{"id":3699,"date":"2017-03-14T22:04:28","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T22:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=3699"},"modified":"2017-03-14T22:04:28","modified_gmt":"2017-03-14T22:04:28","slug":"charts-10-march-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=3699","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 10 March 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Full Force Sheeran. \u00a0FFS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JGwWNGJdvx8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Shape of You&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s nine weeks, which matches the nine week run of\u00a0the record it replaced, Clean Bandit&#8217;s &#8220;Rockabye&#8221;. \u00a0So we&#8217;ve had a grand total of two number one singles in 18 weeks. \u00a0In itself that&#8217;s not unprecedented, but it&#8217;s tended to happen when one record stays at the top for months on end (like Drake&#8217;s &#8220;One Dance&#8221; last year). \u00a0Two records in a row, both with nine weeks&#8230; that&#8217;s not happened before.<\/p>\n<p>So. \u00a0Last week, we established that Stormzy can release an album and get six tracks into the top 40. \u00a0This week Ed Sheeran has his album \u00f7 out. \u00a0And Ed Sheeran is a bit more high profile than Stormzy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Galway Girl&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gL-WVjvzu34\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In fact, Ed Sheeran is a rather bigger deal\u00a0than\u00a0<em>anyone<\/em> right now. \u00a0In its first week on sale, \u00f7 outsells the rest of the albums Top 500 combined. \u00a0That&#8217;s not a typo. \u00a0Not the top 50. \u00a0The top\u00a0<em>five hundred<\/em>. \u00a0Granted that the albums market has been moribund for\u00a0ages, this\u00a0is still remarkable. \u00a0And of course, if you&#8217;re playing an album track in its own right, that registers for the singles chart. \u00a0So here begins the march of the Ed Sheeran album tracks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Galway Girl&#8221; is a hopelessly twee bit of Oirishness &#8211;\u00a0&#8220;She played a fiddle in an Irish band \/\u00a0But she fell in love with an Englishman&#8221; &#8211; which supposedly prompted some &#8220;Are you sure?&#8221; comments from the record label. \u00a0But it&#8217;s getting more play than anything else on the album, so Sheeran&#8217;s judgment is vindicated, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>Number 3 is also Ed Sheeran, with &#8220;Castle on the Hill&#8221; spending its ninth week in the top 5. \u00a0A clean sweep of the top three has happened before &#8211; Justin Bieber\u00a0managed it a couple of years back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Perfect&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1UQzJfsT2eo\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But nobody has ever managed a clean sweep of the top 4 before. \u00a0In fact,\u00a0four\u00a0simultaneous top ten hits is enough to match the all-time record held by Frankie Laine, which has stood serenely unchallenged since 1953.<\/p>\n<p>This one is maudlin throwback balladry. Bit surprised it&#8217;s\u00a0doing so well. \u00a0(And before you ask, no,\u00a0it&#8217;s not driven by the running order of the album. \u00a0This is track 5.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;New Man&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EwzD8U4u76k\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve got a new boyfriend and Ed doesn&#8217;t like him much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Happier&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8TpcBDJZsJA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve still got a new boyfriend and\u00a0Ed is sad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Dive&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wv2rLZmbPMA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ha! \u00a0Yes! \u00a0Number eight! \u00a0Not number seven! \u00a0That&#8217;s the Chainsmokers and Coldplay! \u00a0And now, more Ed Sheeran. \u00a0It&#8217;s another retro love song. \u00a0He&#8217;s going to dive right into you. \u00a0Which sounds painful, but I&#8217;m sure he knows what he&#8217;s doing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Supermarket Flowers&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bIB8EWqCPrQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This one is about his grandmother dying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;What Do I Know&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6B9J3lEyffA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We could change this whole world with a piano&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0It&#8217;s one of those &#8220;let&#8217;s make the world a better place by\u00a0singing songs about how that would be nice&#8221; songs. \u00a0It&#8217;s quite bad. \u00a0&#8220;We could change this whole world with a piano&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0That kind of thing.