19 May 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a quiet week. \u00a0Honestly, you might want to try the podcast, one post down. \u00a0But anyway&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kJQP7kiw5Fk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>1. \u00a0Luis Fonsi &amp; Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber &#8211; &#8220;Despacito&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two weeks. \u00a0Not much more to be said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A7xzXDStQnk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>4. \u00a0Shawn Mendes &#8211; &#8220;There&#8217;s Nothing Holdin&#8217; Me Back&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up one place. \u00a0Did I mention last week that it&#8217;s overtaken &#8220;Treat You Better&#8221;\u00a0to become his second-biggest hit? \u00a0Well, it has.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Harry Styles &#8211; &#8220;Sign of the Times&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qN4ooNx77u0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This was number 1 five weeks ago, but it rebounds from 10 this week, which is at least mildly noteworthy. \u00a0It has a video now, but the main reason for the second wind is the promotion for the album release (of which more later).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3rk6_Ax0mQo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>9. \u00a0J Hus &#8211; &#8220;Did You See&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up another three, giving him his first top ten hit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0Miley Cyrus &#8211; &#8220;Malibu&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8j9zMok6two\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s highest new entry is the first time we&#8217;ve seen Miley Cyrus in the\u00a0singles chart since 2014. \u00a0She did release an album in 2015 &#8211;\u00a0&#8220;Miley Cyrus &amp; Her Dead Petz&#8221; &#8211; which was a sprawling\u00a092-minute piece of experimentation with the involvement of the Flaming Lips. \u00a0But it had\u00a0no actual singles, even though a few tracks had videos &#8211; some\u00a0decidely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DfwJA0f0UTg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">questionable<\/a>\u00a0(though there was also a relatively normal one\u00a0for <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RNRVWSICNGQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Lighter&#8221;<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>From the look of it, &#8220;Dead Petz&#8221; finally burned\u00a0through her phase of distancing herself from Disney, as &#8220;Malibu&#8221; is a\u00a0surprisingly normal record &#8211; a bid for adult-ish credibility with a vaguely\u00a0country-ish soft rock song. \u00a0It&#8217;s notable more for the contrast with earlier Miley Cyrus tracks than for its inherent\u00a0qualities, but it&#8217;s not bad.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nfs8NYg7yQM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>12. \u00a0Charlie Puth &#8211; &#8220;Attention&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up four and still of no particular interest to me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z_1WcUAcbgQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>15. \u00a0Disciples &#8211; &#8220;On My Mind&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up eight, and apparently gaining momentum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21. \u00a0Maggie Lindeman &#8211; &#8220;Pretty Girl&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WEFJnYMz0Ec\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Chart debut. \u00a0Maggie Lindeman is a teenager from LA whose social media following &#8211; 2 million followers on Instagram &#8211; has yet to translate into any chart success\u00a0in the USA, but has sent this track to the top ten in Scandinavia. \u00a0It&#8217;s a more-than-just-a-pretty-face song, naturally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qPTfXwPf_HM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>22. \u00a0Jonas Blue featuring William Singe &#8211; &#8220;Mama&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up seven.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5XK4v2fgMPU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>33. \u00a0Kyle featuring Lil Yachty &#8211; &#8220;iSpy&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up seven. \u00a0Can&#8217;t say I was expecting this one to go climb, but there we are.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AEB6ibtdPZc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>34. \u00a0Paramore &#8211; &#8220;Hard Times&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Re-entry thanks to the album release. \u00a0It matches the original peak.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Harry Styles&#8221; by Harry Styles<\/strong> debuts at 1. \u00a0See above for the single. \u00a0He&#8217;s previously had four number one albums as a member of One Direction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;After Laughter&#8221; by Paramore<\/strong>\u00a0at 4. \u00a0And again, I&#8217;ve already mentioned\u00a0the single. \u00a0This is their third top ten album;\u00a02009&#8217;s &#8220;Brand New Eyes&#8221; and 2013&#8217;s &#8220;Paramore&#8221; both made number one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A Kind Revolution&#8221; by Paul Weller<\/strong> at 5. \u00a0Weller&#8217;s studio albums routinely make the top\u00a0ten, so this is no surprise. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tVV68PLuA8E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Long Long Road&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Common Sense&#8221; by J Hus<\/strong> at 6. \u00a0Debut album, and once again, I&#8217;ve mentioned the single already. \u00a0It&#8217;s an unusually heavy week for\u00a0crossover between the single and album charts, which\u00a0have often\u00a0existed in parallel universes outside the mega-releases like Ed Sheeran.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Send Away the Tigers&#8221; by the Manic Street Preachers<\/strong> at 21, a tenth anniversary re-issue of the\u00a0album that reached number 2 in 2007. \u00a0The biggest hit from this album was <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/A_OnFHJou4o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Your Love Alone Is Not Enough&#8221;<\/a>, which reached number 2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;II&#8221; by Inglorious<\/strong> at 22. \u00a0Retro rock. \u00a0The frontman used to be in Trans-Siberian Orchestra. \u00a0It&#8217;s their\u00a0top 40\u00a0debut (the self-titled debut made number 45 last year). \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nSNZaHJVZcw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Taking the Blame&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Welcome Home&#8221; by the Zac Brown Band<\/strong> at 25. \u00a0They&#8217;re a pretty big deal in the US country charts. \u00a0That&#8217;s not usually a recipe for success in the UK. \u00a0Their\u00a0previous album made number 36, so this is a step up. \u00a0The single <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JLDEHOuodQ0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Roots&#8221;<\/a> is an inoffensive\u00a0cliche fest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0<em>Dreamgirls<\/em> Original London Cast Recording<\/strong> at 36. \u00a0Self-explanatory. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cbrczKspi4o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">version of &#8220;Listen&#8221; from\u00a0Radio 2<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Bloom&#8221; by Machine Gun\u00a0Kelly<\/strong> at 37. \u00a0The single &#8220;Bad Things&#8221; made number 16\u00a0back in January.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a quiet week. \u00a0Honestly, you might want to try the podcast, one post down. \u00a0But anyway&#8230;
