30 September 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, you wouldn&#8217;t have bet on this a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0James Arthur &#8211; &#8220;Say You Won&#8217;t Let Go&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0yW7w8F2TVA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is James Arthur&#8217;s second number one; the first was his\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> winners single <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Mhj15W23IjA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Impossible&#8221;<\/a>, and that was\u00a0back in 2012. \u00a0At the time, he seemed like one of the more\u00a0promising winners &#8211; &#8220;Impossible&#8221; is a\u00a0characteristically wretched production, but the actual vocal is quite decent. \u00a0He did release an album in 2013, which got to number 2 on the album chart,\u00a0spent a respectable three months in the top 40, and spawned a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lHjUuojffds\" target=\"_blank\">reasonably acceptable\u00a0number 2 single<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And then he cocked it all up\u00a0rather spectacularly in 2013, when he got into some ill-advised Twitter feuds, decided he wanted to try his hand at rap, and included some homophobic lyrics which\u00a0went down quite badly, to the point where iTunes started offering refunds on his album. \u00a0Simon Cowell&#8217;s label may not care about such things in\u00a0themselves, but it certainly does care about loose cannons\u00a0who don&#8217;t know when to stop talking. \u00a0In 2014 he got more\u00a0bad press for a\u00a0mixtape track called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sP1iG9_hH7U\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Follow the Leader&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0(which was\u00a0another of his deeply unfortunate rap efforts, though the press line that it was &#8220;glamorising terrorism&#8221; was perverse), and was shown the door.<\/p>\n<p>But a year later, Columbia picked him up, and this is his comeback single, which entered at 25 two weeks ago. \u00a0No rap is in evidence. \u00a0It sounds more like Ed Sheeran. \u00a0It&#8217;s a song about\u00a0growing old together. \u00a0It&#8217;s a\u00a0transparent bid to be seen as having matured, but then it\u00a0<em>has<\/em> been three years and he&#8217;s 28 now. \u00a0Evidently enough time has passed for him to be repackaged successfully, and\u00a0on its own terms,\u00a0the song itself is\u00a0fine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk &#8211; &#8220;Starboy&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/34Na4j8AVgA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An unusually high new entry for 2016. \u00a0It&#8217;s the lead single from the album of the same name, and it was released without prior warning last Thursday (giving it a day of sales that fell onto the previous week&#8217;s chart, but that doesn&#8217;t really matter given\u00a0the time\u00a0these things take to build). \u00a0It may go further, but for the moment it matches the number 3 peaks of &#8220;The Hills&#8221; and &#8220;Can&#8217;t Feel My Face&#8221; from last year.<\/p>\n<p>You wouldn&#8217;t guess that this was a Daft Punk track, but it gives them their first appearance on the singles chart since &#8220;Get Lucky&#8221; reached number 1 in the summer of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>And now, a parade of singles moving up very, very slightly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MGaEf0CZfbQ\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>4. \u00a0Calvin Harris &#8211; &#8220;My Way&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climbing\u00a0one place in its second week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RnBT9uUYb1w\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>9. \u00a0Martin Garrix &amp; Bebe Rexha &#8211; &#8220;In the Name of Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally edging further up, three weeks after it entered the top 10.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pvP_OwVSFpk\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>11. \u00a0Ellie Goulding &#8211; &#8220;Still Falling For You&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also edging up one place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23. \u00a0Zara Larsson &#8211; &#8220;Ain&#8217;t My Fault&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eC-F_VZ2T1c\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 3. \u00a0Truly an action packed chart this week. \u00a0But it does have a video at last! \u00a0They&#8217;ve&#8230; well, they&#8217;ve hired a country house, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-DFApjlqANs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>28. \u00a0Matoma\u00a0&amp; Becky Hill &#8211; &#8220;False Alarm&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climbing a mighty five places!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ErLWeurzzw8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>36. \u00a0Cheat Codes &amp; Dante Klein &#8211; &#8220;Let Me Hold You (Turn\u00a0Me On)&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another poster child for\u00a0sluggish chart\u00a0progress, this one has moved 40-43-38-39-38-36.