18 November 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Right, then&#8230; I <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span><\/em> get back to a regular schedule later this week, with\u00a0<em>Deadpool v Gambit\u00a0<\/em>finally getting that review, followed by\u00a0<em>Uncanny X-Men Annual\u00a0<\/em>and an\u00a0<em>Old Man Logan\u00a0<\/em>arc a bit later, and maybe a wrestling post (depending on whether I want to write about the show in question once I&#8217;ve, you know, actually seen it). \u00a0Meantime, let&#8217;s clear this one away: a\u00a0moribund\u00a0top half of the chart, but\u00a0a few more surprises lower down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/papuvlVeZg8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Clean Bandit &#8211; &#8220;Rockabye&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Second week. \u00a0It&#8217;s now number one in streaming as well as sales.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/b8m9zhNAgKs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>4. \u00a0Rae Sremmurd featuring Gucci Mane &#8211; &#8220;Black Beatles&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Blimey. \u00a0That&#8217;s a 28-place climb, which is quite something for a track\u00a0that was propelled into the charts as a\u00a0meme soundtrack (especially since it isn&#8217;t a novelty record).<\/p>\n<p><strong>23. \u00a0Nevada featuring Mark Morrison &amp; Fetty Wap &#8211; &#8220;The Mack&#8221;<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-cy78b9uvBs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, really, there&#8217;s nothing of any note whatsoever\u00a0between numbers 4 and 23. \u00a0Just what the Radio 1 producers love. \u00a0Anyway, this is our highest new entry and it&#8217;s essentially a remake of\u00a0Mark Morrison&#8217;s 1996 number 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/uB1D9wWxd2w\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Return of the Mack&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0Morrison was briefly the Next Big Thing, and\u00a0had five\u00a0top ten hits in 1996 and 1997 before flaring out; his last chart appearance was in 1999 when &#8220;Best Friend&#8221; managed a single week\u00a0at number 23. \u00a0Fetty Wap gets his fifth hit. \u00a0Nevada is a Swedish DJ, and\u00a0this is presumably his debut UK hit. \u00a0There\u00a0<em>was<\/em> a track called <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/l1qQp5tsgAs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dancin&#8217; Tonight&#8221;<\/a> credited to Stereopol featuring Nevada that reached number 36 in 2003, and Stereopol are definitely Swedish, but this Nevada says he&#8217;s 25, so unless he was having hits at the\u00a0age of 12, it&#8217;s a different guy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0Olly Murs &#8211; &#8220;Grow Up&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nuLLEhmpxJo\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This has taken its time &#8211; it&#8217;s been hovering outside the top 40 for five weeks &#8211; but I gather they cut the price. \u00a0It&#8217;s the usual middle of the road stuff from Murs, but it&#8217;s served him well. \u00a0The video is cute enough, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28. \u00a0Nathan Sykes &#8211; &#8220;Famous&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O3egSbLg1wg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Remember this guy? \u00a0He was in the Wanted. \u00a0He managed a week in the top ten last year with\u00a0&#8220;Over and Over Again&#8221;. \u00a0The album is finally out this week (see below). \u00a0He was on <em>X Factor\u00a0<\/em>to plug it, plus\u00a0they&#8217;ve cut the price. \u00a0This is a very retro\u00a0song which\u00a0takes its sweet time\u00a0to get going. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0not especially great, but it&#8217;s an interesting choice of single &#8211; partly because it&#8217;s so meandering, but also because of the oddity of giving a &#8220;will you still love me when I&#8217;m famous&#8221; song to this guy when there&#8217;s obviously a good chance\u00a0his fame peaked several years ago. \u00a0Deliberate attempt to re-frame him as a rising star, or just\u00a0strange?<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0Robbie\u00a0Williams &#8211; &#8220;Love My Life&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j4ggyO-OFXU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, I didn&#8217;t see that coming. \u00a0The first single from this album, &#8220;Party Like A Russian&#8221;, could only manage number 68. \u00a0But here&#8217;s Robbie, scraping back into the top 40\u00a0for the first time since 2013. \u00a0Again, there&#8217;s a price cut involved &#8211; this would be top ten in sales, but it&#8217;s absolutely nowhere to be seen on streams. \u00a0The song is a self-affirmation number &#8211; he&#8217;s powerful, he&#8217;s wonderful, you know the drill &#8211; which is perhaps more notable from coming from someone whose solo work has always had a distinct undertow of self-loathing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/a2v_zGWawP0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>37. \u00a0Zay Hilfigerrr &amp; Zayion McCall &#8211; &#8220;Juju On That Beat&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up three places. \u00a0The only other real climber this week (not counting a couple of small rebounds by records on their way out).