credits don’t count towards the cap), and tracks which have been out for ten weeks and are comfortably past their peak will see their streams downweighted to stop them clogging up the charts just because the same people have still got them on playlists. Does it make a difference? Well… a bit.

1. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber – Big Sean – “Feels”

This spent the last two weeks at number 21, but it’s got a video now. It’s also the week of release for the parent album, “Funk Wav Bounces – Vol 1”, which enters the album chart at number 2. As the improbable title suggests, Calvin Harris is trying his hand at a bit of funk. At least it’s a change from his formula, which was starting to ossify. The singles thus far have slightly underperformed; this is the highest that any of them have managed. Harris hasn’t been this high since non-album single “My Way” got to number 4 last year.

Pharrell Williams returns to the top 10 for the first time since “Happy” at the start of 2014, and Big Sean hasn’t been here since guesting on Jessie J’s “Wild” the year before. Katy Perry – well, she had “Chained to the Rhythm” back in March.

And now, a bunch of minor climbers. “Your Song” by Rita Ora climbs three places to number 7, which is nice, because it’s a good song. “Power” by Imagine Dragons goes 26-21. It’s possible some of this is a result of a bit of dead wood being cleared out, but the climbs are not huge.

So what did get affected by the new rule? Ed Sheeran was already down to three tracks in the top 40; all are caught by the downweighting rule and all naturally suffer drops, but only one actually drops past 40 as a result. Clean Bandit’s “Symphony”, which was number 1 back in May and was still clogging up the top 20, drops ten places, but it’s still around. So it’s not that drastic.

There are five new entries this week, plus one re-entry – we’ll come to them. The six tracks which left the top 40 to make room for them are “Smile for Bradley” by Liv’n’G (last week’s 28), “Castle on the Hill” by Kendrick Lamar (40). The Liv’n’G charity single drops straight out of the top 100 in its second week on release, and that’s nothing to do with the rule changes. The other five have been hit by the downweighting rule, but most of them are indeed lingering long beyond their peak – “Mask Off” is the exception, since it peaked about a month ago after a very slow burn climb.

24. Rudimental featuring James Arthur – “Sun Comes Up”

This is a slightly odd collaboration, between the ex-X-Factor balladeer and the drum and bass outfit (who have now found the tropical house samples). It’s a better fit than you might think, to be fair. Rudimental were last in the chart two years ago when they were collaborating with Ed Sheeran, but who wasn’t? James Arthur had a number 1 last year with his comeback “Say You Won’t Let Go”, but the follow-ups didn’t do so well, so it may be relaunch time again.

“Bad Liar”
