27 June 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With England out of the World Cup, it&#8217;s a safe bet that the football singles will be clearing the chart in the not too distant future. \u00a0Actually, most of them were on their way out anyway. \u00a0But perhaps it&#8217;s fortunate that Dizzee Rascal and James Corden&#8217;s &#8220;Shout&#8221; single didn&#8217;t hang on for a third week. \u00a0It would have been announced only an hour or so after England lost. \u00a0That would have rubbed salt into the wound.<\/p>\n<p>As it happens, the single was never going to manage a third week. \u00a0It&#8217;s current at number three, behind the all-purpose World Cup single &#8220;Wavin&#8217; Flag&#8221; by K&#8217;Naan.<\/p>\n<p>He, on the other hand, has reason to feel aggrieved, because he was on course for a number one single until Virgin rush-released this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=12671339&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=12671339&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CwE-SLnLkqY\" target=\"_blank\">(YouTube version here.)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;California Gurls&#8221; by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg<\/strong> wasn&#8217;t due out just yet. \u00a0It&#8217;s another case of the record company panicking when a cheap cover version showed up on the iTunes chart, and rushing the official single out. \u00a0And once again, as it turns out, the single didn&#8217;t need the weeks of extra promotion to reach number 1.<\/p>\n<p>This is the lead single from Perry&#8217;s second album &#8220;Teenage Dream&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s her seventh UK hit and and her second number 1, following 2008&#8217;s less-than-subtle debut\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tAp9BKosZXs\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;I Kissed A Girl&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0To be honest, I always preferred the follow-up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X75mry1LcFg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Hot N Cold&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The lyrical theme this time is that the ladies of California are hot. \u00a0It&#8217;s decidedly Europop, and unashamedly lightweight. \u00a0But it&#8217;s quite catchy, and after all, nobody seriously pretends that Katy Perry is aiming for artistic immortality. \u00a0She&#8217;s claimed in interviews that it&#8217;s an answer song to &#8220;Empire State of Mind&#8221;, but let&#8217;s give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she&#8217;s joking.<\/p>\n<p>Implausible as it seems, the mis-spelled title is neither an error nor a random stab at coolness, but <a href=\"http:\/\/music-mix.ew.com\/2010\/05\/12\/katy-perry-california-gurls-big-star-reference\/\" target=\"_blank\">an intentional reference to &#8220;September Gurls&#8221; by Big Star<\/a>. \u00a0Supposedly her manager is a big fan, and persuaded her to change the spelling after the death of Big Star&#8217;s songwriter Alex Chilton in March. \u00a0Big Star sound nothing like Katy Perry. \u00a0They&#8217;re the sort of band that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PAMqJP4VvdE\" target=\"_blank\">Teenage Fanclub<\/a> used to cite as influence. \u00a0Here&#8217;s &#8220;September Gurls&#8221;, a single from 1974.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/BNKSs1J38EA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/BNKSs1J38EA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>The single also gives Snoop Dogg his first UK number 1 in a chart history that stretches back to &#8220;What&#8217;s My Name&#8221; in 1993. \u00a0This isn&#8217;t for want of trying &#8211; it&#8217;s his 26th chart credit, and six of those made the top 10. \u00a0Until now, his biggest hit was &#8220;Signs&#8221;, which reached number 2 in 2005. \u00a0If you&#8217;re struggling to place it, that&#8217;s probably because you mistook it for a Justin Timberlake single.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/-Pu9EYv1HBc&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/-Pu9EYv1HBc&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>He hasn&#8217;t actually made the charts, even as a guest star, since 2008&#8217;s vocoder-drenched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y1PVmANeyAg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Sensual Seduction&#8221;<\/a> (when, to be fair, the gimmick wasn&#8217;t quite so beaten into the ground), and even that only made number 24. \u00a0Like many rappers of his generation, his UK chart record is remarkably variable &#8211; a core audience who&#8217;ll send him to the lower reaches of the top 30, but enough exposure to cross over to a wider audience when he&#8217;s got a suitably commercial single. \u00a0And they don&#8217;t get much more commercial than &#8220;California Gurls&#8221;, evidently.<\/p>\n<p>Other records that made the top 40 over the last couple of weeks:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T9yGcKlYAiw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Kickstarts&#8221; by Example<\/a>, <\/strong>peaking\u00a0at number 3 &#8211; the third and biggest hit for the English rapper who&#8217;s repositioning himself as an electropop act.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=frv6FOt1BNI\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;All the Lovers&#8221; by Kylie Minogue<\/a><\/strong>, peaking at number 4. \u00a0This is the lead single from her new album. \u00a0It&#8217;s her 43rd hit, the first being the number 1 hit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5a7E6yyUNVo\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;I Should Be So Lucky&#8221;<\/a> way back in 1988, at which point she was a soap actress releasing cash-in singles, and most people wouldn&#8217;t have bet on her lasting the year. \u00a0It&#8217;s also her biggest hit since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0try34LV68g\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;2 Hearts&#8221;<\/a>, which reached number 4 in 2007. \u00a0Surprisingly mid-tempo for a lead single, but it&#8217;s a grower, and the video&#8217;s