14 July 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If the recent rule changes were intended to speed up the chart,\u00a0then\u00a0it doesn&#8217;t seem to be working yet&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kJQP7kiw5Fk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>1. \u00a0Luis Fonsi &amp; Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber &#8211; &#8220;Despacito&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a total of nine weeks at number one. \u00a0I mean,\u00a0it&#8217;s not\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0been long-running number ones lately. \u00a0This year has seen four single-week number ones:\u00a0Harry Styles, Clean Bandit, DJ Khaled and Artists For Grenfell. \u00a0But\u00a0juggernauts like this are becoming a regular feature. \u00a0&#8220;Despacito&#8221;\u00a0<em>has<\/em> peaked, so it&#8217;s possible that the new rule (which downgrades the streams\u00a0of records\u00a0at least ten weeks old and at least three weeks past\u00a0their peak) will kick in while it&#8217;s still at number one. \u00a0If so, it may not be here much\u00a0longer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ozv4q2ov3Mk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>&#8220;Feels&#8221; by\u00a0Calvin Harris featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry &amp; Big Sean<\/strong><\/a> climbs to 4. \u00a0That&#8217;s enough to overtake &#8220;Chained To The Rhythm&#8221; and make it\u00a0Katy Perry&#8217;s biggest hit since &#8220;Dark Horse&#8221;\u00a0back in 2013. \u00a0It&#8217;s also Big Sean&#8217;s biggest hit ever, overtaking his\u00a0guest appearance on Jessie J&#8217;s &#8220;Wild&#8221;, also back in 2013. \u00a0Further down the chart, the previous single &#8220;Slide&#8221; rebounds 33-21, which strangely makes it this week&#8217;s higher climber. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Uq8fE3kKIBk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>&#8220;Came Here For Love&#8221; by Sigala &amp; Ella Eyre<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0moves 12-6. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NlrYn_dZdqk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>&#8220;Crying In The Club&#8221; by Camilla Cabello<\/strong><\/a> moves 16-14.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18. \u00a0Rudimental featuring James Arthur &#8211; &#8220;Sun Comes Up&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ts0znVDdzbw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This isn&#8217;t especially newsworthy &#8211; it climbs 24-18 in its second week on chart &#8211; but hey, it&#8217;s got a lyric video now, which is something. \u00a0Remember when all lyric videos looked like this? \u00a0You know, basically just showing the lyrics? \u00a0Seems quaint now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19. \u00a0Major Lazer featuring Travis Scott, Camila Cabello &amp; Quavo &#8211; &#8220;Know No Better&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sgp0WDMH88g\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another climber &#8211; 26-19 &#8211; but it too has now got\u00a0a video. \u00a0 It&#8217;s a &#8220;kid daydreams of better life&#8221; job, but it&#8217;s very well edited.<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0Zedd featuring Liam Payne &#8211; &#8220;Get Low&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cSX0-MP6tjw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At long last, this week&#8217;s highest new entry &#8211; outside the top 20. \u00a0I assume this is a placeholder video, though it&#8217;s quite a\u00a0decent one. \u00a0It&#8217;s bouncy and catchy enough,\u00a0though Zedd is telling interviewers that he thinks it sounds like Drake, and well, not seeing it. \u00a0Liam Payne, once of One Direction, gets his second\u00a0solo hit after his own &#8220;Strip That Down&#8221;, which peaked at number 3 and is still in the top 10.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/w6DukrYK5wQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>&#8220;Chasing Highs&#8221; by Alma<\/strong><\/a> climbs 30-28, and then we get something a bit more notable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Kesha &#8211; &#8220;Praying&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v-Dur3uXXCQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kesha Sebert\u00a0first charted back in 2009,\u00a0and while her number one debut was really\u00a0a false start (she&#8217;s a credited guest vocalist on\u00a0Flo Rida&#8217;s &#8220;Right Round&#8221;, but she\u00a0had no part\u00a0in promoting the record, and somebody else lip-synchs her part in the video),\u00a0she had a string of\u00a0top ten hits in\u00a02009-12 built around\u00a0a semi-ironically exaggerated party girl persona. \u00a0Those singles\u00a0are less about singing and more about selling the character; 2012&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NOubzHCUt48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Die Young&#8221;<\/a> is the best of the bunch, but <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iP6XpLQM2Cs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Tik Tok&#8221;<\/a> is the\u00a0archetype.