23 June 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00a0<em>will<\/em> start catching up on the reviews. \u00a0Honest. \u00a0And there are some chart rule changes coming up, but we&#8217;ll cover those next week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Artists for Grenfell &#8211; &#8220;Bridge Over Troubled Water&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8O1CcwYf79I\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This is a rush-release charity single following the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grenfell_Tower_fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grenfell Tower fire<\/a>. \u00a0The single came out on a Wednesday, so it makes number one on the strength of two days&#8217; sales. \u00a0And I use the word &#8220;sales&#8221; advisedly &#8211; the track\u00a0<em>is<\/em> available for streaming, but its\u00a0actual sales were just under 169,000, and the streaming points brought the total to 170,360. \u00a0This is\u00a0fairly typical for charity releases,\u00a0which remain\u00a0essentially a\u00a0purchase format.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a Simon Cowell production, and given\u00a0that the response to this disaster has been more than usually politicised, I did wonder whether that was\u00a0going to be in line with the national mood. \u00a0Evidently it is. \u00a0It is (obviously) a cover of the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4G-YQA_bsOU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simon &amp; Garfunkel track<\/a> which was number 1 in 1970, in the familiar &#8220;one line per\u00a0star&#8221; format. \u00a0There&#8217;s some rapping as well, and Stormzy&#8217;s opening segment has been well received.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bridge Over Troubled Water&#8221; was also covered\u00a0by the Lewisham &amp; Greenwich NHS Choir in their\u00a02015 Christmas number one <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/T8qHXlShfUQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;A Bridge\u00a0Over You&#8221;<\/a> (a\u00a0medley with Coldplay&#8217;s &#8220;Fix You&#8221;), and it&#8217;s also charted twice in dance versions &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fkeNhB-QmXI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">once for Linda Clifford in 1979<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/IesnRHPBXhM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">once\u00a0for\u00a0PJB featuring Hannah &amp; Her Sisters in 1991<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0DJ Khaled featuring Rihanna &amp; Bryson Tiller &#8211; &#8220;Wild Thoughts&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fyaI4-5849w\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If this sounds familiar, it&#8217;s because it&#8217;s heavily recycled from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nPLV7lGbmT4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Maria Maria&#8221; by Santana<\/a>\u00a0(number 6 in 2000). \u00a0DJ Khaled&#8217;s previous single &#8220;I&#8217;m the One&#8221; is still\u00a0at number 9, but it&#8217;s been in the top ten for two months, so you can\u00a0see why they&#8217;re moving on with the album promotion.\u00a0\u00a0Rihanna makes her first\u00a0top 40\u00a0appearance of 2017 and Bryson Tiller\u00a0is charting for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dw8B1q1tKgs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>&#8220;Power&#8221; by Little Mix<\/strong><\/a> climbs\u00a0three places to 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0Rita Ora &#8211; &#8220;Your Song&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RsELrcVNzG0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This entered at 13 three week ago and drifted down to 15, before rebounding. \u00a0It&#8217;s got a video now. \u00a0Quite a good one, in fact &#8211; the backwards footage is quite subtly\u00a0used. \u00a0This one is growing on me.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NlrYn_dZdqk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Crying in the Club&#8221; by Camila Cabello<\/a><\/strong> climbs three places to 20.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21. \u00a0Calvin Harris featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry &amp; Big Sean &#8211; &#8220;Feels&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/6BaCraQ9xeLYg4Sb9TBT2X\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One last single before the release of the parent album at the end of the month. \u00a0It&#8217;s called\u00a0&#8220;Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1&#8221;. \u00a0I know. \u00a0Still, he really has broken from his formula, even if it&#8217;s mainly\u00a0to embrace somebody else&#8217;s.\u00a0Surprisingly, this is the highest chart position Pharrell Williams has reached since &#8220;Happy&#8221;\u00a0at the start of 2014. \u00a0Big Sean has never had a hit single under his own power in the UK but\u00a0he shows up regularly as a collaborator; this is his highest position since Jessie J&#8217;s &#8220;Wild&#8221;\u00a0in mid-2013.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Uq8fE3kKIBk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>&#8220;Came Here for Love&#8221; by Sigala featuring Ella Eyre&#8221; <\/strong><\/a>moves 26-23;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DumuyU6SuaQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>&#8220;Know No Better&#8221; by Major Lazer featuring\u00a0Travis Scott, Camila Cabello &amp; Quavo<\/strong><\/a> is 35-31.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0Selena Gomez &#8211; &#8220;Bad Liar&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NZKXkD6EgBk\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the one that samples &#8220;Psycho Killer&#8221;. \u00a0It entered at 35 a few weeks ago and dropped straight out, but the release of the video seems to have helped it back. \u00a0I can&#8217;t say I\u00a0care much for the video, which feels\u00a0too full of whimsical distractions from a\u00a0song that needs something more brittle and minimal. \u00a0Honestly, even though I&#8217;ve embedded the video above,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YVtzQms7lps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you&#8217;re better off with the still photo version<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Thunder&#8221; by Imagine Dragons<\/strong> moves 38-36, and that&#8217;s the singles chart.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;How Did We Get So Dark&#8221; by Royal Blood<\/strong> at 1. \u00a0Second album, second number one. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZSznpyG9CHY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Lights Out&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Feed The Machine&#8221; by Nickelback<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0Nickelback haven&#8217;t had a hit single since 2008 but\u00a0they&#8217;ve graduated into the album senior tour. \u00a0But this\u00a0is actually their highest chart position since 2010 &#8211; normally they float around the bottom end of the top 10. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qFzTdmZywK8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Song on Fire&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Melodrama&#8221; by Lorde<\/strong> at 5. \u00a0The previous album, &#8220;Pure Heroine&#8221;, got to 4, so a gap of more than three years seems to have made little difference. \u00a0The single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dMK_npDG12Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Green Light&#8221;<\/a> got to number 20 in March.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Crack-Up&#8221; by Fleet Foxes<\/strong> at 9. \u00a0Their third top ten album. \u00a0Hyper-retro single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/X5hMBxYqq5c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Fool&#8217;s Errand&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0The video is downright odd.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Weather Diaries&#8221; by Ride<\/strong> at 11. \u00a0Reunion album &#8211; their last studio release was &#8220;Tarantula&#8221; in 1996. \u00a0Ride did actually have a top ten hit back in the day, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4Tp0pqNRCOQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Leave Them All Behind&#8221;<\/a> managing a week at\u00a0number 9 in 1992 (um, before plunging out of the top 40 in a fortnight).\u00a0 Single: &#8220;All\u00a0I Want&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Other&#8221; by Alison Moyet<\/strong> at 12. \u00a0Her twelfth top 40 album, though there are a few compilations in there. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PNuzHQxDBfE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Reassuring Pinches&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Nashville Sound&#8221; by Jason Isbell &amp; The 400 Unit<\/strong> at 26. \u00a0The title speaks for itself. \u00a0Isbell\u00a0charted solo\u00a0in 2015, and he&#8217;s also a former member of the Drive-By Truckers &#8211;
