though for whatever reason the Chart Company aren&#8217;t currently giving him a credit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ErLWeurzzw8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>38. \u00a0Cheat Codes\u00a0&amp; Dante Klein &#8211; &#8220;Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On)&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0entered at 40 two weeks ago, and it&#8217;s now edging up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Mike Perry featuring Shy Martin &#8211; &#8220;The Ocean&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5JxgDJvqGmM\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Debut hit. \u00a0This was\u00a0a number 1 in Perry&#8217;s native Sweden. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0another very, very 2016 record.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart, it&#8217;s a busy week too.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Cartwheels&#8221; by Ward Thomas<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0The official line is that this is the first\u00a0number 1 album by a\u00a0British country act, though\u00a0you have to wonder quite what definition of &#8220;country&#8221; would cover this but not (say) Texas, who had two number 1s in\u00a0the 90s.\u00a0 Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/epzQAsNs1bo\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Carry You Home&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Nation&#8217;s Favourite Carpenters Songs&#8221; by the Carpenters<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0Greatest hits album spinning off an ITV special. \u00a0According to ITV, the Nation&#8217;s Favourite Carpenters Song is &#8220;Please Mr Postman&#8221; (number 2 in 1975), but I&#8217;m going to go with 1977&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/BsK2SIDLgyM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft&#8221;<\/a>, since\u00a0CBeebies use it in trailers. \u00a0Though\u00a0I suppose that was a cover, so&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Trick&#8221; by Jamie T<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0His fourth album; they&#8217;ve all landed between 2 and 4. \u00a0Single: &#8220;Power Over Men&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Growing Over Life&#8221; by Wretch 32<\/strong> at 5. \u00a0His second major label album; the last one got to 4. \u00a0(His 2008 independent release, &#8220;Wretchrospective&#8221;, has never charted.) \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KDhyOtsCMGk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Antwi&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Bad Vibrations&#8221; by A Day To Remember<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0Bit odd. \u00a0This is a\u00a0guitar band from Florida\u00a0who are on their sixth album, but they&#8217;ve never made the\u00a0album top 40 before. \u00a0Quite why they&#8217;re\u00a0suddenly making the top 10, I don&#8217;t know. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/aa9niVjcRI4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Naivety&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Foreverland&#8221; by The Divine Comedy<\/strong> at 7. \u00a0The first album to be released under the Divine Comedy name in six years, though\u00a0Hannon also put out a Duckworth Lewis Method album during\u00a0that time. \u00a0Remarkably, this is the highest chart placing for a Divine Comedy studio album, though their\u00a01999 greatest hits album got to number 3. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/S4V7WBq72Gg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Catherine the Great&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Familia&#8221; by Sophie Ellis-Bextor<\/strong> at 12. \u00a0She&#8217;s stopped having hit singles, but the albums are still doing okay. \u00a0The Wikipedia\u00a0article for this album\u00a0is three paragraphs long and still finds space for the information that the lead single was added to West Hull FM&#8217;s playlist on 1 August. \u00a0That single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-F8mEQsXVkQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Come With Us&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight&#8221; by Travis Scott<\/strong> at 19. \u00a0He&#8217;s on Kanye&#8217;s label. \u00a0Second major label release, doing slightly better than the last one. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/mZDinQ92OZQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Pick Up The Phone&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(NSFW.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Astronaut Meets Appleman&#8221; by King Creosote<\/strong> at 25. \u00a0Veteran songwriter who finally\u00a0reached the album chart (after 40+ releases) last time round. \u00a0Not a blip, apparently. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JCqXVTnGzgU\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;You Just Want&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A Moment of Madness&#8221; by Izzy Bizu<\/strong> at 28. \u00a0Soul singer who was on some of the people-to-watch-in-2016 lists. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OA_E6udchlM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Mad Behaviour&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Messenger of the Gods&#8221; by Freddie Mercury<\/strong> at 31. \u00a0A singles collection, celebrating what would have been his 70th birthday. \u00a0His two biggest solo hits were both posthumous\u00a0&#8211; the 1992 re-release of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/o8Eg-mWdDLc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Barcelona&#8221;<\/a> (which the BBC used as the Olympics theme that year), and the 1993\u00a0remix of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gYDWCe6n2_M\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Living On My Own&#8221;<\/a>, which reached number 1. \u00a0During his life, his biggest solo hit was his cover of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/mLRjFWDGs1g\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Great\u00a0Pretender&#8221;<\/a>, which reached number 4 in 1987.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Going Going&#8221;
