back in 2010. Not many people can have new entries at number one these days, but Drake is one of the rare few. It probably does help a bit that “God’s Plan” isn’t on YouTube, which doesn’t count towards the chart, thus pushing people towards the streaming services, which do.

It’s from the “Scary Hours” EP which he released without prior warning last Friday, and which seems to be commonly described as his first new material in a year (so apparently we’re not counting his Louis Vuitton tie-in “Signs”, which got to number 14 last June). “Scary Hours” only has two tracks on it, so it’s a bit of a stretch to call it an “EP”, but I guess if you’re bundling tracks in the digital era you’ve got to call it something.

This week’s other new entries…

21. Drake – “Diplomatic Immunity”

The other track from “Scary Hours”, and I’m surprised it’s quite this far behind. It’s somewhat less commercial, but it’s a still a new Drake track (and I prefer it, but what do I know?). Perhaps Drake has inadvertently re-invented the B-side.

32. Mabel featuring Not3s – “Fine Line”

The follow-up to “Finders Keepers”, which reached the top ten last year and only just left the top 40. This is growing on me, though I could live without the Not3s verse, which plods all over the track’s liquid shimmering. Mabel also guests on the single version of Not3s’ current single “My Lover”, which is still around at 17 – though she doesn’t get a chart listing because the record company hasn’t nominated that mix as the lead version.

33. Rudimental featuring Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen – “These Days”

Gospel-ish simple-pleasures track which is on the understated side by Rudimental’s standards, in as much as it resists the temptation to go for the usual celebratory stadium climax and sticks to where the song wants to go. The video makes a decent stab of trying to sell us on Jess Glynne and Macklemore as a couple, though you can practically sense the director cursing that there are three voices on this track and he’s got to shoehorn Dan Caplen in somewhere. Caplen’s been signed for a couple of years now, but this is his first chart appearance.

40. The Chainsmokers – “Sick Boy”

Well, that’s not what I expected from a new Chainsmokers single. They’ve gone a bit emo. This is… not bad, actually. I hope it climbs, because it does deserve better than to wind up as the change-of-direction single that gets stuck at 40.

This week’s climbers:

“IDGAF”
