{"id":4040,"date":"2018-02-18T20:15:25","date_gmt":"2018-02-18T20:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=4040"},"modified":"2018-02-18T20:15:25","modified_gmt":"2018-02-18T20:15:25","slug":"charts-16-february-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=4040","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 16 February 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, this isn&#8217;t shifting&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Drake &#8211; &#8220;God&#8217;s Plan&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xpVfcZ0ZcFM\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Four weeks, and hey, Drake&#8217;s made a video! \u00a0It&#8217;s basically him giving away loads of money to people in Florida. \u00a0The video kind of frames it as spending the label&#8217;s money, but to be honest, the publicity is probably a better return on their money than a high-budget video. \u00a0And it&#8217;s not like the video they made looks especially shoestring &#8211; it comes across as optimistic rather than just sentimental.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->For me, the video helps the song a lot &#8211; as I may have mentioned, I found the actual record drearily one-note. \u00a0But then I don&#8217;t really get Drake, so I&#8217;m probably not the person to ask.<\/p>\n<p>On with this week&#8217;s new entries&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>19. \u00a0Marshmello &amp; Anne-Marie &#8211; &#8220;Friends&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jzD_yyEcp0M\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Marshmello seems to be establishing himself as a regular chart presence &#8211; this is his third hit since September, and all pretence of being a dancefloor act seems to have vanished. \u00a0You almost have to admire his kayfabe-type commitment to pretending that his identity is still some sort of a mystery, when it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marshmello\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hardly difficult to find out<\/a>. \u00a0Then again, making a big deal of hiding your well-documented face worked well for Sia.<\/p>\n<p>Anne-Marie was the guest singer on Clean Bandit&#8217;s &#8220;Rockabye&#8221;, which spent nine weeks at number one at the start of last year; she&#8217;s had a couple of hits in her own right too, but hasn&#8217;t really followed up in quite the way you&#8217;d hope. \u00a0The gimmick here is to release a &#8220;friend zone&#8221; song for Valentine&#8217;s Day. \u00a0It&#8217;s entirely fine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23. \u00a0Blocboy JB featuring Drake &#8211; &#8220;Look Alive&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NV-3s2wwC8c\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Blocboy JB is a rapper from Memphis, and this is his chart debut. \u00a0But this is basically a Drake single &#8211; he does two verses, and Blocboy shows up for forty seconds in the middle. \u00a0So his lead artist credit is, um, generous. \u00a0Mind you, if you want a relatively commercial single of Drake actually rapping, here you go &#8211; I could see this hanging around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>37. \u00a0Bazzi &#8211; &#8220;Mine&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gc71AmT_b2k\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another chart debut. \u00a0Andrew Bazzi is from Detroit, and this has been out for a while, but apparently it&#8217;s had a bit of viral support on Snapchat of late. \u00a0At just over two minutes, it&#8217;s certainly concise, but it&#8217;s also quite decent; this deserves to go further.<\/p>\n<p><b>40. \u00a0James Bay &#8211; &#8220;Wild Love&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UJw_-nHiGp8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>James Bay hasn&#8217;t been in the chart since &#8220;Hold Back The River&#8221; reached number 2 in 2015. \u00a0The lead single from his new album is a muffled slow burner but worth the time. \u00a0I&#8217;m not sure I see it going much further in 2018, but it&#8217;d be nice to be wrong.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;This Is Me&#8221; by Keala Settle &amp; The\u00a0<em>Greatest Showman<\/em> Ensemble<\/strong> climbs 6-3.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Feel It Still&#8221; by Portugal. The Man<\/strong> climbs 9-6, having definitively crossed over to an audience that didn&#8217;t notice it during its previous six months on release.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;For You (Fifty Shades Freed)&#8221; by Liam Payne &amp; Rita Ora<\/strong> rebounds 18-8 to enter the top 10 for the first time, tying in with release of the film. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RQUuqbzQVsY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It&#8217;s acquired a video<\/a> since I last mentioned it, but Liam&#8217;s vocals remain thoroughly overshadowed. \u00a0The Official Charts Company is claiming that, as a result of this track entering the top 10, Rita Ora has equalled the record for most top ten hits by a British solo female artist &#8211; twelve, held jointly by Shirley Bassey and Petula Clark. \u00a0This is sort of true, but half of her top ten hits are as a guest on other people&#8217;s records.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;All The Stars&#8221; by Kendrick Lamar &amp; SZA<\/strong> climbs 28-11 and\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Pray For Me&#8221; by The Weeknd &amp; Kendrick Lamar<\/strong> moves 15-13, as\u00a0<em>Black Panther<\/em>&#8216;s soundtrack album comes out this week. \u00a0(It isn&#8217;t on the album chart because it&#8217;s been classed as a compilation album.) \u00a0Lamar&#8217;s title track his just outside the top 40.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Jumanji&#8221; by B Young<\/strong> moves 27-25.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Let Me Go&#8221; by Hailee Steinfeld &amp; Alesso featuring Florida Georgia Line &amp; Watt<\/strong> moves 39-30.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Check&#8221; by Kojo Funds featuring Raye<\/strong> edges 33-32.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sick Boy&#8221; by the Chainsmokers<\/strong> moves 40-36, having spent four weeks now hovering around the very bottom of the top 40.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the album chart, the\u00a0<strong><em>Greatest Showman\u00a0<\/em>OST<\/strong> gets a sixth week at number 1. \u00a0And for this week&#8217;s new entries&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0The Wombats &#8211; &#8220;Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nNh51G84WZY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the album chart, where a new release by the Wombats is a big deal. \u00a0It&#8217;s been a decade now since they were having regular hit singles; the biggest was &#8220;Moving To New York&#8221;, which reached 13. \u00a0But their subsequent albums have consistently placed in the top 5. \u00a0The single above is&#8230; alright.<\/p>\n<p>Number 3 is <strong>&#8220;Diamond in the Dirt&#8221; by Mist<\/strong>; I covered the single &#8220;Game Changer&#8221; a couple of weeks back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u00a0Fredo &#8211; &#8220;Tables Turn&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2brKUEhD-ek\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s a London rapper and this is his second album (or mixtape, if you prefer). \u00a0The first one only got to number 77, and that was less than a year ago, so he&#8217;s clearly had a good twelve months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Franz Ferdinand &#8211; &#8220;Always Ascending&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/crjugtkXZN4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>More indie veterans who long since transitioned into the career afterlife of the album chart &#8211; they&#8217;ve never had an album chart lower than 6. \u00a0The title track above starts off sounding like the Divine Comedy before going disco. \u00a0As ever with these guys, your mileage will vary, depending how mannered you find it all. \u00a0(And whether you think &#8220;mannered&#8221; is a good or a bad thing&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><strong>15. \u00a0Brian Fallon &#8211; &#8220;Sleepwalkers&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1jf4qiIs2AU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Brian Fallon is the lead singer of the Gaslight Anthem, and this is his second solo album; the first one got to number 13, so not much difference. \u00a0(The band themselves tend to place their albums in the top 5.) \u00a0The single above is very retro pop-rock, though pleasant enough on that level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>27. \u00a0MGMT &#8211; &#8220;Little Dark Age&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rtL5oMyBHPs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>MGMT&#8217;s first album in five years, and the last one missed the top 40. \u00a0Considering that their preceding albums both made the top 10, that was clearly disappointing. \u00a0MGMT are long past whatever the indie equivalent of an imperial phase is, but the title track has an excellent synthpop chorus to offer and deserved more notice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, this isn&#8217;t shifting&#8230;