<\/p>\n<p><strong>37. \u00a0Hailee Steinfeld &amp; Grey featuring Zedd &#8211; &#8220;Starving&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xwjwCFZpdns\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Up three. \u00a0But this one has a proper video too now. \u00a0(By the way, what on earth does &#8220;Don&#8217;t need no butterflies when you give me the whole damn zoo&#8221;\u00a0actually mean?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0Dua Lipa &#8211; &#8220;Blow Your\u00a0Mind (Mwah)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1nydxbGhgv8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ah, and here&#8217;s an actual new entry &#8211; well, a climber from 46, but it&#8217;s new to the top 40. \u00a0It&#8217;s the follow-up to &#8220;Hotter Than Hell&#8221;, which got to number 15 in July. \u00a0 Bit gimmicky, this one.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Young as the Morning Old as the Sea&#8221; by Passenger<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0Passenger is a one-hit wonder on the singles charts, thanks to 2013&#8217;s &#8220;Let Her Go&#8221;, but he&#8217;s still shifting albums. \u00a0This is his first number 1, but he&#8217;s made the top 5 twice before. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZAYZmIfHEiU\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Home&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Chapter and Verse&#8221; by\u00a0Bruce Springsteen<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0A compilation including some unreleased tracks. \u00a0Springsteen&#8217;s studio albums still regularly go to number 1, so this is hardly a surprise position.\u00a0 Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/myzqv3hTYNs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Growin&#8217; Up&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Illuminate&#8221; by Shawn Mendes<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0A rare overlap with the singles chart! \u00a0&#8220;Treat You Better&#8221; is still hanging in at number 13.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;F.E.A.R.&#8221; by Marillion<\/strong> at 4. \u00a0Another crowdfunded Marillion album. \u00a0The title stands for &#8220;Fuck Everyone and Run&#8221;. \u00a0Number 4 makes it their highest placing since &#8220;Clutching at Straws&#8221; got to number 2 in 1987.\u00a0 Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Xiwtl-ljUI0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The New Kings&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Breaking&#8217; Outta Hell&#8221; by Airbourne<\/strong> at 9. \u00a0Australian\u00a0rock throwbacks. \u00a0First time they&#8217;ve made the top 10, because that&#8217;s the\u00a0sort of audience that still buys albums. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gTYZWJEaOUA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Breakin&#8217; Outta Hell&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Black Parade \/ Living With Ghosts&#8221; by My\u00a0Chemical Romance<\/strong> at 11. \u00a0Anniversary reissue of the 2006 number 1, backed up with a second disc of demos and the like. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RRKJiM9Njr8\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Welcome to the Black Parade&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Heads Up&#8221; by Warpaint<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0Californian indie. \u00a0The previous album got to number 9, so not much change. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/K1BqwONm4TE\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Whiteout&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Live at the Greek Theatre&#8221; by Joe Bonamassa<\/strong> at 17. \u00a0Self-explanatory. \u00a0Sample track: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/dghT8X2kD30\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Oh, Pretty Woman&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Who Can I Be Now &#8211; 1974-1976&#8221; by David Bowie\u00a0<\/strong>at 21. \u00a0Considering it only covers three years, you might be surprised to learn that this is a\u00a0twelve CD, eight-and-a-half hour box set,\u00a0for the sort of David Bowie fan who aches to own the entirety of &#8220;Station to Station&#8221; in two different masters. \u00a0It does include an unreleased album that went on to be reworked into &#8220;Young Americans&#8221;, so that&#8217;s something.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Shine A Light &#8211; Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad&#8221; by Billy Bragg &amp; Joe Henry\u00a0<\/strong>at 28. \u00a0It&#8217;s a collection of cover versions of railroad songs recorded\u00a0on location at American railway stations. \u00a0Seriously. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GtlXwj80OWM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The L&amp;N Don&#8217;t Stop Here Anymore&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Rosetta&#8221;