<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0The xx &#8211; &#8220;On Hold&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1_oA9UmRd4I\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Really&#8230;?!? \u00a0The xx&#8217;s only previous appearance in the top 40 came in 2010 &#8211; the year they won the Mercury Prize &#8211; when &#8220;Islands&#8221; got to number 34. \u00a0This is the lead single from their third album, and while\u00a0it does seem like a pretty\u00a0radio-friendly number by their standard, it&#8217;s still a surprise to see them showing up in the UK singles chart in\u00a0a year when the\u00a0effects of streaming have largely screened out\u00a0the more niche records.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Sigma featuring Birdy &#8211; &#8220;Find Me&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ec92Wa8zJs8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The usual deal with Sigma &#8211; emotional ballad with stock drum and bass production. \u00a0The underlying song sounds like it really wants to be a Lana Del Rey track, but instead it&#8217;s got Sigma and Birdy, making her first appearance on the chart since &#8220;Wings&#8221; made the top 10 in 2013. \u00a0She released two other singles at the start\u00a0year, neither of which could get above 57, so a guest appearance seems like a reasonable move.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart, set the dial for Middle Of The Road:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;24 Hrs&#8221; by Olly Murs<\/strong> at number 1. \u00a0We&#8217;ve had the current single. \u00a0This is his fifth album and\u00a0his fourth number one. \u00a0(The other one got to 2.) \u00a0He&#8217;s a fixture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Long Live The Angels&#8221; by Emeli Sande<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0Slightly surprised that didn&#8217;t make number 1, but then the single &#8220;Hurts&#8221; couldn&#8217;t get above 22, and that\u00a0was odd too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Just&#8230; Fabulous Rock N&#8217; Roll&#8221; by Cliff Richard<\/strong> at 4. \u00a0Cliff covers classic\u00a050s rock, a definition which apparently includes <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/985tHD1Pw5w\" target=\"_blank\">his own 1958 debut &#8220;Move It&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0Cliff doesn&#8217;t make videos any more &#8211; let&#8217;s be blunt, his demographic is not on YouTube &#8211; but <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1LSGGBvMNWLYdKZIl8v1kr\" target=\"_blank\">the album is on Spotify<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Unfinished Business&#8221; by Nathan Sykes<\/strong> at 11. \u00a0See above. \u00a0This is Sykes&#8217; first album, even though his first\u00a0solo single came out more than a year ago now.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Legacy&#8221; by David Bowie<\/strong> at 13. \u00a0It&#8217;s a singles compilation. \u00a0Let&#8217;s see, which one shall I go for&#8230; let&#8217;s have <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CMThz7eQ6K0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Ashes to Ashes&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;57th and 9th&#8221; by Sting<\/strong> at 15. \u00a0That seems\u00a0very low for a new Sting album,\u00a0especially given\u00a0how much the album chart favours\u00a0the ageing legends. \u00a0This is billed as his first rock album in 13 years,\u00a0which in\u00a0practice means that it means it sounds\u00a0a lot like the Police. \u00a0He&#8217;s released plenty of albums during that time, most of which admittedly could not sensibly be described as rock music.\u00a0 Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RKyh2kYOdOk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;I Can&#8217;t Stop Thinking About You&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Acoustic&#8221; by Simple Minds<\/strong> at 16. \u00a0Speaks for itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Early Years &#8211; 1965-72&#8221; by Pink Floyd<\/strong> at 19. \u00a0Another Pink Floyd compilation album. \u00a0Here&#8217;s their 1967 top ten hit <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-YKBF0m9mTk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;See Emily Play&#8221;<\/a>, since\u00a0it has\u00a0a video. \u00a0I mean, a\u00a0<em>really terrible<\/em> one, but it&#8217;s a video.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;We Got It From Here &#8211; Thank U 4 Your Service&#8221; by A Tribe Called Quest<\/strong> at 24. \u00a0This is their highest placing album. \u00a0That sounds ridiculous, but there you go. \u00a0Single:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vO2Su3erRIA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;We The People&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Essential Leonard Cohen&#8221;<\/strong> re-enters at 26 following his death; just-released current album &#8220;You Want It Darker&#8221; rebounds to 7. \u00a0Let&#8217;s have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8IfmiKnZi3E\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Everybody Knows&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Fall Of A Rebel Angel&#8221; by Enigma<\/strong> at 40. \u00a0Yes,\u00a0the ones who did &#8220;Sadeness Part 1&#8221; in 1990. \u00a0Enigma haven&#8217;t troubled the UK album\u00a0top 40\u00a0with a new release since &#8220;The Screen Behind the Mirror&#8221; in 2000, though they kept releasing records with moderate international success through to 2008. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZYlNjQ5TTF4\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Amen&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Right, then&#8230;