fantastic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"320\" height=\"180\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/swf\/video\/xdl1yh?width=320&amp;theme=none&amp;foreground=%23F7FFFD&amp;highlight=%23FFC300&amp;background=%23171D1B&amp;defaultSubtitle=0&amp;start=&amp;additionalInfos=0&amp;autoPlay=0&amp;hideInfos=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"320\" height=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/swf\/video\/xdl1yh?width=320&amp;theme=none&amp;foreground=%23F7FFFD&amp;highlight=%23FFC300&amp;background=%23171D1B&amp;defaultSubtitle=0&amp;start=&amp;additionalInfos=0&amp;autoPlay=0&amp;hideInfos=0\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v60xm093zBU\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Love The Way You Lie&#8221; by Eminem featuring Rihanna<\/a><\/strong> at number 7. \u00a0This is an album track from &#8220;Recovery&#8221;, which is due to be the second single in a few weeks time. \u00a0But it&#8217;s selling already, which might prompt a rethink about the schedule there. \u00a0Eminem&#8217;s 23rd hit, Rihanna&#8217;s 19th.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CcNo07Xp8aQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Dancing On My Own&#8221; by Robyn<\/a><\/strong>, peaking at number 8. \u00a0Decent but not spectacular mid-tempo electropop, which gives her a ninth hit. \u00a0Her biggest UK hit is of course the 2007 number 1 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3vfLvZCdT9g\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;With Every Heartbeat&#8221;<\/a>, but this is the joint runner up, equalling the number 8 peak of her 1998 single <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jx6w9ZgjuJI\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Show Me Love&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0Her UK chart record is interrupted by a nine-year stretch when she was only releasing records in her native Sweden. \u00a0In one of the stranger choices of single in history, she chose for her UK comeback this track, &#8220;Konichiwa Bitches&#8221;, which is cute, baffling, and sold absolutely sod all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object id=\"muzuplayer-robynsez8r9mbt7-1278176524587\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"bgcolor\" value=\"#000000\" \/><param name=\"quality\" value=\"high\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.muzu.tv\/player\/getPlayer\/a\/LFfDzZWD2p\/vidId=234962\" \/><param name=\"name\" value=\"muzuplayer-robynsez8r9mbt7-1278176524587\" \/><embed id=\"muzuplayer-robynsez8r9mbt7-1278176524587\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.muzu.tv\/player\/getPlayer\/a\/LFfDzZWD2p\/vidId=234962\" name=\"muzuplayer-robynsez8r9mbt7-1278176524587\" quality=\"high\" bgcolor=\"#000000\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" wmode=\"transparent\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3FV2ILnnTa0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Fire With Fire&#8221; by the Scissor Sisters<\/a><\/strong> at number 11. \u00a0The lead single from their new album, and their first hit since 2007 (giving them a total of 9). \u00a0Interesting choice of lead single &#8211; are they trying to reinvent themselves as a soft rock act?<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dwfKZ-1jyiw\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Commander&#8221; by Kelly Rowland featuring David Guetta<\/a><\/strong> at number 13. \u00a0Her tenth hit as a solo act, Guetta&#8217;s 8th, and their second in collaboration (the other being last year&#8217;s number 1 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zudbz4hOcbc\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;When Love Takes Over&#8221;<\/a>). \u00a0It&#8217;s one of those &#8220;you will all get on the dancefloor now and enjoy yourselves at gunpoint&#8221; dance records.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DkoeNLuMbcI\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Hello Good Morning&#8221; by Diddy &#8211; Dirty Money<\/a><\/strong> at number 22. \u00a0Dirty Money is Diddy&#8217;s new band, although he&#8217;s hedging his bets by giving himself a solo credit as well. \u00a0It&#8217;s his 26th UK hit, and as the lead single from this album, he might have expected it to do more.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oNHTCglQ_Wk\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Over the Rainbow&#8221;<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HPRaiVCkXjE\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Any Way You Want It\/Lovin&#8217; Touchin&#8217; Squealin'&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5ffuCVLECpY\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t Stop Believin'&#8221;<\/a> by the Glee Cast<\/strong>, peaking at 30, 32 and 33 respectively. \u00a0This is the second version of &#8220;Over the Rainbow&#8221; to chart inside a month, following the Danielle Hope version. \u00a0&#8220;Don&#8217;t Stop Believin'&#8221; is back because they did it again in a later episode, and &#8220;Any Way&#8230;&#8221; is a couple of other Journey songs, both unfamiliar to UK audiences (where Journey never made any impact). \u00a0This brings their total to 17 hits (not counting the re-entry of &#8220;Don&#8217;t Stop&#8230;&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bdQioZHYpvQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Tenderoni&#8221; by Kele<\/a><\/strong>, peaking at 31. \u00a0The debut solo single from the lead singer of Bloc Party. \u00a0The production reminds me of something Bodyrox might do, but with better lyrics and a weaker chorus. \u00a0Bloc Party had a total of 13 hits, the biggest being &#8220;The Prayer&#8221; (no 4 in 2007), which is great.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/T8oRFcA0mFM&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/T8oRFcA0mFM&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rWsvkW6rKkQ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Shutterbugg&#8221; by Big Boi<\/a><\/strong>, at number 31. \u00a0He&#8217;s the one from Outkast who isn&#8217;t Andre 3000. \u00a0Officially it&#8217;s his first single as a solo act, though some of the Outkast singles are basically solo tracks. \u00a0He&#8217;s cropped up as a featured artist twice before, though, on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2mN7ziIhrmo\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;ADIDAS&#8221;