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0was last in the chart in 2014, as the\u00a0guest on Pitbull&#8217;s number 1 &#8220;Timber&#8221;; she\u00a0hasn&#8217;t charted in her own right since\u00a02013. \u00a0That four year gap\u00a0has been\u00a0spent locked in litigation with her longtime\u00a0producer Dr Luke, which has been something of a cause celebre. \u00a0I tread carefully in talking about litigation that I haven&#8217;t been following closely and that involves very serious allegations\u00a0&#8211; this is territory where you don&#8217;t want to misstate what was alleged or what has been decided. \u00a0As it stands, she&#8217;s\u00a0still stuck on the Sony-affiliated\u00a0Kemosabe label, but Dr Luke has no apparent role in this release (and hasn&#8217;t been CEO of the label for several months).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Praying&#8221;\u00a0is\u00a0unlike\u00a0any of\u00a0her previous singles, naturally enough. \u00a0Anything she released in these\u00a0circumstances would inevitably be seen as a statement, and this song is clearly intended to be taken as such, even before you\u00a0add the first minute of the video. \u00a0Interestingly,\u00a0a video has already appeared for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lXyA4MXKIKo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">another\u00a0album track, &#8220;Woman&#8221;<\/a>, which is rather closer to her past output and\u00a0might be a\u00a0move to ensure that her comeback is not\u00a0<em>entirely<\/em> about the ongoing legal saga.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Congratulations&#8221; by Post Malone &amp; Quavo<\/strong> climbs 39-34,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Most Girls&#8221; by Hailee Steinfeld<\/strong> moves 40-37.<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0Jax Jones featuring Demi Lovato &amp; Stefflon Don &#8211; &#8220;Instruction&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TFj_hPjsBvE\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not quite sure how\u00a0Demi Lovato has wound up doing fairly anonymous vocals on a dance track &#8211; you&#8217;d think this was a bit below her pay grade &#8211; but\u00a0I do like the samba stuff. \u00a0It&#8217;s the first top 40 appearance for rapper Stefflon Don.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;\u00f7&#8221; by Ed Sheeran<\/strong> is still number 1, because the sun has not yet plunged\u00a0into the ocean, and it will be number\u00a01 until then. \u00a0Fourteen weeks and counting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Something to Tell You&#8221; by Haim<\/strong> is 2. \u00a0Four years since the previous album, so that&#8217;s not bad. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yPQfcG-eimk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Want You Back&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0(Great video.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;4:44&#8221; by Jay-Z<\/strong> at 3. \u00a0Oddly,\u00a0the only Jay-Z album to reach number 1 was 2013&#8217;s &#8220;Magna Carta Holy Grail&#8221;. \u00a0A bit surprising to see him come in behind Haim (it&#8217;s not due to the first week exclusivity with Tidal &#8211; that was the previous\u00a0week, when he didn&#8217;t chart, because the Tidal user base is too small to be relevant). \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MOcdhQ9KfJA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;4:44&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Every Valley&#8221; by Public Service Broadcasting<\/strong> at 4. \u00a0That&#8217;s the\u00a0highest place so far for this curious group who specialise in instrumentals with narration taken from archive footage. \u00a0This album is about\u00a0Welsh mining. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/FWvK7Uffmts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;They Gave Me A Lamp&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Something&#8217;s Changing&#8221; by Lucy Rose<\/strong> at 34. \u00a0Ouch. \u00a0Her last album, &#8220;Work It Out&#8221;, got to number 9. \u00a0She&#8217;s not on a major label any more, but this still seems a big hit. \u00a0Single: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fYgzkOtK_HE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;No Good At All&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If the recent rule changes were intended to speed up the chart,\u00a0then\u00a0it doesn&#8217;t seem to be working yet&#8230;