<\/p>\n<p>Number 11 is the other existing Ed Sheeran single, &#8220;How Would You Feel (Paean)&#8221;, and&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211;\u00a0&#8220;Barcelona&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OVO4LhrOFiY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t even on the regular version of the album. It&#8217;s one of four tracks which are only on the Deluxe Edition, though quite what that\u00a0<em>means<\/em> given that it&#8217;s the\u00a0Deluxe Version that&#8217;s on Spotify, I&#8217;m not sure. In this song, Ed Sheeran has gone on holiday to Barcelona and quite liked it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Nancy Mulligan&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VFlZXlfda6Y\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Trad and twee. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0folk song about his actual Irish grandparents, who were from different communities &#8211; though that pretty much boils down\u00a0here to &#8220;She and I went on the run \/ Don&#8217;t care about religion&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Eraser&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OjGrcJ4lZCc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This album&#8217;s rap track; being a pop star is hard. \u00a0So that&#8217;s thirteen Ed Sheeran tracks\u00a0&#8211; which matches the previous record for the most tracks by a single artist on the top 40. \u00a0The\u00a0previous record holder was Michael Jackson,\u00a0in the week after he died.<\/p>\n<p>But we&#8217;re not finished.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Hearts Don&#8217;t Break Around Here&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/20pAJPNaAyw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another love song. \u00a0He feels safe with his woman.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Bibia Be Ye Ye&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eQlveAt9e88\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ed does\u00a0<em>Graceland<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &#8211; &#8220;Save Myself&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qXM0JdAwabU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s the entire album. \u00a0All sixteen tracks on the singles chart at once. \u00a0New record.<\/p>\n<p>Um. \u00a0He&#8217;s broken the chart.<\/p>\n<p>Quite honestly, Ed Sheeran is in a different league of stardom and\u00a0his album release is an event that nobody else can match. \u00a0We&#8217;ve had albums flood the charts before, but\u00a0we&#8217;ve never had them\u00a0swamp the top end like this. \u00a0And in the past the non-singles have vanished after a week. \u00a0The midweek chart update,\u00a0released today, suggests that\u00a0the Hordes Of Ed will be sticking around. \u00a0This is very much a streaming phenomenon; the pure sales chart looks nothing like this.<\/p>\n<p>Inevitably, this is going to renew arguments about whether the\u00a0current chart rules need revised. \u00a0I&#8217;m not generally sympathetic to the idea of messing about with the rules to engineer the narrative you want. \u00a0If the public really is listening to Ed Sheeran to the exclusion of all else, then heck, that&#8217;s what the charts should show. \u00a0But then again,\u00a0when the entire album is registering this high, you do wonder whether there&#8217;s a case for reallocating a lot of those plays to the album chart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ginBV6aeVlc\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>25. \u00a0Martin Jensen &#8211; &#8220;Solo Dance&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Climbing 14 places in its third week, which is especially impressive considering the flood of 13 new entries above it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28. \u00a0Lorde &#8211; &#8220;Green Light&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dMK_npDG12Q\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hooray! \u00a0Somebody who isn&#8217;t Ed Sheeran! \u00a0You\u00a0remember Lorde &#8211; she had a number 1 with &#8220;Royals&#8221; in 2013.\u00a0\u00a0She&#8217;s not technically a one hit wonder &#8211; a follow-up &#8220;Team&#8221; got to number 29 the following year &#8211; but this is the first time we&#8217;ve seen her since then. \u00a0It\u00a0turns into a bit of an eighties epic, which I wasn&#8217;t expecting. \u00a0Thumbs up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Little Mix &#8211; &#8220;No More Sad Songs&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.spotify.com\/?uri=spotify%3Atrack%3A5ZnJsoJGkQ5K15W7Rcr5JO\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The next Little Mix\u00a0single, which doesn&#8217;t have a video yet. \u00a0The single version\u00a0has Machine Gun Kelly, guesting, but so far\u00a0the charts are sticking with the\u00a0album credit. \u00a0Little Mix&#8217;s previous single &#8220;Touch&#8221; is still hanging around at 29.<\/p>\n<p>Text<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00f7 by Ed Sheeran<\/strong> is number 1,\u00a0<em>obviously<\/em>. \u00a0The previous albums x and +\u00a0are at 4 and 5 respectively.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Windy City&#8221; by Alison Krauss<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0It&#8217;s a covers album. \u00a0Her highest solo chart placing, though she got to number 2 in 2007 in collaboration with Robert Plant.\u00a0 Sample track: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6o_HEIxpMII\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Losing You&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Home&#8221; by Collabro<\/strong> at 7. \u00a0Simon Cowell&#8217;s musical theatre boy band are back, just in time for Mother&#8217;s Day!
