24 February 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By today&#8217;s standards, it&#8217;s a busy week!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JGwWNGJdvx8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Shape of You&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s seven weeks. \u00a0This seems like a\u00a0good time to\u00a0remind you that the previous number one was &#8220;Rockabye&#8221; by Clean Bandit, which lasted nine. \u00a0Anyway, it&#8217;s been seven weeks, so it feels like time for another single from the album&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;How Would You Feel (Paean)&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wY473jAptyw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->&#8230;and here it is! \u00a0This isn&#8217;t just any old &#8220;How Would You Feel&#8221;. \u00a0This is a\u00a0<em>paean<\/em>. \u00a0That&#8217;s a song of praise or triumph, by the way. \u00a0Although the\u00a0autocomplete prompt on YouTube was &#8220;How Would You Feel Pain&#8221;, so. \u00a0The song feels pretty middle of the road to me, but there&#8217;s no denying Sheeran&#8217;s\u00a0star\u00a0status.<\/p>\n<p>The other single, &#8220;Castle on the\u00a0Hill&#8221;, drops one place to 4 this week. \u00a0Oh, and\u00a0<em>this<\/em> week Sheeran released two new remixes of &#8220;Shape of You&#8221;, both of which also count\u00a0towards its chart position, and one of which he promoted on the Brit Awards &#8211; so an eighth week seems almost guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Katy Perry featuring Skip Marley &#8211; &#8220;Chained to the Rhythm&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Um7pMggPnug\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Up two places, and it&#8217;s got a video now. \u00a0It&#8217;s along the lines you&#8217;d expect &#8211; apparently, the visual signifiers for &#8220;we are all consumerised zombies&#8221; is the fifties with a dash of the eighties. \u00a0Like I said last week, this\u00a0feels way behind the moment\u00a0to me &#8211;\u00a0it&#8217;s been one of those handwavingly vague themes used for very mildly political pop for ages, half heartedly encouraging a sort of all purpose awareness without being particularly clear about what exactly we&#8217;re supposed to be aware\u00a0<em>of<\/em>, but at any rate it feels like yesterday&#8217;s concern to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Kygo &amp; Selena Gomez &#8211; &#8220;It Ain&#8217;t Me&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D5drYkLiLI8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Oh, now this is quite good. \u00a0It\u00a0feels very Eurovision to me, at least until it gets to the vocal cut-up stuff. \u00a0No\u00a0bad thing. \u00a0Kygo is a Danish producer and this is his second top ten hit, after &#8220;Firestone&#8221; reached number 8 last year. \u00a0Selena Gomez, as I&#8217;ve said before, is more written about than actually listened to in this country; her records\u00a0regularly make the top 40 but don&#8217;t often get this high. \u00a0This is only her third top ten hit, after 2013&#8217;s &#8220;Come and Get It&#8221;\u00a0and &#8211; still, remarkably, her\u00a0highest UK chart placing &#8211; &#8220;Naturally&#8221;, which made number 7 back in 2010 when she was still being billed as Selene Gomez &amp; The Scene.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Take That &#8211; &#8220;Giants&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.spotify.com\/?uri=spotify%3Atrack%3A1XuqhShERyGkjhYXJ94TxX\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The lead single from their next album. \u00a0This is still the three-piece version of Take That. \u00a0It&#8217;s serviceable but it doesn&#8217;t feel like one of their stronger\u00a0tracks. \u00a0It says a lot about the Take That audience that this managed to shift 12,000 copies on\u00a0CD single, a format you have to go out of your way to track down these days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yU6gG-p5FZc\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>20. \u00a0Rag&#8217;N&#8217;Bone Man &#8211; &#8220;Skin&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up another five, and slowly gathering pace.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZtePBKOhU9c\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>21. \u00a0Anne-Marie &#8211; &#8220;Ciao Adios&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up from 40 last week,\u00a0making it\u00a0the highest climber.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0The Chainsmokers &amp; Coldplay &#8211; &#8220;Something Just Like This&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FM7MFYoylVs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4u6bWs-ZG0o\" target=\"_blank\">Debuted at the Brit Awards on Wednesday<\/a>, so that&#8217;s quick. \u00a0First time I&#8217;ve seen a lyric video with a director credit at the start &#8211; the distinction between these things and proper videos continues to erode. \u00a0Not a collaboration that\u00a0that I&#8217;d have seen coming, to be honest, but it&#8217;s pretty much what you&#8217;d expect if you were told these two were going to work together &#8211; essentially what a Chainsmokers remix of a vaguely epic Coldplay song\u00a0might sound like.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2TtgkKZNTa8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>31. \u00a0James Arthur &#8211; &#8220;Safe Inside&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up five for a new peak in its third week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>32. \u00a0Maroon 5 featuring Future &#8211; &#8220;Cold&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XatXy6ZhKZw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Is there anything interesting to say about Maroon 5? \u00a0Nothing springs to mind. \u00a0Future is one of those rappers who&#8217;s been\u00a0around for years while somehow managing to avoid ever having a hit singles in the UK, even as a guest star. \u00a0He&#8217;s done okay on the\u00a0album charts, and his current self-titled album enters at 15 this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40. \u00a0Martin Jensen &#8211; &#8220;Solo Dance&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ginBV6aeVlc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Danish dance music. \u00a0This has been just outside the chart for a few weeks, and now scrapes in. \u00a0It&#8217;s his first hit. \u00a0The Wikipedia entry charmingly informs us that it has &#8220;reached the Bubbling Under charts in both areas of Belgium&#8221;, which seems an odd thing to single out, since it&#8217;s actually been a hit in most of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Human&#8221; by Rag&#8217;N&#8217;Bone Man<\/strong> has a second week at number 1.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Under Stars&#8221; by Amy Macdonald<\/strong> at 2. \u00a0Macdonald\u00a0had a couple of hit singles early in her career\u00a0before tailing off &#8211; 2010&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iRYvuS9OxdA\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;This Is The Life&#8221;<\/a> is probably the most memorable &#8211; but her albums continue to do well. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lcklCAsUCQM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dream On&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Prisoner&#8221; by Ryan Adams<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0That&#8217;s his highest chart place to date &#8211;\u00a0his\u00a0previous best was number 6 with a self-titled album in 2014, but\u00a0the 2015\u00a0album only managed 19, so&#8230; \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GzZ7HvSnDQo\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Do\u00a0You Still Love Me?&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Future&#8221; by Future<\/strong> at 15, which we&#8217;ve covered.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Dread Times&#8221; by Dreadzone<\/strong> at 39. \u00a0Hold on,\u00a0<em>that<\/em> Dreadzone? \u00a0The ones who had a hit with <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6lD_VIbgEZY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Little Britain&#8221;<\/a> in 1996? \u00a0Yes, and it&#8217;s\u00a0the first time they&#8217;ve\u00a0made the album chart since LB&#8217;s parent album &#8220;Second Light&#8221;
